The primary aim of treatment is to correct the underlying disease process. Often correcting the underlying cause results in resolution of the lesions.

Correct hyperinsulinaemia through diet and medication
Lose weight with obesity-associated AN
Excise or treat underlying tumor
Stop offending medicines in drug-induced AN
In hereditary AN, lesions tend to enlarge gradually before stabilizing and/or regressing on their own.

There is no specific treatment for AN. Treatments considered are used primarily to improve cosmetic appearance and include topical retinoids, dermabrasion and laser therapy.

Acanthosis nigricans?

CAN YOU DIED WITH ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS ?

PS:ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS DIABETES
----------

Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition characterized by dark, thick, velvety skin in body folds and creases. Most often, acanthosis nigricans affects your armpits, groin and neck.

With acanthosis nigricans, you may naturally be concerned about the appearance of your skin. Some steps may help lighten the affected areas of your skin. There's no specific treatment for acanthosis nigricans — but treating any underlying conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, may cause the changes in your skin changes to fade

Characteristics of acanthosis nigricans include:

Skin changes. Skin changes are the only signs of acanthosis nigricans. You'll notice dark, thick, velvety skin in body folds and creases — typically in your armpits, groin and neck. Sometimes the lips, palms or soles of the feet are affected as well.
Slow progression. The skin changes appear slowly, sometimes over months or years.
Possible itching. Rarely, the affected areas may itch.

Acanthosis nigricans is often associated with conditions that increase your insulin level, such as type 2 diabetes or being overweight. If your insulin level is too high, the extra insulin may trigger activity in your skin cells. This may cause the characteristic skin changes.

In some cases, acanthosis nigricans is inherited. Certain medications — such as human growth hormone, oral contraceptives and large doses of niacin — can contribute to the condition. Other hormone problems, endocrine disorders or tumors may play a role as well. Rarely, acanthosis nigricans is associated with certain types of cancer
Acanthosis nigricans can begin at any age. It's most obvious in people who have dark skin.

Consult your doctor if you notice changes in your skin — especially if the changes appear suddenly. You may have an underlying condition that needs treatment.

Acanthosis nigricans is typically detected during a skin exam. Rarely, a small skin sample is removed (biopsy) for examination in a lab.

If the cause of acanthosis nigricans is unclear, your doctor may recommend blood tests, X-rays or other tests to look for possible underlying causes.

There's no specific treatment for acanthosis nigricans. Treating any underlying conditions may cause the skin changes to fade, however. If you're overweight, losing excess pounds can help. Sometimes dietary changes are helpful, too.

Lightening affected areas
If you're concerned about the appearance of your skin, your doctor may prescribe a cream or lotion to help lighten the affected areas. Some of these lotions contain modified vitamin A products, such as tretinoin (Retin-A, others), or other medications. Sometimes oral medications, such as isotretinoin (Accutane, others), are helpful. Fish oil supplements also may be recommended. Dermabrasion or laser therapy may help reduce the thickness of certain affected areas

Hello everybody, i was just wondering if Acanthosis Nigricans is curable?

I am planning on losing 72 pounds....cause i am very fat...but if umm i lose all this weight will my Acanthosis Nigricans take off?
----------

Losing weight by eating healthy should help reduce the circulating insulin and decrease it quite a bit..
You will have to eat a balanced diet, whatever you are eating now is causing you to have too much circulating insulin..
If it still continues when you have lost the weight, then you will want to have another check up done to check for other causes.
If there's nothing else wrong, your doctor can prescribe salicylic acid creams to remove the outer layers of skin to reduce the appearance of it..  (+ info)

Does acanthosis nigricans fade if you lose weight?

I have lost about 40 pounds now. I am currently 193 lbs. I have dark brown spots on my elbows, knees, and around my neck. I am very sure that it is acanthosis nigricans. DOes anyone know if this will fade if I continue to lose weight. My doctor said I am prediabetic. I have been exercising regularly and eating a diet low in sugar and starches. Any help is appreciated.
----------

What makes you sure you have Acanthosis nigricans? Were you diagnosed by a dr? It usually causes velvety, light-brown-to-black, markings usually on the neck, under the arms or in the groin. Acanthosis nigricans is most often associated with obesity.

Eating too much of the wrong foods, especially starches and sugars, can cause insulin resistance. This will result in elevated insulin levels. Most patients with acanthosis nigricans have a higher insulin level than those of the same weight without acanthosis nigricans. Elevated levels of insulin in most cases probably cause acanthosis nigricans. The elevated insulin levels in the body activates insulin receptors in the skin, forcing it to grow abnormally.

Reducing the circulating insulin by dieting or medication can lead to improvement of the skin problem.

My son was diagnosed with Acanthosis Nigricans?

My 14 year old son's dermatologist diagnosed him with Acanthosis Nigricans, should I be worried? He is not at all over weight so what could be the causes of this?
----------

Physicians can usually diagnose acanthosis nigricans by simply looking at a patient's skin. If no clear cause of acanthosis nigricans is obvious, it may be necessary to search for one. Blood tests, an endoscopy, or x-rays may be required to eliminate the possibility of diabetes or cancer as the cause.

Did he have a skin biopsy. ?

Acanthosis nigricans often fades if the underlying cause can be determined and treated appropriately.  (+ info)

What foods should I eat to fight insulin resistance?...I think I have Acanthosis Nigricans?

all online sources are saying insulin resistance is caused by too many sugary foods, and such....

can someone give me an idea of what I can eat on a day to day basis to stop the acanthosis nigricans?
----------

If you have Acanthosis Nigricans you need to get tested for diabetes. Type 2 can be symptomless for years, until it damages your body so much that the complications start.

Ask your doctor to do an HbA1c test, and a Glucose Tolerance Test too.

In the meantime, cut back on sugar and refined flour products. Try the South Beach diet, its low carb and should help, but you still need to get tested because diabetes and pre-diabetes are not something you can ignore or treat on your own.

Is it bad to eat high sugar fruits if you have acanthosis nigricans?

Is it wrong or unhealthy to eat fruits high in sugar such as bananas if u have acanthosis nigricans
----------

Depends, if you have this disorder due to insulin resistance than it might be a little unhealthy. If you're insulin resistant, you're going to want to stay away from sugars and carbs since your body can't break them down as easily due to your insulin; and then it will cause high ketone levels and secrete itself through your urine. So if you urinate frequently, that is a sign. So be careful.  (+ info)
