1/16. A case of chondroma of the tongue.

Chondroma of the tongue represents a very rare benign tumor at this site, with very few reports of pure chondroma (no components of adipose, fibrous or bony tissue) existing. This report presents the case of a 17-year-old man with chondroma arising at the center of the tongue.

2/16. Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor of the hard palate--a case report.

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECMT) is a rare tumor. Only 26 cases of ECMT have been reported, all occurred in the anterior tongue. We present a case of a 30-year-old male with a nodule in the hard palate, which was reported as ECMT on histopathology. The differential diagnosis considered included are extraskeletal myxoid chondroma, ECMT, pleomorphic adenoma, oral focal mucinosis, chondroid choristoma, and ossifying fibromyxoid tumor. After serial sections no other component was observed and a diagnosis of ECMT was made by exclusion. The patient is asymptomatic on follow up. A review of existing literature is also presented here.

3/16. Chondrolipoma of the popliteal fossa and Japanese reports.

A rare case of chondrolipoma of the right popliteal fossa in a 24-year-old female was reported with review of the Japanese published work. Eleven patients with chondrolipoma including lipoma with cartilaginous metaplasia, including my case, have been reported in japan. The patients ranged in age from 7-79 years. All cases occurred in adults except for one. Six patients were male and five were female. Two lesions each arose on the tongue, upper back and popliteal fossa, and one each on the buccal submucosa, shoulder, breast, lateral chest and sole. The duration of the lesions ranged from 1 month to 20 years. The lesions ranged 1-10 cm in greatest dimension. The presented tumor was an early one because of the shortest duration and the smallest size in japan. Recent criteria for a benign mesenchymoma including a chondrolipoma were also described.

4/16. Chondroma of the tongue. Report of a case and a consideration of the histogenesis of such lesions.

Chondroma of the tongue is a very rare condition. We describe a case that demonstrates unusual features in terms of its location in the tongue and the presence of noncartilaginous elements. Of the various hypotheses concerning the pathogenesis of lingual chondromas, it seems most likely that they are truly neoplasms (or hamartomas) of mesenchymal tissue that manifest metaplastic features.

5/16. Case report of chondroma of the tongue.

A 20-year-old Japanese woman was referred to the hospital for examination and treatment of an asymptomatic swelling of the left dorsum of the tongue. Intraoral examination revealed that the tumor was covered with normal mucosa and oval, firm on palpation and measured 1.5 cm in diameter. The lesion was movable suggesting benignity in nature. No cervical lymph node was palpated. The cut surface of the extirpated tumor after fixation showed a chalky white "core region" surrounded with a yellowish white adipose tissue. Histopathological examination revealed the lesion to be a benign cartilaginous tumor. We report this case of chondroma which arose from the tongue because of its rarity, and reviewed related literature.

6/16. Chondroma of the tongue.

Lingual chondromas are rare neoplasms. They are usually seen on the lateral border and dorsum of the tongue. A case of chondroma on the ventral surface of the tongue of a 79-year-old woman is described and the literature reviewed. The possible causes of this unusual neoplasm are discussed.

7/16. Chondroma of the tongue.

A case of lingual chondroma is presented, along with the pertinent light and electron microscopy findings. The literature on lingual chondromas has been reviewed, and the pertinent clinical features are discussed and compared with those of other hard lingual tumors, the osteoma and osteochondroma.

8/16. Chondroma and osteochondroma of the tongue.

The first case of two separate tumors of the tongue, one cartilaginous and the other osteocartilaginous, is reported. The cartilaginous matrix of these two tumors contained elastic fibers and type II collagen. The histogenesis of these tumors is discussed.

9/16. osteoma or chondroma of the tongue; a clinical and postmortem study.

The occurrence of an osteoma or chondroma in the soft tissues of the oral cavity is rather uncommon. This anomaly occurs mainly on the tongue. Less than 60 cases have been published in the literature. In the first part of this treatise, 2 other patients are described, a 61-year-old female with a chondroma on the dorsum of the tongue and a 31-year-old female with an osteoma in the foramen caecum area. In the second part, the result of a post mortem study of 130 adult human tongues is reported. Not a single case of bone or cartilage formation was encountered in the cadaver tongues. The possible development of an osteoma or chondroma in embryonic life is discussed.
