Collagenous gastritis associated with lymphocytic gastritis and celiac disease.Collagenous gastritis is a rare disorder, with only 8 cases reported in the literature, 2 in children and 6 in adults. We report an additional case of collagenous gastritis in a 42-year-old man with celiac disease. A thickened (>10 microm) subepithelial collagen band with entrapped capillaries, fibroblasts, and inflammatory cells was seen in the stomach, associated with lymphocytic gastritis. The duodenal mucosa showed severe villous atrophy but no subepithelial collagen deposition. No evidence of lymphocytic or collagenous colitis was found in the colon. The patient became symptom-free on a gluten exclusion diet and showed partial improvement of histopathologic findings after 3 months. Collagenous gastritis is a rare disease, but a wider recognition of its histopathologic features and clinical associations may bring more cases to light and provide additional clues in determining its etiology and pathogenesis.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = rare disease (Clic here for more details about this article) |
2/3. Phlegmonous gastritis in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.Phlegmonous gastritis is an acute infection of the stomach wall by pyogenic bacteria. It represents an extremely rare disease with a fulminating course and a high mortality rate. A precise lifetime diagnosis is generally unsuccessful. The inflammation, most often caused by alpha-hemolytic streptococci, is most frequently expressed in patients who are more susceptible to infection. Among these are elderly patients, women, patients with chronic gastritis, chronic peptic ulcer, hepatic cirrhosis and decreased immune tolerance, T-cell leukemia, patients with a low socio-economic status and alcoholics. In our paper we are describing the case of a 66-year old female patient, who had received many years of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. She died due to phlegmonous gastritis, which was only established post-mortem. The authors share the opinion that the occurrence of the phlegmonous form of gastritis was influenced significantly by the treatment with nonsteroidal antirheumatics and corticosteroids, which she had received for many years and also immediately prior to the complication.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = rare disease (Clic here for more details about this article) |
3/3. Primary tuberculous granulomatous esophagogastro-duodenitis: a report of a case.Primary upper gastro-intestinal tuberculosis is a very rare disease. We report the case of a 25-year-old man who presented with a febrile illness and non-specific gastro-intestinal symptoms. The upper gastro-intestinal x-rays showed a normal esophagus and non-specific changes of the stomach and duodenum. endoscopy revealed diffuse esophagogastro-duodenitis of tuberculous origin.
