1/7. Malignant melanoma in a patient with oculocutaneous albinism.

BACKGROUND: Sun-induced malignancies (basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas) are common in oculocutaneous albinism, however, the incidence of malignant melanoma is a topic of controversy. OBJECTIVE: We have reviewed the literature and report a case of a woman with oculocutaneous albinism with an amelanotic melanoma of the anterior chest wall. RESULTS: There are only 26 previously reported cases (both case reports and African albino population studies) in 25 patients in the literature. A 27th case with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural evaluation is presented. CONCLUSIONS: It appears that melanoma, a malignancy for which sun exposure and light colouration are felt to be major risk factors, has a low incidence among a population that is both hypopigmented and often exposed to high levels of ultraviolet light. This low incidence is poorly understood and frequently disputed.

2/7. Primary malignant melanoma of the lung in oculocutaneous albino patient.

Oculocutaneous albinism is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by general depigmentation, nystagmus, photophobia, and decreased visual acuity. Malignant melanoma is extremely rare in patients with albinism. We present a 41-year-old albino male patient, who was admitted with a suspected bronchogenic carcinoma. He underwent a pulmonary resection and the diagnosis was primary malign melanoma of the lung. The patient died of tumor recurrence in the postoperative 46th month.

3/7. Malignant melanoma in a child with oculocutaneous albinism.

Malignant melanoma is extremely rare in patients with albinism. To date, in the English language literature, there have been only sixteen documented cases of malignant melanoma in albino patients. These cases include thirteen cutaneous, one oral, one ocular, and one anal; only one of these was in a child. Here, we present the case of the youngest known albino patient to have cutaneous malignant melanoma.

4/7. Primary malignant melanoma of the colon in an oculocutaneous albino.

We describe the case of an elderly albino man who presented with the typical features of a caecal malignancy and underwent a right hemi-colectomy. Histological assessment subsequently revealed the tumour to be a primary malignant melanoma of the colon. This unexpected diagnosis raises interesting questions regarding the embryology and aetiology of this rare tumour and the anticipated prognosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a primary colonic melanoma associated with oculocutaneous albinism.

5/7. Choroidal amelanotic melanoma in a patient with oculocutaneous albinism.

CASE REPORT: We describe the clinical presentation of a choroidal amelanotic melanoma in a 46-year-old woman with oculocutaneous albinism. Clinical aspects, investigations, and management are presented, and findings from computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are described. Microscopic findings and histopathological features, demonstrating a spindle B-cell melanoma of the choroid, are also reviewed. COMMENTS: magnetic resonance imaging may be helpful in diagnosing amelanotic melanoma in patients with oculocutaneous albinism.

6/7. Amelanotic metastatic melanoma in a patient with oculocutaneous albinism.

Melanomas are rare in patients who have albinism, compared with the frequent occurrence of squamous cell carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas. This report describes amelanotic metastatic melanoma in a 58-year-old Japanese man who had tyrosinase-positive oculocutaneous albinism. A prolonged bleeding time, facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, and Gilbert syndrome were also present. Superficial spreading melanoma with evidence of spontaneous regression on his right forearm was suspected as a possible primary site. Twenty-two cases of melanomas in persons who have albinism have been reported.

7/7. Choroidal melanoma in an African-American albino.

PURPOSE: To report the rare occurrence of choroidal melanoma in an African-American albino. methods: A 68-year-old African-American man with oculocutaneous albinism developed an amelanotic choroidal mass in his left eye. A transvitreal fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed to confirm the diagnosis, and the patient was treated with iodine 125 plaque radiotherapy. RESULTS: The cytology of the needle biopsy showed spindle cells with nuclear atypia and prominent nucleoli. The cells showed positive immunoreactivity for HMB-45, supporting the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a choroidal melanoma occurring in an African-American albino.
