Is there any one here that suffers from social phobia or agoraphobia, or zoophobia?

if so, what are your symptoms, and how is a day in life of your phobia?

you may email me or instant message me if you'd like.
----------

I have agoraphobia. I would say a day in my life is that I can never take anything for granted. Everything is a test of will. I can't go grocery shopping without "psyching" myself into it. My heart races, I get nausea, diarrea, shaking, thinking and memory impairment, trouble speaking. Sometimes I'm truly paralyzed. I can't think, move, or speak.

I just have to keep pushing my comfort zone. For example I get all my prescriptions filled at Walmart in a city 40 miles away just because I know it will force me out of the house. I have to make that effort or I just won't ever leave these walls.

I dropped out of high school at 14 and got my diploma through correspondence. I was housebound until I was 21, but I've been in recovery for 6 years. I'll never be a social butterfly, but I have a few good friends and I enjoy some things outside my home.

Don't know if that answers your question or not. Take care.  (+ info)

How to get rid of agoraphobia?

Hi. I am 16, and I have agoraphobia, and it is ruining my life. I never leave my house, I haven't been to college in weeks, and I need to change. I really want to lose weight, and even though there is a park that I can walk around only two minutes away, I can't leave my door, as I think everyone who looks at me is judging me, and I'm going to get attacked.

How can I get rid of this?

Thanks for help
----------

I am agoraphobic. I have been since was a small child. It's not something you can just get rid of. You have to love yourself. You have to retrain your brain into thinking...I'm ok. It doesn't matter what others think. I'm worth it or God wouldn't have put me here. I deserve to be able to go places. Do something nice for someone. When or if someone says something in bad taste, just smile at them and tell them now nice that made you feel. This isn't a fix to rid you of the problem. It will get you out 50% of the time. You have to will yourself to do it. Small baby steps!!  (+ info)

How has your doctor/therapist treated your agoraphobia?

My therapist suggested today that I might be agoraphobic, mainly because I have trouble leaving and staying away from my apartment and feel very uncomfortable outside of the safety of familiar places and faces. (I won't go into details.) I am wondering what kind of therapy other agoraphobics have received. I am in traditional psychotherapy now, but think I might benefit better from cognitive behavioral therapy, both for this and my OCD/depression.

I dealt with agoraphobia, and well, Lexapro, and Xanax got me out of it. I am no longer on either one of those meds, I now take Klonopin, and Effexor XR, but to get me out of my house, I give all the credit to Lexapro, and Xanax!  (+ info)

Can anyone give me some good advice about combating agoraphobia?

I have felt like this for some time and It is getting worse. I have contemplated counselling is this a good idea.

There seems to be no reason for me being afraid to go out.
----------

Get out more!

But seriously, you should go out more, accompanied with someone you trust. It can happen if you get into the habit of not going out much, you can develop a fear of going out. In fact, it is probably the fear of feeling affraid that is the problem. Try some online self help advice.  (+ info)

How Many of the Top contributers on here have agoraphobia?

Thankyou for your responses, very interesting and terribly predictable. I am very happy, thankyou
----------

Okay. First let me make it clear that I not only have been in a lot of situations and I am educated in this area.

After that, yes, I am agoraphobic. But I don't answer unless it is something that I feel I have something to which to contribute.

Can you get benefits for having Agoraphobia?

If someone had Agoraphobia or Social Anxiety or some other condition, can they receive money benefits?
----------

It depends upon the severity of the condition. Social Security's (and SSIs) definition of disability is "an inability to perform substantial and gainful work activity due to a physical or mental disability which has lasted or is expected to last for AT LEAST twelve months." You will have to contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1212 for the current definition of the "substantial and gainful work activity" amount. If you decide to file for benefits you can call that # and make an appointment. In the meantime, get together the names and addresses of your doctor's and hospitals who have treated you for your condition.  (+ info)

How can I ease my Agoraphobia condition?

I'm going on a trip with my boyfriend and his family. My only comfortable place to be at is my home and I'm really not comfortable with his family yet. Needless to say I am only comfortable with my own family. I'm getting so stressed out just thinking about the trip this weekend. Help? My stomach is turning as I type.
----------

try to be yourself (easier said than done of course). get to know his family and see if you have anything in common with them and talk about those things instead of things you are sensitive about. sometimes you have to remember things aren't always as bad as what they seem and people often make things out to be much worse then they really are. if it makes you feel any better share these feelings with your boyfriend so he can support you.  (+ info)

I Have Generlized Anxiety Disorder and Agoraphobia What Should I Do?

I'm afraid of going to school. In Middle School I got sick and I have been so afraid of being in that same situation. And it sucks because this year I will be going to High School and I have to go. I am homebound right now but that is not an option for next year unfortunately. I am seeing a professional and am on Celexa and Buspar. I need some advice.
----------

I have the same thing. Keep taking your meds, and try practicing going places. Like, tomorrow walk out to your front yard, the next day try and get to the end of the block and so on. I know that's not really what you want to hear (trust me I know lol), but I think it's the best way to start getting out without causing yourself to much stress.

Also breathing exercises are supposed to help when you feel anxious, try laying down and taking deep slow breaths, make sure your stomach is rising up and down with each breath. This helps you to breathe normally again as anxious people don't breathe properly a lot of the time and that makes you feel anxious.

Also if you have to go out try and distract yourself from the anxiety by concentrating on a specific thing......like try and count how many blue things you see etc.

Good luck!!!  (+ info)
