1/4. Multiple pigmented follicular cysts of the vulva successfully treated with CO2 laser: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: A pigmented follicular cyst is an uncommon epithelial cyst, typically occurring as a single asymptomatic pigmented papule or nodule on the head and neck of adult men. To the authors' knowledge, no previous cases of vulvar pigmented follicular cyst have been reported. Although benign, pigmented follicular cyst can affect quality of life when multiple and symptomatic. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe the clinicopathologic features of vulvar pigmented follicular cyst and to evaluate the efficacy of CO(2) laser therapy in this region. methods: A 62-year-old woman with multiple pigmented follicular cysts affecting the labia majora bilaterally is described. Owing to frequent inflammation and tenderness, continuous-wave CO(2) laser was used to treat the skin lesions under local anesthesia. RESULTS: All cystic nodules were successfully ablated with CO(2) laser. The patient tolerated the procedure well and had a satisfactory cosmetic outcome. CONCLUSION: CO(2) laser is a tolerable and effective therapeutic modality for multiple and symptomatic pigmented follicular cysts of the vulva.

2/4. Pigmented follicular cyst.

This report describes the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of a pigmented follicular cyst. Clinically, it was a blue intracutaneous nodule that simulated a blue nevus. Nevertheless, the histopathologic examination showed in the mid dermis an epithelial cyst whose wall comprised a layer of stratified squamous epithelium with infundibular keratinization and whose lumen contained laminated keratin and many pigmented terminal hair shafts. The differential diagnosis with other epithelial cysts containing hair shafts in their cavities, mainly the eryptive vellus hair cyst, is discussed.

3/4. Pigmented follicular cyst.

A pigmented follicular cyst is an infrequent variant of an epithelial cyst which has rarely been reported since it was first described about 10 years ago. The condition consists of a single pigmented lesion which occurs predominantly in adult men, and is usually located on the head and neck region. We report an example of a pigmented follicular cyst, which was located in the axilla.

4/4. Multiple pigmented follicular cysts: a subtype of multiple pilosebaceous cysts.

Pigmented follicular cyst is a rare disorder which typically presents as a pigmented papule on the head or neck and which, histologically, exhibits terminally differentiated, pigmented hair shafts in an epidermoid cyst. We report a 22-year-old man with the multiple variant of this disorder. Clinically he had numerous brown-blue to flesh-coloured, domed-shaped papules, on the anterior chest and abdomen, of 10 years duration. Histologically, hybrid cysts exhibiting trichilemmal and epidermoid keratinization were seen. The cysts contained numerous pigmented, terminally differentiated hair shafts and, embedded in the wall of one cyst, was a sebaceous gland. The condition of multiple pigmented follicular cysts, is thought to represent a distinct subtype within the spectrum of multiple pilosebaceous cystic disorders.
