1/6. Mycotic abdominal aneurysm: report of a case with emphasis on the presence of gas echoes.

Mycotic abdominal aneurysm is a relatively rare disease and its sonographic (US) findings have rarely been reported. We present a case of mycotic aneurysm of the common iliac artery in which the initial US showed a slightly wall-thickened abdominal aorta with gas echoes in the wall, a second US 6 days later showed a rapid increase in aortic size, and an emergent surgical intervention showed a mycotic aneurysm. This interesting observation suggested that the presence of gas echoes is a useful US finding indicating the beginning of a mycotic aneurysm and, when encountering this US finding, that emergent treatment should be considered to prevent delay in patient management.

3/6. Rare infections are just an airplane trip away: Salmonella typhi meningitis in a recent immigrant to the united states.

We report a case of a 24-year-old immigrant from bangladesh with Salmonella typhi meningitis, a rare disease in the united states, especially among adults. The common manifestations of meningitis such as neck rigidity and changes in mental status did not develop and Kernig sign was absent. The patient was successfully treated with intravenous ceftriaxone. This case demonstrates the importance of considering endemic infections in the country of origin when recent immigrants and returnees to the united states present with febrile illness.

4/6. ultrasonography of the thyroid. An intracystic carcinoma and mousetyphoid induced abscess. A report of two cases.

Two rare diseases of the thyroid gland are described. One, an intracystic carcinoma, has apparently only been described once before. The other, a mousetyphoid induced abscess, is extremely rare. Without ultrasonography both conditions would have been misdiagnosed in the first instance. It is advocated that all uncertain thyroid conditions and all "cold" areas on scintigraphy should be examined with ultrasonography.

6/6. skull osteomyelitis due to Salmonella species: two case reports and review.

osteomyelitis of the skull is a rare disease. We describe two cases due to salmonella typhimurium and review 10 previously reported cases of salmonella osteomyelitis of the skull. This infection is frequently complicated by extradural abscess, which may be asymptomatic. diagnostic imaging by means of computed tomographic scanning with contrast or gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging should be performed to detect this complication. A good outcome can be expected with a combination of surgery and antibiotic therapy.
