Carbs or protein - what to eat after a workout?

I usually workout in the mornings and come home for lunch. I have heard that if you eat a meal that is primarily made up of carbs after a workout, you will get bulky, but if you eat more protein, you will be more lean and toned. Is this true? What is good to eat after a workout? I'd rather be lean/toned, not bulky. I am a runner; I do cardio and resistance training at the gym if that helps. Thank you!

Immediately after working you you should consume simple sugars to restore the gylcogen stores in your muscles, along with 30-40 grams of protein. best bet is a a gatorade and a protein bar. Chocolate milk is also good post work out.  (+ info)

Intense resistance training while on a low-carb diet, high protein diet.?

I'm on a low carb diet where I eat roughly 1500 calories a day, with about 60-80g of carbs. The rest of the calories come from protein and fat.

See more: http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2007/04/06/how-to-lose-20-lbs-of-fat-in-30-days-without-doing-any-exercise/

I've been on the diet for a week and have lost 4 lbs. Ultimate goal is to lose 10 more lbs. of fat. I'm just a little concerned that if I keep this up, I'm going to lose muscle. I weigh 190 with about 16-18% body fat.

Can anybody recommend a training program to help preserve muscle while on this diet. I'm thinking heavy resistance training 3 days a week and cardio 1-2 days a week, each session for about 30 min.

Your thoughts please. I don't want to change the diet too much because it seems to be working although I might consider adding whey protein post workout.

Your thoughts please...

Thanks

Oh and please don't post other better "miracle diets"

Your prayers have been answered, there are a lot of high-intensity programmes out there that will help you build muscle and lose fat. Problem is that unless you are very athletic to begin with, you might have trouble completing them.

One of them, which I can confirm works as I did it many years ago is called "Meltdown training". It's tough, but if you can stick it out you will see results: http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/meltdown_training

Then there's Meltdown II: The Death Circuit (because you will feel like death after completing the circuit and may even throw up during): http://www.tmuscle.com/article/bodybuilding/meltdown_training_ii&cr=

Dogcrap training because that's what you feel like afterwards. It is sadistic, intense and traumatic and don't even think of trying this unless you've been training for a long time: http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/how_to_build_50_pounds_of_muscle_in_12_months

There are many other ways out there but they all involve the same thing. Lift big and don't rest in between sets.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Can resistance training affect sperm volume?

If you're working out very hard every day, I would guess there is a high demand for protein and resources to repair and build new tissue. Would this increased demand lower sperm volume? If the body is using a high amount of resources to repair the body, does that mean it might not have enough energy or sufficient resources to replenish/create sperm? And if this is true, does that mean that if sperm volume is less, than muscle growth will be affected too because there are too limited amount of proteins/resources?

Would it be okay if I did resistance workouts everyday?

I'm trying to make up a workout regimen for myself. It would include running several miles everyday because I'm a runner, but then I was wondering if it would be alright if I lifted weights everyday so long as I waited 48 hours to workout the same muscles again since that's how long it takes for them to heal and be ready for use again. I would also be drinking a protein powder so that my muscles could heal quicker. Tell me what you all think.
Oh and I forgot to mention that my workout regimen would include one day off a week for weights and running. In case that helps anyone.

is this enough exercise for whey protein to help me get leaner?

I do 60 mins aerobic cardio on the treadmill every morning and resistance training every other day in the afternoon for a 1 and 30mins on my home gym. I usually eat less than 1500 calories a day .

whey protein is used as a post workout supplement to help muscle recovery and growth. you get leaner through exercise and diet. if the whey protein fits within your macros then you will maintain/lose weight. it doesn't magically make you become lean and muscular. that comes from hard word and healthy lifestyle  (+ info)

treatment of activated protein c resistant?

Protein C deficiency is an uncommon clotting disorder: approximately 1 per 700 people has inherited protein C deficiency. Since we all have 2 genes for every protein (one from mother and one from father), people can have 2 normal genes (healthy), one mutated protein S gene (heterozygous), or two mutated genes (homozygous).

Individuals with protein C deficiency are typically heterozygous. Homozygous individuals have such a severe clotting problem, that they typically die immediately after birth because of clotting everywhere; this is termed " Purpura fulminans ". Protein C deficiency can be caused by more than 100 different mutations in the protein C gene.

This makes genetic testing for the defect very difficult, time-consuming, and expensive; it is therefore not done in routine clinical practice. A few academic institutions with a special interest in protein C deficiency perform genetic testing for research purposes. In some people protein C deficiency is due to acquired (non-inherited) causes, and may be temporary.  (+ info)

Do you have to eat carbs at the same time you eat protein for muscle building effects?

I like to throw my oats in with my protein shake just to save time, so that when i eat my whole food meal, all im eating is protein & vegetables. I heard something like you need carbs to activate the muscle building effects that proteins have, so by not eating the oats at the same time as the chicken, is that affecting the effectiveness of the protein?
----------

Your muscles will store your carbohydrates in the form of glycogen for use to build and repair later, so whenever you eat your carbs doesn't really matter.  (+ info)
