What are the symptoms of agoraphobia?

I ask b/c I know I am displaying some of the symptoms. I just want to know if my symptoms are severe enough to discuss them with my Dr. One symptom is, I cannot leave the grounds of my home without going into a panic attack. Also, I feel terrified if I leave something terrible, like another 9/11 will happen. So, is this agoraphobia or paranoia?
----------

Agorophobia is a fear of the unknown. It could be where you are terrified of leaving your home. Some people cannot even go out their front door to get the newspaper or mail. They feel fear and anxiousness and panic.
I will describe mine and see if you have any or some of these symptoms.I am unable to leave the house unless i take medication. This is important for me for my doctor appointments.
My husband goes everywhere with me,as i cannot go alone and i have been such a burden on my family. They have to make sure i get to my doctors appoinments and my phyciatrist appointments.
I would rather just not think of going because i lose sleep and i pace at night thinking of having to go out the next day.I sometimes have to open a window as i fear i can't breathe due to panic from worrying about having to go to an appointment.I have had panic and anxiety attacks while out and usually my husband or daughter will realize this and take me out of the situation and take me home.I can't breathe,i feel as though i am dying and that this the end,it's over.I can't control these attacks but i do try the breating exercises.I breath in through my nose ,hold it and count to five, then breath out through my mouth. My thoughts are racing all the time as i'm always trying to find my comfort zone.Which is in bedroom with the door shut and nobody around. This is a very serious problem and i feel that you cannot be diagnosed unless you see a doctor and he will help you.But it is alot of self talk that you have to do with yourself and be strong.  (+ info)

How do I get help for Agoraphobia if I can't leave the house?

I've suffered from Agoraphobia since I was a child. Up until recently it was manageable with a range of distraction techniques, but I was taken ill, and after 2 months of complete bedrest I am now completely unable to face the outside world. I am normally a level headed person, but I have found myself experiencing anxiety attacks, palpitations, uncontrollable shaking and dizzy spells, when only thinking about going outside. I know I need to see a GP, but I just can't face leaving the house, what can I do??

What would happen if I took someone with agoraphobia out of their home?

I have been living with my boyfriend for the last four months and he is agoraphobic. I am about to go crazy myself. We have been dealing with this for two years now. What would happen if I took him an hour away to a mental hospital to get some help? He will drive with me some places but he can only go so far and we have to turn around and go home.
Would taking him to a mental hospital even help?
----------

He's not a danger to himself or others, so unless your boyfriend willingly commits himself and there is even grounds for the hospital to use their space for someone like him (just being agoraphobic is not) he won't be going to any mental hospital.

What would happen if you drove outside the limits? He'll likely become very anxious perhaps have a panic attack and more than likely be really angry with you even to the point where that would be the end of your relationship.

Your boyfriend needs something called cognitive behavioural therapy with a trained professional, ideally a psychologist. He may also require medications which can be prescribed by either a GP or a psychiatirst.  (+ info)

how long will it take for prozac to help me with my agoraphobia?

i am on week 3 of taking prozac 20 mg for anxiety and agoraphobia. How long will it take for me to see results. i have been house bound for seven months now so i am getting impatient. will it let me go back out again?
----------

I used to have agoraphobia and it sucks so bad. They say that it takes about a month for it to really start working. The best advice I can give to you is do behaviour therapy along with taking the medicine. You'll need to take little steps to get out and going and people can help you with it. Be persistent and you can get through it.  (+ info)

How would scientologists cure agoraphobia?

come on pompous Tom Cruise. Can you cure me of agoraphobia? YOu think you are an expert of the mind. No one else has been able to cure me. What can scientology do for me?
----------

Is this a real question or a rant?

There are cures and there are treatments. Most places would treat you. They would have you do it in small doses, say empowering things, try various tricks to get you past the fear. Maybe offer you drugs.

As far as cures, Scientology would do pretty much the same as a good Psychiatrist would (at about the same rate). Explore events in your past to try and find something which may have caused the phobia, have you truly confront it, and see if that cures you. But it sounds like maybe you should see a psychiatrist instead just from your tone.  (+ info)

My boyfriend suffers from agoraphobia and I'm not sure how to deal with it?

I have looked up info online about agoraphobia. I just can't find any info to help people who have an agoraphobic in their life. I care deeply for my boyfriend and I just need a better understanding of his illness so I know what to expect and how to deal with it...
----------

Well agoraphobia is a fear of being outside or in crowded places. I think the best way to help him is to support him and be patient and understanding. It is very difficult to feel out of control or feel like you will be having an anxiety attack and everyone will know about it...He is afraid of the unknown and of what has not happened yet and nothing you do I am afraid is going to help him with that...

He can take medication to assist with this so make sure he is seeing a doctor and he is taking his prescribed medication.

Loving someone with mental illness is really hard and you are a special person. There aren't any quick cures but there are things that will benefit him...

What can you do...if you are with him while he is having an anxiety attack help him with his breathing techniques...something he will learn from his doctor and make sure he takes his medication.  (+ info)

Is it possible to have claustrophobia and agoraphobia at the same time?

My mom has horrible anxiety and she passed it on to me. I am extremely uncomfortable in small places when I know I can't get out.. Elevators, planes, bathrooms.. etc. But at the same time, I hate being in large spaces. Like when I swim in the middle of the lake. I hate being out in the open. I feel like I have nothing to hold on to.

Is it even possible to have two opposite things at the same time? I feel most comfortable in regular-sized rooms. Not too big, not too small.
----------

Yes, one can have multiple phobias of tight space, wide space ( insecure ), diseases, social, relationships, being alone, crowd....a lot of normal persons have one or two phobias, or multiple phobias. But what defines normal from abnormal ? if one can recognizes, and able to handle it, it's normal, if not ? abnormal. One can also learn to live with it with some guidance of therapist or a loving compassionate person, friends... I finally overcame the fear of deep water that I can not see the bottom of it, like oceans or big lakes, by mastering my swimming ability. I'm no more afraid of the dark sea or lake waters.

How many people do exactly suffer from agoraphobia worldwide?

Please post a link with statistics if you can.
----------

Many are undiagnosed because they don't contact the outside world so it is difficult to study statistics on then.  (+ info)
