1/3. Nerve sheath myxoma (neurothekeoma) in the tongue of a newborn.

Nerve sheath myxoma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor that rarely occurs in the oral cavity; experience with these lesions is therefore limited. The lesion described in this report appeared clinically as a gradually enlarging, painless growth arising on the tongue of a newborn girl. Microscopically, the lesion was characterized by nodules of spindle-shaped cells with abundant myxoid stroma. Immunohistochemical studies were consistent with a nerve sheath neoplasm.

2/3. Nerve sheath myxoma of the tongue in a child.

Nerve sheath myxoma (NSM) is a benign peripheral nervous system tumour that rarely occurs in the oral cavity. Among 17 cases of oral NSM described in the literature (average patient age 33 years), only two, including the present case, have been reported in children. The present case occurring in an 8-year-old boy was therefore extremely rare. Histopathologically, the tumour was found as multinodules under the mucosal epithelium, and was composed of spindle- or stellate-shaped cells with a myxoid background that stained with alcian blue and toluidine blue. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were strongly positive for S-100 beta protein and neuron-specific enolase. These results suggested that the tumour originated from schwann cells.

3/3. Nerve sheath myxoma of the oral cavity: case report and review.

Nerve sheath myxoma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor that rarely occurs in the oral cavity; approximately 12 cases have been reported to date. On histologic evaluation the lesions consist of closely aggregated fascicles that vary considerably in cellularity. Some of the lesions are predominantly myxoid with widely spaced, stellate-shaped cells. Other lesions consist of closely aggregated spindle cells in a matrix that appears fibrous yet stains strongly for acid mucopolysaccharides (extracellular mucin). Small numbers of mitotic figures may be observed. Because of their rarity and unusual histologic appearance, it is advisable that the pathologist be familiar with these lesions; they may be mistaken for other myxoid lesions of the oral mucosa. We describe a single case of nerve sheath myxoma that arose in the buccal mucosa in a woman.
