1/5. Extra-articular synovial chondromatosis. Description of a rare localization in the arm.

The author presents a rare instance of extra-articular chondromatosis located around the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii. The tendon subsequently tore and retracted, resulting in the formation of numerous cartilaginous loose bodies which collected in a mid-brachial cavity communicating with the canal which had previously housed the tendon. The author comments on the peculiar mechanism of production of this rare case of synovial chondromatosis as well as possible interpretations.

2/5. Synovial chondromatosis of the hip joint.

Synovial chondromatosis of the hip joint is uncommon entity. Two cases are presented, and the spectrum of the disease is discussed. Partial synovectomy with loose body removal is recommended as the treatment of choice. Joint replacement is performed only in patients with severe secondary osteoarthritis, and used only in selected cases.

3/5. Bone scintigraphic demonstration of synovial chondromatosis.

Markedly increased periarticular Tc-99m diphosphonate uptake around the knee is described in a patient found to have synovial chondromatosis. The pathophysiology and possible causes of bone tracer uptake in this cartilaginous disorder are discussed.

4/5. Synovial osteochondromatosis in association with legg-calve-perthes disease.

A male patient who had had legg-calve-perthes disease at age 8 years developed synovial osteochondromatosis of the same hip joint 27 years later at age 35. Roentgenographic examination 10 years prior to arthrotomy showed that he had developed 4 loose bodies in the hip and partial disintigration of the fmoral head. The surgical specimens obtained by arthrotomy consisted of 148 loose bodies and suggested that a condition of secondary synovial osteochondromatosis might be differentiated from primary synovial osteochondromatosis.

5/5. Ultrastructure of synovial chondromatosis.

Electron microscopic examination in a case of synovial chondromatosis associated with moderate cytological atypia showed chondrocytes with abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, prominent Golgi complexes, and peripheral aggregates of glycogen. These findings emphasize the similarity in ultrastructural appearance of chondromatosis, mature hyaline cartilage, and benign cartilaginous tumors and thus support the generally benign nature of synovial chondromatosis.
