1/725. A de novo discharging sinus of the fronto-orbital suture: a rare presentation of a dermoid cyst. Dermoid cysts are developmental anomalies, resulting primarily from trapped germinal epithelium. In the neck and head region, the most common location is the fronto-orbital upper outer quadrant of the orbit. Because only a few cases of dermoid cysts with discharging sinus of the fronto-orbital area have been reported in the literature, the authors present an unusual case of a frontozygomatic suture dermoid cyst, presenting as a sinus, in an 56-year-old man. The histologic report confirmed that the cystic lesion was a dermoid cyst with a tract. diagnosis and management are discussed. ( info) |
| A rare case of malignant struma ovarii is presented. The tumor was excised together with the ovary and interpreted as a papillary strumal adenocarcinoma arising in a cystic teratoma with predominant thyroid elements. Prior to surgery the patient did not show any symptoms of thyroid hyperfunction. The thyroid function tests performed subsequent to surgery were within normal limits. Periodic examinations of the patient over a period of three years did not reveal any abnormalities. Statistically, this type of malignancy carries a good prognosis with a high "cure" rate. ( info) |

A patient is described who suffered a greatly delayed reappearance of a cerebellar abscess, 20 years after excision, in childhood, of a midline dermoid cyst with associated abscess formation. 4/725. dermoid cyst with dermal sinus tract complicated with spinal subdural abscess. Spinal subdural abscess caused by spread of infection with the dermal sinus tract is rare in children. This article reports on a 1-year-old male with prolonged fever, progressive paraplegia, and bowel and bladder dysfunction resulting from a spinal subdural abscess secondary to an infected spinal dermoid cyst with a dermal sinus tract. This is the youngest patient to be reported having this condition. Surgical intervention was performed to find a tumor that had capsule and keratinlike contents. culture of the abscess was positive for escherichia coli and bacteroides vulgatus. He received 6 weeks of parenteral antibiotic treatment. This patient illustrates the importance of urgent radiologic examination, immediate surgical resection, and appropriate antibiotic therapy for spinal subdural abscess. ( info) |
5/725. Virilizing ovarian dermoid cyst with peripheral steroid cells. A case study with immunohistochemical study of steroidogenesis. A case of virilizing ovarian dermoid cyst with peripheral steroid cells and virilization is reported in a 62-year-old woman. The level of testosterone dropped to normal after oophorectomy. The cyst wall was bordered by a discontinuous band of steroid cells focally accompanied by smooth muscle cells. Immunohistochemically, the steroid cells were enzymatically active and displayed a profile similar to the internal theca cells of ovarian follicles. These steroid cells were most probably modified stromal cells associated with smooth muscle metaplasia of the ovarian stroma. ( info) |
6/725. Coexisting congenital sublingual dermoid and bronchogenic cyst. A congenital dermoid together with a bronchogenic cyst at the base of the tongue is extremely rare. We describe a 5-year-old boy who presented with an enlarged anterior segment of mandible, slight swelling of the left submandibular region, and a large swelling of the floor of the mouth that was displacing the tongue posteriorly. Both cysts were successfully excised and the boy made an uncomplicated recovery. Occlusion and mastication returned to normal and his speech improved remarkably. ( info) |
7/725. Fine-needle aspiration cytological features of dermoid cyst of the parotid gland: a report of two cases. We describe the cytological features of dermoid cyst of the parotid gland the value of preoperative diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytological evaluation. Both patients had painless parotid masses. On physical examination, a freely movable parotid mass was found in each case. CT scan showed a cystic mass in the parotid gland in each patient. FNA in both cases showed anucleated and nucleated squamous epithelium and keratin debris. The clinical features and cytological findings in each case were interpreted as suggestive of a dermoid cyst. Histological examination of surgical specimens confirmed the presence of a dermoid cyst of the parotid gland in each case. FNA is a reliable method for preoperative diagnosis and permits selection of an appropriate form of surgical procedure for dermoid cyst of the parotid gland. ( info) |
| We report a case of dermoid cyst of the eustachian tube in a 2 1/2 -year-old-girl with CT and MRI imaging. This is the 12th described case of such a pathology. 9/725. Pilonidal cyst on the vault. Case report. Pilonidal cysts and sinuses are described as dermoid cysts which contain follicles of hairs and sebaceous glands. They clinically present as a classic case of inflammation which comes with pain, local infection and redness. The origin of pilonidal disease remains controverse. There are many hypothesis as lack of hygiene on the affected area and a penetration and growth of a hair in the subcutaneous tissue caused by constant friction or direct trauma on the damaged area. The option for clinical treatment is very frequent. However, taking into consideration the incidence and the possibility of recidive, surgical treatment is presently recommended. Complications include cellulitis and abscess formation. Pilonidal cysts are mostly found on the sacral region. In the literature is found description of pilonidal cysts on the penis, interdigital region on the hands as well as on the cervical region. We present a case of pilonidal cyst located on the vault biparietal region, without malignant degeneration. ( info) |
10/725. Presence of bilateral limbal dermoids and choroidal osteomas in a family with inherited limbal dermoids. We report a case of bilateral limbal dermoids and bilateral choroidal osteomas in a 14-year-old girl with no extraocular anomalies. Histopathological examination of a limbal lesion confirmed the clinical diagnosis of dermoid. Computerized tomography and ultrasonography were compatible with a diagnosis of choroidal osteoma. Limbal dermoids were present in the patient's mother, in a brother with down syndrome, and in an aunt with no choroidal osteoma. The present pedigree is compatible with autosomal dominant inheritance of bilateral limbal dermoids. The same gene may be involved in the pathogenesis of ocular choristomas in same patients. ( info) |
