Are people with pernicious anemia pale?

If so, then how pale are they? I'm writing a book, and the main character's best friend has a severe case of pernicious anemia. I need to know so I can help describe the way the character would look.

=]
----------

Yes, they can look pale =]. However, since we are all different, the degree of pallor (i.e. paleness) differs widely.

Here is a link from NIH on pernicious anemia and how it looks -
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000569.htm

(I put extra stars next to the ones highly suspicious of pernicious anemia)

"Symptoms may include:

* Shortness of breath
* Fatigue
* Pallor***
* Rapid heart rate
* Loss of appetite
* Diarrhea
* Tingling and numbness of hands and feet***
* Sore mouth***
* Unsteady gait, especially in the dark***
* Tongue problems***
* Impaired sense of smell***
* Bleeding gums
* Positive Babinski's reflex
* Loss of deep tendon reflexes
* Personality changes, "megaloblastic madness"***

Hope that helps give a more accurate description!  (+ info)

Husband has gout and pernicious anemia. Any advice, dietary or otherwise?

Hi, my husband was diagnosed with gout about a year ago. He was advised to limit foods like shell fish, liver, and other organ meats. Last week he was diagnosed with pernicious anemia (B12 deficiency), and ideally that would mean increasing his intake of liver, organ meats, and red meat more generally. We are not sure how to maximize his B12 intake without also increasing his risk for a gout attack. Any advice?
----------

My suggestion would be- and I am not a doctor- to look into supplements and/or injections of B12. Since the foods that are high in B12 are those that will exacerbate the gout, I think that's the best treatment.  (+ info)

Could someone my age (20) have pernicious anemia?

My mom has pernicious anemia, and I have heard that it is genetic. But I believe it is more common in older people. Since I have been suffering from extreme fatigue, I'm thinking it might be possible I have it as well, but is it possible to have it at 20?
----------

yes, I had it at 26 or 27 and i had to get 12 shots in my arm over a period of a month (B12) I think it has been so long, but the shots fixed me and i've been fine ever since.
I was thin and the palms of my hands were white pale no color untilt he shots did their work.  (+ info)

Would Vit B12 injections help with fatigue in someone who does not have pernicious anemia?

Actually, yes, B-12 injections will take the fatigue edge off. You don't have to have pernicious anemia to have a low B-12 blood count and low energy.

All B vitamins, often referred to as B complex vitamins, assist and regulate carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. These are essential mechanisms which produce energy for the body. They also contribute to hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production which carries oxygen around the body. Furthermore, B complex vitamins help maintain muscle tone along the wall of the digestive tract and promote healthy skin, hair, eyes, mouth, liver and nervous system.  (+ info)

Is it true that what is now called lukaemia was known as pernicious anemia, or have they always been distinct?

Yes ok, but 70 years ago was there such a condition diagnosable as leukemia?
----------

Pernicious anemia is a blood disorder caused by a lack of vitamin B12.

Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells.

So maybe at one time some Dr's would misdiagnose one as the other. There has been separate classifications for each disease.  (+ info)

I have pernicious anemia and have not had a B12 shot in months - could this be causing my bloated stomach?

My stomach is bloated and it feels like there are lumps under the skin particularly at the top of my stomach (under breast bone - in the middle) Do these gastric problems relate to the pernicious anemia? I am also hypothyroid (on medication) have had a parathyroid tumor removed and have mild vitiligo
----------

First of all you need to get the B12 shots on a regular basis. You need to keep your hemoglobin at a healthy level. This is just as important as taking the thyroid medication. The bloated stomach sounds like you might have an ulcer. If you do and they find out you have the H. Pyloric bacterium, you can be treated with antibotics to get rid of it. Then take prilosec to heal the ulcer.
The lumps could be sebacious cysts, but you really need to see your doctor to find out. Good Luck  (+ info)

Ive just been diagnosed with B12 vitamin deficiency, pernicious anemia.?

Ive just started course of B12 injections, can anyone out there who suffers with same condition, shed some light as to how they felt after the injections. I have been feeling pretty tired and out of sorts for months and dr has hit me with this after blood tests. just interested how it has affected others as i have never come across anyone else with this condition. Thanks in advance
----------

Unfortunately this is common among vegetarians and those on low-fat diets. You need those fat soluble vitamins and the best place to find them is in animal fat (no that's not an excuse for everyone to boost their burger intake).

The main side effect of suddenly increasing your B12 intake is that you get to remember your dreams. Enjoy!  (+ info)
