1/32. granulomatous mastitis.

granulomatous mastitis is a benign mammary lesion, which clinically can closely simulate breast cancer. The condition has only recently been recognized, less than a dozen cases being recorded in the English literature. Two further cases are presented, the histological features are illustrated, and the literature is reviewed.

2/32. granulomatous mastitis in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: granulomatous mastitis, a rare, benign breast condition characterized by granulomas and abscess formation, is mistaken frequently for inflammatory breast carcinoma. Although it has been reported in reproductive-age women, it is unusual in pregnancy. CASE: A 25-year-old black gravida 4 para 2 developed a tender, indurated 20 x 15 x 15 cm multilobulated breast mass at 17 weeks' gestation. After not responding to antibiotics and incisional drainage, the biopsy-proved granulomatous mastitis improved with corticosteroid treatment. A postpartum recurrence also responded to steroid therapy. CONCLUSION: granulomatous mastitis is diagnosed clinically and histologically. Early recognition and initiation of steroid treatment might prevent repetitive, deforming breast biopsies.

3/32. Observations of an idiopathic granulomatous mastitis.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a very rare benign breast disease, which mimics breast cancer both clinically and mammographically. Most cases have an unknown aetiology, however, we found an alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. A literature review is presented and the controversies in diagnosis and management are discussed.

4/32. Imprint cytology of non-specific granulomatous mastitis.

Non-specific granulomatous mastitis (NSGM) is a tumor-like inflammatory condition involving breast lobules. Its recognition is of great significance because of clinical masquerade to invasive carcinoma. A 25-year-old woman developed a palpable breast lump with clinical and mammographic findings suggestive of malignancy. touch imprint cytology of the excised lump was consistent with a granulomatous inflammation while histopathological examination documented a NSGM with central necrosis. Clinical, radiologic and laboratory testing failed to identify any specific causative agent.

5/32. Granulomatous inflammation of the breast in a pregnant woman: report of a case with fine needle aspiration diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Granulomatous inflammation of the breast is an inflammatory process with multiple etiologies. It can accompany breast carcinoma or be idiopathic. It often presents clinically in a fashion mimicking carcinoma. Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is strongly associated with lactation and is reported to occur in postpartum patients. This is the second fine needle aspiration (FNA) report of idiopathic granulomatous inflammation in the breast of a pregnant woman. CASE: A 27-year-old, 7-month-pregnant woman presented with a hard nodule in her right breast; on ultrasound examination it showed mixed echogenicity, suspicious for carcinoma. FNA showed granulomatous inflammation. The smears were highly cellular, with many clusters of and single epithelioid cells displaying moderate pleomorphism and prominent nucleoli in a background composed of neutrophils, plasma cells, lymphocytes and multinucleated cells. Core needle biopsy revealed a nonnecrotizing, granulomatous lesion. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of granulomatous inflammation can be challenging, and the cytologic features can be difficult to separate from those of carcinoma. The relatively rare occurrence of this lesion and its cytologic features make it a potentially difficult diagnosis and diagnostic pitfall.

6/32. Granulomatous lobular mastitis. A case report and review of the literature.

Granulomatous lobular mastitis is a rare, benign, inflammatory breast condition of unknown aetiology that can clinically mimic breast cancer. awareness of this condition is important, as the appropriate specimens must be taken to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out an infectious aetiology. While surgical excision has been the traditional therapeutic modality, the most appropriate therapy seems to involve the use of corticosteroids, even in the case of recurrence.

7/32. granulomatous mastitis: case report and review of literature.

A 38-year-old woman presented with a 5-month history of a right breast mass after delivery of her second child. The lesion simulated the picture of a carcinoma on clinical grounds. Fine-needle aspiration also reported an erroneous diagnosis of malignancy. At surgery, a discrete granuloma with microabscesses was seen without any causative organisms being identified. Open biopsy or Tru-Cut needle biopsy is recommended to prevent such an error which may result in unnecessary radical surgery.

8/32. granulomatous mastitis diagnosed by core-needle biopsy and successfully treated with corticosteroid therapy: a case report.

A 46-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a rapidly growing lump in her right breast. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology and core needle biopsy of the mass revealed many epithelioid cells admixed with multinucleated Langhans-type giant cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and stromal cells, leading to a diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis. mammography and ultrasonography provided little information for differentiating between granulomatous mastitis and carcinoma. This patient was successfully treated with low dose and short period of corticosteroid therapy.

9/32. Imaging of granulomatous mastitis: assessment of three cases.

granulomatous mastitis is a benign, inflammatory breast disease of unknown aetiology, which can mimic breast carcinoma in its clinical manifestations. Imaging features of three cases of granulomatous mastitis mimicking breast carcinoma on both clinical and radiographic examination are presented, with special emphasis on the role of dynamic contrast-enhanced-magnetic resonance mammography in the differential diagnosis.

10/32. Fasciolosis (liver fluke) of the breast in a male patient: a case report.

Fasciolosis is an uncommon disease in this region, as are parasitic infections of the breast. This report describes a 56-year-old man with a previous history of liver abscess presenting with a painful breast mass. He underwent a mastectomy and is well. The pathological findings revealed chronic granulomatous mastitis with fasciola spp. ova. The literature on this very rare condition is reviewed.
