1/5. Mandibular and maxillary furcation tunnel preparations--literature review and a case report.

AIM: The objective of this literature review and subsequent case report is to discuss and illustrate the tunnel preparation procedure as a treatment alternative for furcation-involved molars. review OF THE literature: Furcation tunnel preparation, i.e., the creation of access for plaque control between periodontally diseased roots, has not been discussed in the literature as comprehensively as root resective therapy, though success rates appear to fall within the same range. A short root trunk and a wide furcation entrance diameter are prerequisites for the indication of the tunnel preparation procedure. Although accessory canals in the furcation area are frequent findings on extracted teeth, endodontic complications have not been reported to be major complications after tunnel preparation. Caries developed at tunneled teeth even under proper maintenance, but did not necessarily lead to the loss of an affected tooth. CASE REPORT: In the case presented to illustrate the indication for the tunnel preparation procedure, periodontal disease was almost entirely restricted to the furcation sites of molar teeth. Affected teeth were either extracted or left intact and subjected to tunneling procedures. Periodontal health could be established and maintained at both single and double tunnels over a period of 2 years of periodontal supportive therapy.

2/5. Comprehensive treatment concept in a young adult patient with severe periodontal disease: a case report.

This case report describes the comprehensive treatment of generalized, advanced periodontal disease in a young patient. In view of the necessary reconstruction, the extensive destruction of the periodontal tissues required a systematic approach to determine the possibilities and the expectations of the patient. The subsequent oral rehabilitation was accomplished with fixed prosthodontics. In the mandible, strategically important anchor teeth were replaced with implants, allowing smaller units to be inserted. The long-term treatment result, however, can only be ensured with the full cooperation of the patient and consistent periodontal maintenance care.

3/5. Augmentation of an anterior edentulous ridge for fixed prosthodontics with combined use of orthodontics and surgery: a clinical report.

Untreated periodontitis may lead to tooth and tissue loss that can result in diminished masticatory function and esthetic deformities. Combined periodontal/prosthodontic treatment for patients with advanced periodontal disease has been well documented, and treatment results can often be improved with the use of adjunctive orthodontic treatment such as forced eruption. This clinical report describes a method of preprosthetic preparation of an edentulous ridge for a fixed partial denture that incorporates the combined use of orthodontics and surgical ridge augmentation.

4/5. The healing potential of periodontal-endodontic lesions.

Osseous lesions involving the periodontium, and which are sometimes associated with discomfort and pathologic changes such as swelling or the development of a sinus tract, are not always due to periodontal disease. Thus, it is not uncommon to find a dentition with generally good periodontal health but with one tooth having a severe isolated bony periodontal defect. In other cases, periodontal treatment may result in a general improvement, except in relation to one tooth which does not respond to the therapy. Very often these cases are instances of combined periodontal-endodontic lesions, but which are solely of pulpal origin. This paper serves to help the dental practitioner recognise the disease process underlying the condition and appreciate its effective management with non-surgical root canal treatment.

5/5. The regenerative potential of ePTFE membranes and freeze-dried bone allografts--two case reports.

The purpose of this article is to reexamine the indications of surgical techniques and materials used in the regenerative treatment of periodontal disease. Two cases are presented to illustrate the potential for regenerative therapy in instances where limited success might have been anticipated.
