Are plasma transfusions indicated for a patient with nephrotic syndrome?

he has acquired nephrotic syndrome due to the anticonvulsant medication given to him (he has brain cancer and is going through chemo and radio). He won't excrete more than 2cc a time and is being given Lasix. Doctors came up with the idea of giving him fresh plasma transfusions to help him with the fluid retention. Isn't this against indications?

Why does AIDS stands for A( Immune Deficiency)S while HIV stands for H(Immunodeficiency)V?

Why does AIDS stands for Acquired ( Immune Deficiency )Syndrome while HIV stands for Human (Immunodeficiency) Virus?
Is there anything special here?
----------

Because AIS or HIDV would sound weird. They want things to be easy to say.  (+ info)

WHy does HIV come before AIDS if acquired means Have to do something to get it?

Its kind of ironic cause HIV is what you get first. HIV stands for Human Immune Virus.

Aids stands for Aquired Immune Virus Syndrome...
Acquired means you have to do something to get it, Immune is what your bodys self defense is Virus obviously from the HIV and Syndrome means chronic.
Only question is why do you have to do osmething to get AIDS but HIV you already have wouldnt it be AHIV and then get IDS???

Do we have an Immunodeficiency syndrome?

My mother had varicella a long time ago. Then she had pneumonia and encephalitis one year after that. The encephalitis was really bad, she couldn't speak and write for one year and she had necrosis on her brain. Our medical system is quite bad. Luckily my aunt had money to buy treatment and she only has a slight speech problem - talks slower, has some lapsus. But she is fit to work and her judgment and movement are normal. After 7 years she had necrosis on her femur head, she did surgery... But that's another story, it happened from the Hydrocortisone she took when ill.
I had chickenpox when I was in primary school, then, about 4-5 years later (can't recall) I had Herpes Zoster. Luckily I didn't experience postherpetic neuralgia afterwards until now, (I am 21).
Does this mean we definetly have a genetic immunodeficiency? Or isn't it a rule? Should I get tested to find out?
If we do, what other complications may we experience?
P.S. I also had a really severe case of laryngitis back then, for 2 weeks or so, where I'd choke all the time, stay in bed with a wet drape at the window, but I'm not sure that's relevant.
----------

It is possible, and there are genetic immunodeficiency disorders, but that is something that should be tested for. However, it's not an automatic diagnosis, and there are other factors which could cause a predisposition to infections such as the ones you mention. Herpes zoster (assume you mean shingles) at such a young age is unusual though, so I'd request follow up with the issue.  (+ info)

You know that woman who acquired a foreign accent after a stroke [Foreign Accent Syndrome]?

I first heard of Foreign Accent Syndrome on that show 'Mystery ER' on Discovery Channel...

I just don't understand HOW this condition exists ! Complicated neurological explanations or not, it just doesn't make sense. Accents are picked up from being native to the area. This is a fact, because we see how each country or area has its own accent.... *Accents are not hard wired into our brain*.. They are picked up as we grow..

so how can this BE?

I think the people who claim to have this condition are fakers.... But that's just me....
----------

I don't have any real knowledge on this topic, but my best guess would be...

I know a stroke can cause paralysis. When you're trying to fake speaking with an accent, you often have to move your mouth and tongue in a different way to what you've done before - especially if you want the accent to flawless.

I guess it's possible that after a stroke, a person's mouth and tongue could be effected and pulled in a certain way that changes the way they speak. There are MANY languages and accents out there, so I guess a slight tweak to your mouth and you're bound to sound like one of them!  (+ info)

have you experienced an acquired brain injury that is subtle and only manifests in say, perseveration?

I am not sure what is going on in my head right now. I passed all the tests but I am convinced that I might have frontal lobe damage (temporary, perhaps permanent, yet I see such a scenario unlikely). I have perseveration....Sometimes write the same word repeatedly and do not seem to realize. In other instances, I make careless spelling errors, etc.

Are there any symptoms that I should look for if I were to have experienced trauma in the frontal lobe, and what would be the progressive symptoms of say, frontal lobe syndrome?

Can it be detected by a CT scan or simply an MRI scan?
----------

I wouldn't be quick to make a brain injury self-diagnosis, as brain injuries are very difficult to begin with. As you have passed many tests, you do not have severe damage, though your new problems suggest that there is a medical issue going on. I would suggest that you get a referral to a good neurologist and let them see if there is something going on. You are the one who knows the problem the best, so if you feel there are unanswered questions, then it is in you best interest to be persistent and try to get an answer. Even MRIs and CT scans may not be able to detect slight brain injuries, so don't get disheartened if nothing comes up.

You'll get through this. I'll be thinking of you.  (+ info)
