What kind of antibiotic would be used to treat amebiasis?

I'm doing a case study in my microbiology class and I have to figure out how a person with amebiasis would be treated, if someone could help steer me in the right direction, that'd be great.
----------

It depends on the particular species of paraistic amoeba that is causing an infection. The two primary pathogenic amoeba's are Entamoeba histolytica and Naegleria fowleri. Naegleria is almost impossible to treat and infection is almost always fatal. Entamoeba histolytica is a treatable illness. You can do a search for the organism for current treatment regimens.  (+ info)

Is it a fact that once amebiasis strikes you the bacteria never leaves your system?

Can it be ridden off with antibiotics?
----------

I have to assume you are speaking of amoebic dysentery caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It can be quite difficult to treat and there can be a relapse at a later time. A complete and effective course of antibiotics will rid your body of the organism. But, you can be re-infected. There is no conferred immunity by having it once, or more.

Eating healthy doesn't lessen your chances of getting the disease. You have to ingest the cysts of the organism before infection can be initiated. That does mean washing fruits and vegetables with clean water, drinking clean water, avoiding areas that may contain amoeba contaminated material. In some parts of the world that can be a logistical nightmare.

The other issue is that if you are now, or in the past, infected with any type of parasitic organism your chances of multi-species infection rises dramatically. Many parasitic organisms, including amoeaba, intestinal roundworms, flukes, etc inhabit the same ecological niche. Exposure to one means exposure to others.  (+ info)

Is Amebiasis infections has a permanent effect on the intestines?

I was infected by Amebiasis about 18 month ago, I was treated in the hospital and after the treatment, follow-up with a stool analysis, the result was negative.
Since that, I got a strong constipation, and I was treated also, currently, I feet that my intestines is very sensitive (specially from spices).
Is the effect of having Amebiasis is permanent or it will go after some time.
----------

your gut flora was changed due to the infection and the antibiotic treatment... sounds like it is not quite back to normal.
I would suggest that you treat yourself gently with lots and lots of yogurt and even talk to your doctor about some probiotic pills to help re-balance your gut flora. Also, for the time being, void the spicy foods that bother your gut (your body is telling you something) and increase your fiber intake (vegetable matter or otc fibers are fine) to treat your constipation as well...be sure that you are drinking lots of water every day... bottled is best if you are unsure about the purity of the water source!
you might want to look at innflam. bowel disease as well. This may be what is happening after your bout with dysentery...Sorry you are not feeling better.. the research I have seen states that only 15% of people infected will retain the cysts and have re-occuring infections. Be sure to follow up with your doctor if any of your symptoms return. Blessings.  (+ info)

in treating amebiasis which medicine is good -metronidazole or tinidazole?

I AM EAGER TO GET RID OF AMEBIASIS.
----------

Amebiasis is an infection of the intestine, liver, or other tissues by pathogenic amebas (protozoan parasites), typically by the organism Entamoeba histolytica, acquired by ingesting food or water contaminated by infected faeces. Transmission generally occurs through ingestion of cysts from food or water contaminated by faeces. All household members should have their stools examined because person to person transmission can occur. The choice of drug depends on the type of clinical presentation and the site of drug action (in the intestinal wall versus inside the intestine itself). Drugs may include metronidazole, paromomycin, iodoquinol, or diloxanide furoate. Tinidazole - Generic Name – Tinidazole; Brand Name – Tindamax - is also used for the treatment of intestinal amebiasis and amebic liver abscess caused by E. histolytica. These drugs have side effects and careful note should be taken of the manufacturer’s and your doctor’s instructions with reference to this matter.

Hope this helps

What is the prescribed diet for patients with amebiasis?

What is the prescribed diet for patients with amebiasis
----------

Here are some good tips for you -
* Restrict intake of certain foods and beverages that could worsen the condition – avoid coffee, alcohol, refined sugar, and refined foods.

* Consume anti-parasitic foods that may speed up the healing process by clearing parasites from the digestive tract - Raw garlic has anti-parasitic properties and is a good cure for other digestive problems as well. You can chew on a clove of garlic (but that's pungent!) or use it as garnish in your food. Pineapple also has the ability to clear certain parasites, as it contains the digestive enzyme bromelain. However, nothing works better at cleansing the intestines than a diet rich in fiber.

Psyllium husk, papaya extract, beetroot, pumpkin seeds, flaxseed, and bentonite clay are some highly effective intestinal cleansers. You must also strengthen your immune system by including adequate amounts of vitamin C and zinc in your diet. Spices like turmeric and cloves, and some other products like margosa, olive leaf, oregano, thyme, and barberry are also effective at getting rid of parasites in the digestive tract, and should be included in your diet.

Amebiasis from cooked rice with local water?

