1/8. Burkitt's lymphoma presenting as lower lip paraesthesia in a 24 year old Nigerian. Case report.

An unusual case of stage D Burkitt's lymphoma in a 24 year old Nigerian female undergraduate is reported. There was a four month history of left lower lip paraesthesia followed three months later by a slowly progressive 'pimple-sized' nodular mandibular swelling arising from the mental foramen region. A full-blown, rapidly developing abdominal mass manifested only three weeks after a biopsy of the mandibular swelling. Aspiration of the latter and a histologic report of the mandibular mass confirmed Burkitt's lymphoma. The patient responded very well to appropriate chemotherapy. Clinicians should not overlook insidious jaw swellings in any adult residing in the endemic zone of Burkitt's lymphoma, in view of the fact that successful therapy is dependent on early diagnosis. Mental nerve paraesthesia is very rarely seen in Burkitt's lymphoma.

2/8. Anaesthesia of the right lower hemilip as a first manifestation of multiple myeloma. Presentation of a clinical case.

multiple myeloma is a malignant proliferation of plasma cells. It may affect any of various bones, causing osteolytic lesions with a characteristic "punched out" radiographic appearance. The commonest symptom is bone pain. One of the most frequent locations is the mandible. Symptoms of multiple myeloma of the mandible include tumefaction, non-specific pain, tooth mobility and sometimes loss, and paraesthesia of the dental nerve. Here we report a case of multiple myeloma of the mandible which was unusual in that the presenting complaint was anaesthesia of the right lower hemilip.

3/8. Microcystic adnexal carcinoma: an unusual cause of swelling and paraesthesia of the lower lip.

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) is an uncommon, recently described, cutaneous adnexal malignant neoplasm, associated with significant morbidity as a consequence of its propensity for perineural invasion. The present report details the clinical and histological features of MAC in a young female presenting with lower labial swelling and paraesthesia.

4/8. Fracture in the chin area: an unusual case of mandibular torus fracture.

Mandibular torus fracture as a result of accidental trauma has not been reported to date in the dental literature. This study describes the case of a young adult male who suffered multiple fractures affecting the teeth and mandibular torus secondary to chin area trauma due to a bicycle accident; the first manifestation of bone damage being left unilateral paraesthesia of the lip. An occlusal x-ray study of the affected area was made to evaluate possible fracture, as unlike centred periapical x-rays and orthopantomography, it is able to reveal the existence of a fracture line of the alveolar wall. In the associated presence of paraesthesia, a computed tomographic study is advisable.

8/8. Lower lip paraesthesia following restoration of a second premolar tooth. Case report.

A forty year old female patient developed paraesthesia of the right side of her lower lip following the placement of an extensive pin-retained amalgam restoration in her lower right second premolar tooth. Radiographs indicated that the mental foramen was close to the apex of this tooth and it was assumed that postoperative pulpitis and periapical inflammation had caused the paraesthesia through the effects of pressure on the mental nerve. The paraesthesia resolved following endodontic treatment of the lower second premolar tooth and the patient has had no further signs or symptoms.
