why hematocrit level is increased in pernicious anemia?

The hematocrit can be increased, but is not always increased in PA.
The peripheral blood usually shows a macrocytic anemia with a mild leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. The mean cell volume (MCV) and mean cell hemoglobin (MCH) are increased, with a mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) within the reference range.  (+ info)

Pernicious anemia question? ?

I have pernicious anemia and inject myself about once a month. I did my last injection about 2.5 weeks ago and I'm already feeling really tired. I have been a bit dizzy and shaky too. I have been working very hard, like really long hours, more than usual. Would my body have used up the supply from the last shot quicker because of this? I have been burning the candle at both ends and not eating a lot. Would it be ok to give myself another shot rather than waiting another 2 weeks?
----------

Extra B12 shots are not likely to help as you should be adequately replaced. Still a good idea to check with your doctor though as it could be another form of anemia or other cause of fatigue altogether.   (+ info)

Has anyone had pernicious anemia?

40+ year old woman, can anyone describe their experiences with pernicious anemia? the effects, and especially if left untreated, found out I had it within the last year, also have gallbladder problems
----------

Well, I noticed that no one really tried to answer your question, and while I've never had pernicious anemia, I do know that it is caused by lack of B12 in your body, and that that can be the cause of gallbladder problems as well. If left untreated, you can become jaundiced, though my biggest concern would be that you would lose your sense of touch, possibly followed by loss of other senses and balance. The first loss would be your vibrational sense, and if you have a tuning fork at home you can test that pretty well on your own.

Just get someone to strike the fork, you close your eyes, and they press the base of the fork to your ankle. You say when you can feel it, then they stop the tuning fork at some point and you tell them when you feel it stop. This is supposed to test your vibrational sense, so if you can hear it or don't close your eyes, its not a test.  (+ info)

pernicious anemia?

I have been told that I have a neuropathy with no apparent cause. I see a lot of symptoms of pernicious anemia are the same symptoms that I have. Most recently my Dr has started giving me B-12 shots and I have more feeling in my feet and legs now. I am however still feeling week. Could I have a pernicious anemia? I do loose my balance and do have weakness in legs and stamina as no wear near what it had been . Just looking for some ideas. I do not have any diabities or other things that would show on a MRI. Thanks for any information you might give me
----------

Pernacious anemia is cause by low B12 so if yuor doc is giving you b12 shots and you are feeling better then more than likely that's what is wrong. Have your iron levels checked too. Alot of times if your b12 levelsare low so is your iron which will my you tired and also lower your immune system  (+ info)

I have iron-deficient anemia and the nurse told me to stop drinking so much tea (b/c tea blocks iron absorbtion), eat more greens, fish, eggs, take vitamin B12 or iron.

not sure about the other.  (+ info)

Pernicious Anemia Someone Please Help?

My mom called me tonight and told me she has fetal Pernicious Anemia can anyone tell me what is going to happen to her?
She will be giving a shot of vitamin B12 for the next 6 weeks and then they will test her again,But if its fatal can it be turned around???
----------

It's a lack of mature red blood cells. She will be very ill feeling for a time, but she should be fine.

As long as she is receiving treatment and continuing with it for as long as she is instructed, it'll be okay.  (+ info)

Pernicious anemia?

I was diagnosed 12 years ago with pernicious anemia. I recently have been diagnosied with celiac disease. Since I am on a gluten free diet now can I quit taking B-12 shots?
----------

Hi K K. Continuing with your B12 therapy may be a good idea. You may still be deficient in Intrinsic Factor (the cause of Pernicious Anemia). If you have doubts about your B12 level, your doctor can monitor your B12 status by periodically ordering tests of your Homocysteine and Methylmalonic Acid levels. Elevation of these two metabolites would indicate inadequate B12 status.

Note: high oral doses of B12 (at least 1000 micrograms/day) may be adequate to maintain your B12 levels without shots. But, if you have been diagnosed with Pernicious Anemia, I would NOT rely on oral dosing without regular metabolite monitoring as noted above.

Best wishes and good luck.  (+ info)
