Does every newborn have to do tests for the inborn errors of metabolism?

I just received a letter from the inborn errors of metabolism for my son and they want certain tests done. i called the doctor that saw my son in the hospital but he didn't help me much when it came to explaining this to me. my 3 week old wont see his doctor until the 12th but has anyone else had to get tests done for their child and can someone explain what this means because im freaking out right now. thanks.

Check the links below for more information on inborn errors or metabolism. Some tests that are perfomed on infants are required by law, so it could be the doctor fulfilling what is required by law.

If it were me in your shoes, I would be relieved that the hospital and/or physicians are testing your child - it will save you a lot of heartache later on IF (if being a very big word) anything is wrong. Getting a problem diagnosed early will help with proper treatment and it will save your little one a lot of suffering, too IF (again that big word) they do find something.

Please be very calm through the whole process and consider it nothing out of the ordinary - as minor as vaccinations or a simple well baby check up.

Get with other relatives who have babies the same age or older and talk to them - it will help you through this. If you don't have anyone close by, ask about a new mother's support group in your area - talking things through with others in your same situation will really help you. New moms have a lot of concerns that a lot of times turn out to be not such a big deal and something that is very common - my wife went through this, so I understand your concerns.  (+ info)

Is Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome concidered an inborn error of metabolism?

My son has Shwachman-Diamond syndrome. His does not make ANY pancreatic enzymes needed to break down food. Our insurance company is telling us that his syndrome is not concidered an inborn error of metabolism, but some doctors are telling us that it is. I would really like any feedback on this matter.
----------

Well.... Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder . It affects many organs in the body . Not only the pancreas also bone marrow problems , skeletal abnormalities and short stature . Inborn error of metabolism comprise a large class of genetic diseases involving disorders of metabolism .The majority are due to defects of single genes . Inborn errors of metabolism are now referred to as congenital metabolic diseases or inherited metabolic diseases . Hope this information helps .  (+ info)

Amino Acid?

How much Protein is present in an Amino acid?
----------

You have yourself a bit mixed up mate.

All protein is made up of amino acids. They link up next to each other, hundreds of them, to make one protein.

There are lots of kinds of amino acids and most of the time our pody can change the ones we eat and make them into the ones we need for growth and maintainance.

But there are 9 amino acids that the body cant make and so you have to make sure you get a balance of all of these "essential amino acids". This doesnt present much of a problem because good quality protein sources such as fish, meat and eggs come with all nine.  (+ info)

Is down syndrome an inborn error of metabolism?

Please only answer this if you really understand the quetion, no offense.
----------

It is an extra copy of a chromosome, down syndrome points to which chromosome has the problem. There are other forms that affects different chromosomes. They are all considered a trisomy since there are three copies instead of the usual 2. "Trisomy" is typically followed by a number, which is the number of the affected chromosome.

The genetic code is decided by the taking half of the maternal and half the paternal gene code. If there is a problem, it is replicated in the division of cell process that happens in the embryonic stage of development. Many of the other trisomies are not compatible with life. They can live in the womb but usually pass away soon after birth. There can be a partial affect (mosaic) or it can affect all cells. The extra chromosome interferes with the normal development of the cells and systems.  (+ info)

Please point me in the direction of a good website that shows amino acid profiles of common foods ie eggs etc?

I would prefer hospital / university or sports nutrition articles, not general bodybuilding. This is for a essay on the metabolism and structure / amounts of amino acids in food.

Can you actually speed up your metabolism doing those certain exercises & eating amino acids etc?

What are the exercises & foods, do they actually work?
----------

There are a ton of different ways to increase your metabolism. Cardiovascular workouts can increase it up to thirty six hours after wards. This phenomenon is known as the "after burn". Although, this is only a short term solution. The other long term way to increase your metabolism is by gaining some muscle. Muscle burns three times as many calories as fat does. This obviously means that muscle increases your metabolism.

You should also drink a ton of water. Health professionals suggest at least eight cups a day, but I suggest over ten. Over 90% of all chemical reactions involve water. Reactions burn calories so it makes sense the more you drink the more you burn.

Another tip is to make sure you are eating enough calories daily. When your body is not getting enough energy it lowers it's metabolism. This means your body will actually gain fat during this instead of lose fat. This is called 'starvation mode".

Another good way is to always eat your breakfast no matter what! While you sleep, you are not eating. So your body still needs calories. What does your body do? It lowers its metabolism ha ha. Isn't it funny how our body works against us! So when you sleep your body's cells lower its efficiency in order to work without as much energy. So when you eat you are able to replenish these cells, and thus increasing your metabolism.

Some other ways are to increase your protein intake, eat high fiber carbs instead of "refined" carbohydrates, make sure you sleep enough, drink milk, have spicy foods, split your workouts( run in morning, lift weights in afternoon, do not drink alcohol, swim at night is an example), and finally lower your stress.

Hope I helped and good luck!!  (+ info)

Does amino acid slow down ur metabolism?

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. When you eat protein your body breaks it down into amino acids and they are used for cellular repair and other functions.

So no they do not slow your metabolism, they help it.  (+ info)

What are side effects of drinking amino acid?

Hi... I'm 5'11 and 165lbs. I not that big, just mascular anyway do you know any side effects of amino acid to out body?

I've taken whey protien before well it was ok... I'm planning to take amino acid. Wanna gain a little more mass.
----------

I would focus on Nutrition if you are looking to gain mass!!! Eat an ample amount of quality whole foods rich in proteins and carbohydrates. BCAA's are great in tissue repair!!

If you are consuming a whey product make sure it is chemical free and minus the fillers and additives! Good luck  (+ info)
