Have you ever had proctalgia fugax?

It's the "anal charlie horse".

How often do you get it?
Did you see a doctor?
if so, what did he prescribe or recommend?

Info I have:

******************************************

"For most patients, symptomatic episodes are brief and infrequent, requiring no specific treatment other than reassurance and explanation of the disorder. On the other hand, a small percentage of patients have more frequent and troubling symptoms. There are limited data to guide such treatment.

Albuterol treatment was associated with a significant reduction in the duration of severe pain; the effect was most pronounced in patients who had prolonged attacks. However, the mechanism of benefit was unclear since albuterol had no significant effect on anal resting tone, sphincter relaxation, or rectal compliance while patients were asymptomatic. Other potential treatment options that have been suggested in case reports include oral clonidine (150 micrograms twice daily), topical nitroglycerin (0.3 percent), and injection of botulinum A toxin. One study demonstrated exaggerated post-relaxation contractions in proctalgia fugax patients following the administration of edrophonium chloride (a cholinesterase inhibitor").

Vomiting and amaurosis?

Hello,
few days before I started to have health problems. I feel like vomiting even if I didn't eat anything bad and I am really not pregnant:) My second problem is amaurosis even few times a day. When this happens I have to stop whatever I do, cause I really loose balance. Do you have an idea what could be this? Thank you.
----------

Are you sure it is Amaurosis?

"Those experiencing amaurosis are usually advised to consult a physician immediately as any form of vision loss, even if temporary, is a symptom that may indicate the presence of a serious ocular or systemic problem."

If you are losing balance, it may be Vertigo.

It may also be related to an inner ear infection which can lead to balance loss.

It may also be a vitamin deficiency or some other food related condition resulting in low-blood sugar or something.

In any case, you should see your doctor immediately. Telephone for an emergency appointment and tell the receptionist (if they ask) that it IS an urgent request. If you are blacking out or experiencing dizziness/loss of balance it is serious.

If you feel that you cannot travel to the doctor, then request a home visit.

You normally have to telephone before 9.30 or 10am for some doctors.  (+ info)

what treats proctalgia fugax?

this question is not abusing i really need an answer
----------

There is no known cause for proctalgia fugax, but it is thought to be related to a muscle spasm of the rectum. There is also no known cure.

There are remedies which range from warm baths (if the pain lasts long enough to draw a bath), relaxation techniques, and gentle massage of the anus. Some sufferers adovacate the use of relaxant drugs, such as Amyl nitrite. Salbutamol has even been suggested, though its effectiveness in this capacity remains unproven.  (+ info)

medical term proctalgia fugax?

This is a medical term for rectal pain
----------

Proctalgia fugax refers to pain (sometimes severe) in the rectum. It can last from a few seconds to a few minutes and often occurs spontaneously during the night. Pain sometimes accompanies orgasm and there may be an urge to defecate. The pain is sharp and gripping but remains localized. Relief is spontaneous but some people find also relief from warm baths, or ice cubes (anything to disrupt the spasms). Medications, such as diazepam, may be prescribed in cases that are very regular and/or severe.

There is no known cause for the condition but it is not thought to be psychological in origin. There is no specific treatment, simply relief measures.

It is important to see your doctor for an accurate diagnosis and to discuss treatment options.

Also Known As: Rectal Spasms

Painful rectal spasms at night. What to do? What to do?

I have been awakened at night by severe rectal pain (lasting about 5 painful minutes) so I looked it up and found that it’s called Proctalgia fugax, a severe, episodic rectal pain that usually occurs at night, a muscle cramp in the wrong place at the wrong time, rectal spasms or just plain pain in the anus…
It could last a few seconds to a few minutes so most people do not even report it to their doctors.

Warm baths and massages seem to relieve it but I’d like to know if any one of you people found other true and tried methods to relieve that pain in the butt fast.
I do not have IBS, I'm very regular and eat lots of fiber and have no problem my my digestive system.
----------

Very nasty pain that.

I had much more when I was younger but not for many years. It is very painful - I can remember sweating and feeling faint when it came on. I also had bowel pain in my lower abdo and actual rectal pain (even to touch) A friend of mine also has it.

The only thing that made it manageable was to get a heat pack on my tummy and lay on my tummy and try to relax as much as possible (it is pretty hard when you feel like you have a bunch of hyenas biting on the inside of your butt) Taking a hot bath also helped me. The problem is that it used to strike me at all sorts of times which makes it hard when you are at work. Usually though it was in the early evening and before midnight. It usually lasted around 20 mins but the peak pain for about 5 mins.

I would avouid taking anything OTC until you have had a formal diagnosis to exclude any other problems. This is usually with a colonoscopy where a scope is used to take a look around your rectum and lower bowel. This is done under a very light anaesthetic.

Taking anything with codeine (you can get pain killers with codeine otc in Australia) is not recommended due to its constipating action. You could discuss with your doctor about taking something like Buscopan (an antispasmodic).

Sorry I cant help more

What Specialist should I consult?

Born: 16 August 2000
History: Born at term, in eutocia after a normal gestation.
Reason for hospitalization: In May, he was affected by chickenpox. About one month later he had fever and a convulsive attack, and entered the Intensive Care Department of our hospital, where an ECG showed a AVB; a temporary pacemaker was applied (Cardiology Division, Monaldi Hospital) and complete amaurosis.
Neurological exam: The patient was awake, with fixed mydriasis; ocular fundus optic disk palness in both eyes.
Main examinations: Heart examination and ECG. Pacemaker rhythm 100 bpm; atrial rhythm dissociated at a 88 bpm. Echocardiogram. Normal global contractility. Pacemaker in position. Slight tricuspidal
insufficiency and slightly mitralic. Limited dyskinesias of the apical segment of the right lateral-posteral wall. Control after a month. Ophthalmological exam. In both eyes, healthy annexes, fixed mydriasi of the eye and the eye not reactive to light, transparent dioptric structures, at the ret

Evoked visual potentials. Trace morphologically irregular upon stimulation in both eyes, not repeatable and with some difficult-to-identify components.
EEG: Cerebral activity awake and during sleep was slowed, and not well modulated.
Cranial CT. No pathological signs.
T.O.R.C.H. IgM not present. Cytomegalovirus 2100 IgG, Herpes simplex 5900 IgG.
Encephalic NMR. Not performed because of the pacemaker.
Clinical course. Stationary because of amaurosis. At present there is good hemodynamic compensation.
Diagnostic hypothesis. Post-infection syndrome.
Programme:
Repeat evoked visual potentials exam after three months. Cardiological control after a month. Neurololgical control after 30 days.
Treatment: MEDROL CP 4 mg: 1 CP in the morning for three days, then suspend. ZOVIRAX SYRUP: 200 mg twice

Where have you gone so far? Its sounds like you've covered some specific Cardiac and Occular places. Have you checked wih Peds specific specialties?

What's the CC right now? If the problem is still cardiac, have you seen a Pediatric Cardiologist? Has the Fever been knocked out? If the issue is still occullar AND you feel the medical staff don't have your child's best interest, get a second opinion from another Opthalmologist from a different location.

I will admit, vision is not my best area.

G-Dspeed in your child's recovery.  (+ info)