I am an American who now lives in Cebu, Philippines and once got amebiasis here from using 'tap water ice' in my drinks (accouding to the doc) ...now, a year later I have the same symptoms again. I have been very careful about using only bottled water, and even using it to brush my teeth...the only source I can think of is the rice we serve in our small resturant. I was wondering if the short boiling time in rice cooking is enough to kill the parasite?
----------

According to the info I read online, you have to boil water at least 5 mins to kill the parasite.  (+ info)

FOR ALL DOCTORS-- any chance of seizures in amebiasis?

is there any chance of seizures in amebiasis? coz i have a kid at my hospital who came in with complaints of fever, seizures and green, mucoid, watery foul smelling stools...some of the doctors here think it is amebiasis...but i feel tht it cud be stage 1 of TB meningitis.....which is more probable? plz help fast!!!!this is an emerency!
----------

Steadyyy,

The obvious is you have dysentery, that appears to be amebic, which would be ruled out by stool sample and treated with Metronidazole.

By now you have the seizures under control which may be fever related depending on age or electrolyte related.

The sound of hoof beats may not be zebras, but horses.

If the need for CSF crosses your mind it is always good to do it,
but cerebral amebiasis OR TB are not the most likely diagnosis in what you state here.

Treat the seizures, hydrate, get the electrolytes to normal.

Do stool sample with microscopy R/O amebiasis and treat.

Yes, amebiasis can cause seizures.

If the above is not clearly amebic dysentery with electrolyte imbalance or fever siezures now under control, do the spinal for CSF.

Do the spinal tap CSF, get the samples tested for both, and others.

Be sure to notify the lab by phone your plan to rule these out from the CSF.

Use microscopy also, and begin treatment before labs.

Lower the fever and see what you have.

Cover your bases with therapy until results are in, but seek the evidence based diagnosis.

Keep re-examining the patient, and dive into history with the family in depth as soon as you have all underway and the seizures and hydration under control.

Amebic Meningoencepalitis gains access to the CNS through the nasal mucosa, and you have what looks like GI amebic gastroenteritis/disentery, so don't jump to a gestalt diagnosis with conflicting symptoms from your patient.

Weigh your area's known incidence against the patient's age and recent history, especially swimming and food, and the diagnosis will shift out following the SOP.

I. Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis

Primary amebic meningoencephalitis is a rare, usually fatal infection of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) caused by Naegleria fowleri.

The amebas that cause this infection live in fresh, often stagnant water throughout the world. When people, usually children or young adults, swim in contaminated water, the amebas can enter the central nervous system through the mucous membranes of the nose. When they reach the brain, they cause inflammation, tissue death, and bleeding.

Symptoms begin within 1 to 2 weeks. Sometimes the first symptom is a change in smell or taste. Later, people have a headache, a stiff neck, sensitivity to light, nausea, and vomiting. They may become confused and sleepy and may have seizures. The infection can progress rapidly, causing death within 10 days.

Doctors suspect the infection in people who have symptoms and have been swimming recently in fresh water, but the diagnosis is difficult to confirm. A spinal tap (lumbar puncture) is done to obtain a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. This test can exclude other possible causes of meningitis and brain infection, but doctors are not always able to find the amebas in the sample.

Because few people survive, determining the best treatment is difficult. A few antifungal drugs and antibiotics may help. Amphotericin BSome Trade Names
FUNGIZONE
may be injected into a vein (intravenously) or into the space around the spinal canal (intrathecally). Sometimes miconazoleSome Trade Names

RIMACTANE
, or sulfisoxazoleSome Trade Names
GANTRISIN
, taken by mouth, is also given. MiconazoleSome Trade Names

may be given intrathecally.

II. Tuberculous meningitis is a very rare disorder.

Symptoms

* Seizures
* Fever
* Listlessness
* Loss of appetite
* Severe headache
* Nausea and vomiting
* Stiff neck
* Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
* Loss of consciousness

Exams and Tests

For any patient with meningitis, it is important to perform a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), where doctors take a sample of spinal fluid (known as cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF) and send it for lab tests. The following tests help diagnose tuberculous meningitis:

* CSF stain positive for mycobacterium
* CSF with high level of protein, low glucose (sugar) level, and increased number of lymphocytes
* CSF culture growing M. tuberculosis
* Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) shows CSF positive for M. tuberculosis
* Positive skin test for tuberculosis (PPD)
* Brain or meningeal biopsy showing M. tuberculosis

Treatment

Treatment involves use of several antitubercular drugs at the same time, as it does for pulmonary tuberculosis. Treatment usually lasts for at least 12 months. Systemic steroids may also be used.

----------

ya amoebiasis is curable.don`t panic.
you take the tablets regulary and continously with out fail.
because there are more chances for relapse.
you better see a specialist because it may lead to complications like hepatic amoebiasis and abscess.  (+ info)
