1/6. Endometrial carcinoma metastasis to the distal phalanx of the hallux: a case report.

Endometrial carcinoma is the most common invasive cancer of the female genital tract and accounts for 7% of all invasive cancer in women. Bony metastasis is uncommon with endometrial carcinoma and distal metastasis is very rare. The purpose of this paper is to present a case of an 86 year-old female with endometrial carcinoma metastasis to the distal phalanx of the hallux. The patient had a known history of endometrial carcinoma with metastases (FIGO IIIC), and had been diagnosed with pulmonary and bony metastases 2 months prior to presentation. Her initial foot complaint was of a painful, infected ingrown toenail. The infection continued to progress following avulsion of the nail, and the patient was then diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Given her past history, the possibility of metastasis to the hallux was also considered. A hallux amputation was performed, and the pathology report revealed the diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma metastasis to the distal phalanx of the hallux. While the amputation site healed uneventfully, the patient refused further treatment measures for her carcinoma and eventually succumbed to the disease.

2/6. Hallux hammer toe secondary to pseudomonas osteomyelitis.

The authors present two cases of resultant hallux hammer toe secondary to the definitive treatment of hallux sesamoidal osteomyelitis. pseudomonas osteomyelitis developed in both cases following puncture wounds to the first metatarsophalangeal joint complex. The authors also review the literature on pseudomonas osteomyelitis secondary to puncture wounds and the development of hallux hammer toe after removal of the involved sesamoid bones.

3/6. Squamous cell carcinoma complicating chronic osteomyelitis in a toe: a case report and review of the literature.

Squamous cell carcinoma arising from chronic osteomyelitis is uncommon. Although the majority of cases occur in the lower extremity, incidence in the foot is relatively rare, and in the toe, exceptional. This report illustrates a particularly unusual incidence of squamous cell carcinoma complicating chronic osteomyelitis of the hallux. Guidelines for early diagnosis, recommendations for treatment, and prognostic data are included.

5/6. Atypical presentation of osteomyelitis of the distal phalanx of the hallux.

In this paper, the authors describe an atypical case of osteomyelitis that occurred concurrently with onychocryptosis. The bony involvement was localized and the patient is asymptomatic 12 months after surgical intervention.

6/6. Hallux amputation in combination with a lumbar sympathectomy for treatment of a non-healing ulceration in a patient with Buerger's disease.

Buerger's disease is a distal vascular occlusive disease primarily affecting those with a history of tobacco use. Treatment of digital pathology can be quite difficult as a result. This paper discusses a patient who developed an ulceration of the left hallux that did not respond to local wound care and antibiosis. A lumbar sympathectomy was performed in conjunction with a hallux amputation to promote distal vasodilation and enhance the patient's ability to heal.
