1/24. Nested polymerase chain reaction on vaginal smears of tuberculous cervicitis. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous cervicitis (TC) is a rare disease the diagnosis of which is based on the microscopic and/or cultural recognition of mycobacteria. In recent years, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), especially with double-round amplification ("nested" PCR [nPCR]), has been increasingly used for rapid detection of mycobacteria in clinical samples. CASE: The present case is the first example of tuberculosis diagnosed with the aid of nPCR amplification of mycobacterial dna fragments on smeared and Papanicolaou-stained cytologic material. First detected on vaginal smears, the amplicon IS6110 was subsequently identified also on paraffin-embedded tissue sections. CONCLUSION: The technique described here could also be applied to aspiration cytology smears to give rapid and accurate information on mycobacterial infections.

2/24. Acute hepatobiliary tuberculosis: a report of two cases and a review of the literature.

Two cases of hepatobiliary tuberculosis are described. Case one, the macronodular type of hepatic tuberculosis, presented as pyrexia of unknown origin and was eventually diagnosed by sectional imaging when a mass lesion developed in the liver and aspiration revealed acid-fast bacilli. Case two presented with jaundice due to a hilar bile duct stricture. The patient was successfully treated by repeated bile duct stenting and later chemotherapy for tuberculosis. In both cases previous positive histology or culture would have expedited diagnosis and treatment. Acute hepatobiliary tuberculosis remains a rare disease. Suspicion of the disease and adequate biopsy are important to allow prompt appropriate treatment.

3/24. Tuberculous otitis media in a four-month-old infant.

tuberculosis of the middle ear is currently a rare disease but still occurs and may cause permanent hearing loss. A four-month-old infant with chronic left-ear drainage was diagnosed with tuberculous otitis media by biopsy examination and PPD positivity without BCG. He was treated successfully with antituberculous therapy. tuberculosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic ear infection, especially in young infants.

4/24. The association of secondary tonsillar and laryngeal tuberculosis: a case report and literature review.

Tonsillar and laryngeal tuberculosis are rare diseases. We report a case with a tonsillar and laryngeal lesion. Histopathological and bacteriological examinations established the diagnosis of tonsillar and laryngeal tuberculosis associated with asymptomatic pulmonary focus.

5/24. Sinonasal tuberculosis associated with osteomyelitis of the ethmoid bone and cervical lymphadenopathy.

Sinonasal tuberculosis is a rare disease; its association with osteomyelitis of surrounding bone and cervical lymphadenopathy has been reported rarely. In this article, we report a case of sinonasal tuberculosis that was complicated by osteomyelitis of the ethmoid bone and cervical lymphadenopathy. infection of the bone was demonstrated by biopsy and (99m)Tc-MDP bone single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and cervical lymphadenopathy was confirmed by histology. This case will be discussed with specific emphasis on the imaging characteristics.

6/24. Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis.

Isolated nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare disease. It has been reported as cases in recent years. An incidentally found case without any nasal or otological symptoms is presented.

7/24. CT and MRI appearance of a fistula between the right and left main bronchus caused by tracheobronchial tuberculosis.

tuberculosis of the trachea and main bronchi is a relatively rare disease seen predominantly in elderly patients. We present a case of a fistula between the right and left main bronchus owing to tuberculosis. We describe the CT and MRI appearances.

8/24. Tuberculous otitis media: a difficult diagnosis and report of four cases.

Tuberculous otitis media is a rare disease. Due to the condition's rarity and its usually indolent course, the diagnosis is often delayed. This can lead to irreversible complications, such as permanent hearing loss or facial nerve paralysis. tuberculosis of the middle ear cleft, as this disease's first presentation, is indeed very rare. Surgery may be carried out prior to diagnosis occasionally, i.e., middle ear exploration for chronic middle ear disease. We present four cases of tuberculous otitis media which occurred as the first presentation of the disease. The patients did not present with the classic symptoms of middle ear tuberculosis. The diagnosis was based on the histology following middle ear exploration for chronic middle ear disease. None of the patients presented any other systemic involvement. We present a review of this disease's clinical symptoms and the diagnostic tests available.

9/24. Oropharyngeal tuberculosis causing severe odynophagia and dysphagia.

Oropharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare disease and is usually secondary to laryngeal involvement in pulmonary tuberculosis. The major symptom in such patients is sore throat. Here, we report a case of tuberculosis of the posterior oropharyngeal wall without laryngeal involvement and causing severe dysphagia and odynophagia without esophageal or mediastinal involvement. The unusual presentation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis is emphasized, and its diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Isolated nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare disease with very few cases having been reported in recent years. We report a case presenting in the United Kingdom with unilateral otalgia and otorrhoea.
