1/6. Ossification of the posterior longitudinal spinal ligament in association with anterior longitudinal ligament ankylosing hyperostosis: case report.

A case of ossification of the posterior spinal longitudinal ligament in association with anterior ankylosing hyperostosis is presented, with a review of the relevant literature. Improvement followed laminectomy. Evaluation of this entity by computerized tomography is demonstrated.

2/6. ankylosis due to heterotopic ossification following primary total knee arthroplasty.

We present a case of ankylosis of the knee after knee arthroplasty due to heterotopic ossification in the ligaments. Treatment with resection of the collateral ligaments, reconstruction with a hinged implant and radiotherapy was successful.

3/6. quadriplegia associated with narrow cervical canal, ligamentous calcification and ankylosing hyperostosis.

The occurrence of three pathological entities of the cervical spine--ankylosing hyperostosis, calcification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, congenitally narrowed cervical canal--in a single patient is reported. This combination of pathology led to a severely narrowed cervical canal and a spine with abnormal mobility at non-fused levels. Minor trauma to the patient resulted in permanent quadriplegia.

4/6. Early hypercementosis and arrested dental eruption: heritable multiple ankylodontia.

This study describes arrested posterior permanent tooth eruption in association with hypercementosis, reduction of the periodontal ligamental space, and bony ankylosis. The severe dental malocclusion occurred in four members of the same family and it appears to have an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance.

5/6. replantation of avulsed permanent teeth with avital periodontal ligaments: case report.

Five maxillary anterior teeth lost during a grand mal epileptic seizure, were replanted using the technique recently described by Andreasen (1), after an extra-alveolar period of more than 72 h. The teeth were replanted surgically, 10 days after being avulsed, after they had been immersed in a 2.4% sodium fluoride solution and root filled with gutta-percha. ankylosis was evident 3 months post-operatively. After 24 months there was evidence of considerable replacement resorption on the lateral incisors with little evidence of resorption on the other replanted teeth. Even though the long term prognosis is uncertain, this technique has an advantage of seeing the patient through the period of growth as well as maintaining the height of alveolar bone making possible the provision of an aesthetically acceptable prosthesis at a later age.

6/6. Total knee replacement with minimally constrained prostheses in spontaneous bony ankylosis.

Total knee replacement has been carried out in the 4 knees of 2 patients for spontaneous bony ankylosis. Minimally constrained prostheses were used because the ligaments were usually intact and the patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joint lines could be re-established. The approach and repair was by a V-Y quadricepsplasty. Satisfactory results were obtained.
