Can aids infected blood enter a dry healing cut?

For aids to spread through blood to blood contact, would both the aids infected person and aids-free person need to be bleeding? Or can aids spread through dry cuts that aren't bleeding? And how likely are you to get aids without doing anything involving dirty needles or having unprotected sex?
----------

A scab acts as a barrier so most of the time you'd be just fine if you got AIDS infected blood on a scab or healing wound... BUT if there is a crack or opening in the scab you could possibly become infected but chances are low. More of a risk if you had a huge, gaping bleeding wound that came in contact with a large amount of AIDS infected blood.  (+ info)

What are the chances of contracting aids from getting a tatoo?

when I get a little bit older I really want a tatoo, but my only fear is that I will contract aids from it. What are the chances?
----------

Make sure you watch the tattoo artist assemble the equipment. The needle and other supplies must be sterile. Make sure the needle is taken out of an unopened sterile package, and if it's not, leave! Make sure you ask around to make sure you're going to someone reputable. I would say your chances are very low.  (+ info)

What are the chances of getting AIDS from getting stuck with a used needle?

Health care workers do occasionally get AIDS from poking their finger or hand with a used needle. But the experts say there is only a small chance of it happening.
My professor said it is less than a One percent (1%) chance that you would get HIV or AIDS from a needle stick. Is that true?
Then what percent of a chance is it really of getting AIDS like that?
----------

As a nurse I can tell you, we don't know what kind of lives ppl lead. The church going modest looking man could be hooking up with hookers on the side & putting his wife at risk as well. Everybody is a potential for carrying the HIV virus. When it comes to needle sticks we don't take any chances. In a health-care setting that is taken very seriously and it be should taken very seriously. When needle sticks occur you have to fill out paperwork and then you have to get tested for the HIV virus, Hepatitis, and I'm sure other blood contagious diseases.

Maybe there is only a 1 percent chance of actually getting HIV from a needle stick but why would anyone take that chance & not get tested. It sort of sounds like your professor was a little blase about it. Those matters are taken very serious in a health-care setting and if it's not, then it should be. Regardless though, it is OSHA law that they have you get tested anyways.  (+ info)

HIV/AIDS is the disease which is affecting the world so much; especially the African countries. More people are dying each and everyday; a lot of orphans suffering without assistance. We need to join together and fight this disease.

about 25 years ago. Strange that you ask this question since there was a special covering it on FRONTLINE. You can watch it online here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/aids/view/

It was called Frontline: The Age of AIDS

First known case of human HIV infection
A blood sample is taken in 1959 from a man living in Leopoldville, Belgian Congo, now Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). For decades, the sample is stored away in a freezer. In 1998, after sophisticated testing is developed for HIV, the blood sample from 1959 is tested and confirmed as positive for HIV.

taken from same website - there is actually a time line at this link here:

The friction you feel in your vaginal walls causes (produces) the HIV virus - and if you have sex and get dry, you'll get HIV...
so - DO NOT HAVE SEX - EVER!

What are the chances of having AIDS if you never had sex or used needles?

How else can someone get AIDS? Can you get it from scraping your foot or hand on an infected nail? Can you get it from sharing the same bath water with someone who has it? If AIDS can't live in the air then how is it people can get it through sharing needles?
----------

HIV cant live outside the human body. Its a virus and can only replicate within human cells. It can survive in blood outside the human body, but only for a short time. People get it from sharing needles because small amounts of blood stay on or in the needles.
The only way you can catch it is by direct contact with infected body fluids for example through unprotected sex, blood transfusions (blood is screened thoroughly these days so this is very very unlikely) and through sharing needles.
You cannot get it from kissing, toilet seats or sharing bathwater!  (+ info)

how likely are you to get aids from accidently rubbing your cut on someone elses cut?

Is the only way people get aids from cut-to-cut contact is if they're bored and say to their friend "hey, lets rub our cuts together!"? How likely are you to accidently rub your cut on someone elses who has aids?
----------

Well you reduce your chances to zero if you dont do something as silly as rubbing your cut on someone elses. Theres other things such as hepatitis you can get anyway so a tip is just never do that.  (+ info)

How long can AIDS live outside the human body?

Also, what would it take to clean off something that has been exposed to fluids infected with aids, like a toilet seat?
----------

Exactly how long HIV virus survives outside the body depends on a lot of factors such as temperature, presence of fluids/moisture etc. On the other hand, HIV infected blood stored in a blood bank can remain infective for weeks or as long as the blood is adequately stored. Suffice it to say that under normal conditions, virus present in blood or other body fluids does not survive for long if the fluids dry up, or are exposed to sun or heat. This time is a matter of hours at most. Dried blood stains on instruments such as knives or scissors would not expect to have viable HIV after the stains are thoroghly dry whether the instruments were stored in a cupboard or in the open. As far as your accidental exposure to a blood stained scissor, please do not worry as there is no chance that you would be infected.

CDC laboratory studies have shown that drying HIV reduces the viral amounts by 90 to 99 percent within several hours. (cdc.gov)

A HIV virus particle cannot survive on its own outside the body - it normally lasts no longer than a few seconds when exposed to air.(http://www.mcld.co.uk)

Toilet seat that exposed to hiv can be cleaned by any disinfectant.  (+ info)
