can someone please tell me about acanthosis nigricans and how it relates to diabetes?

Acanthosis nigricans is often associated with conditions that increase your insulin level, such as type 2 diabetes or being overweight. If your insulin level is too high, the extra insulin may trigger activity in your skin cells. This may cause the characteristic skin changes.

In some cases, acanthosis nigricans is inherited. Certain medications — such as human growth hormone, oral contraceptives and large doses of niacin — can contribute to the condition. Other hormone problems, endocrine disorders or tumors may play a role as well. Rarely, acanthosis nigricans is associated with certain types of cancer.

what is the cure for Acanthosis nigricans and how common does it occur?

Acanthosis nigricans is a disorder that may begin at any age. It causes velvety, light-brown-to-black, markings usually on the neck, under the arms or in the groin. Acanthosis nigricans is most often associated with being overweight.

Eating too much of the wrong foods, especially starches and sugars, raises insulin levels. Most patients with acanthosis nigricans have a high insulin level, higher than those of the same weight who don't have acanthosis nigricans. Elevated levels of insulin in most cases probably cause acanthosis nigricans. This happens when there is insulin "spillover" into the skin. This activates insulin receptors in the skin and forces it to grow abnormally. Reducing the circulating insulin by a special diet can lead to a rapid improvement of the skin problem.

When acanthosis nigricans develops in people who are not overweight, a medical work-up should be done. Rarely acanthosis nigricans is associated with a tumor. In these cases acanthosis can bee seen in extra places, such as the lips or hands and is unusually severe. Sometimes acanthosis nigricans is congenital or due to an endocrine (glandular) disorder.

Treatment to just improve the appearance includes Retin-A, 20% urea, alpha hydroxyacids, and salicylic acid prescriptions.  (+ info)

how to get rid of acanthosis nigricans?

it is a really disgusting skin disease and i went to a physician and he said there is really nothing i can do but change my diet.that doesn't sound right...so someone please help!!!
----------

Actually he is close to right! Acanthosis nigricans is a discoloring skin rash usually on your neck or under your arms. It can be related to diabetes. The best way to prevent diabetes is to watch your weight, exercise and eat well. The main advice I have for you is to avoid all sodas. Next I would limit any fruit juice, but fresh fruit is fine. Also don't eat any fast foods and avoid candies and white bread. You should see that skin rash get better in a few months if you stick to it! Good luck.  (+ info)

I have acanthosis nigricans (a mild case), but i'm also overweight can someone suggest a diet plan?

i've done some research on acathosis nigricans and it has been stated that it most likely occurs due to insulin resitance which could be a symptom of pre-diabetes. I would like to change my diet in order to control blood glucose levels. Can someone please help me out with a new diet plan that would take into consideration blood glucose levels?

Dirty neck or acanthosis nigricans?

So yeah, i have had this problem for a while, I mean since I was around 10 possibly even younger and there appears to be dirt around my neck. I'm confused because by standards I'm perfectly healthy yet its not dirt, I workout constant and have always consumed healthy foods but this only points to acanthosis nigricans which is a side affect of diabetes (scares the hell out of me). Any suggestions other than rubbing alcohol. The other cause I have read about is a tumor.
----------

My "Endocrinologist" told me that my skin darkening was a result of my "free testosterone" levels being too high. I was diagnosed with "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome" as a result of the high levels. Nothing too serious.

I also have been diagnosed with being in a "Pre-diabetic" state because my "insulin" levels were also way too high. Never with "Diabetes" itself.

My skin darkening went away when I learned how to keep my blood sugar levels in a normal state which kept my insulin down. I did that by not eating carbohydrates in the morning because that set the standard for my insulin levels for the day. Then, staying away from sugars and anything else that would raise my blood sugar, all day. After I could keep my "insulin" down, because they affect each other, my "free testerone" levels stayed down with it, thus making my skin discoloration go back to normal.

I was afraid I had the "Acanthosis Nigricans" as well, but I didn't. I don't think it's a tumor because you've had the discoloration so long with no other side effects or ill health.

I would say that you most likely have imbalanced hormones and an "Endocrinologist" specializes in that and will test you based on your symptoms and descriptions. Ease your mind and go get tested. It's scary, I know, but worth it. If you take care of yourself now you will live a longer and healthier life. You're worth it. Besides, if you wait longer and your hormones get worse, other parts of your body will discolor, as well, and sometimes it never goes away, like some of mine.

I never did find any creams or lotions that "really" worked. I tried the ones that said they "lightened" the skin but I never saw any results. Alcohol didn't work for me either. Did you ever try a body sloughing cream or a body exfoliating cream? I know it only takes off the dead skin cells but it is, atleast, a temporary fix, or maybe more.

You will figure this out in time and I'm sure your health is good. Best of luck! I will check back to see if you have any questions or comments for me later. Take care.  (+ info)
