In an aortic dissection the blood leaks between the layers of the vessel walls. This loss of circulating blood volume can lead to hypovolemic shock (loss of blood volume due to it being in the vessel wall).
Compression of the vena cava causes decreased venous return to the heart which causes hypovolemic shock as well.  (+ info)

Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a personal and public health catastrophe because of the high and unimproving mortality rate, increasingly long intensive care unit (ICU) stay and rising hospital costs. Criteria are needed to identify patients with a poor prognosis so that treatment and resources may be directed to those with a better outlook. This retrospective study reviews perioperative variables, outcome and length of ICU stay for 99 consecutive patients with operated ruptured infrarenal AAA between 1985 and 1992 who reached the ICU alive. Early death (within 48 h) occurred in 20 per cent using 24 ICU days and late death (after 48 h) occurred in 29 per cent using 420 ICU days; neither type of death could be predicted before operation. Multiple organ failure, the cause of 93 per cent of late deaths, was assessed for each patient 48 h after operation using an organ system failure score. There was a strong positive correlation between organ system failure score and mortality rate (P < 0.00001); all 20 patients with more than two failing organ systems died. If used in decision making the score would have saved 43 per cent of the ICU days associated with late mortality. Withdrawing postoperative treatment at an early stage in accordance with an organ system failure score may be a defensible and cost-effective option.  (+ info)

I am writing a book and in the book a horse dies of an aortic aneurysm. When the horse is about to die, will it's breaths come short and in gasps? And What are the symptoms that a horse had an aortic aneurysm?

How do you deal with an ascending aortic aneurysm?

My sister has an ascending aortic aneurysm measuring 5.3 cm. It hasn't grown over the past year. She quit smoking when it was diagnosed, but is lethargic, overweight, and suffering from anxiety. She put off surgery in order to loose weight and because the aneurysm hasn't grown. But she panics whenever she experiences an "odd" feeling. I don't know how to help her.
D...she needs this surgery 5.3 is big enough...I had mine fixed at 5.0 and I also had my aortic valve replaced at the same time. Do you guys have Bicuspid aortic valves...its a common occurence to have these 2 things together. The bicuspid foundation has a lot of info about ascending aortic aneurysms.

A valve replacement may not be actually what she is needing at the moment but many people on there had both surgeries done (like me) at the same time to save another surgery in 10 yrs time to fix the valve. It will give you both a lot of useful info to think about.

Can a ruptured brain aneurysm cause violent or aggressive behavior?

If a person suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm, can this trigger a change in their behavior? There was no violent behavior before the bleeding. After the healing process was basically over, the person became very violent and aggressive and abusive, can this be a side effect of the ruptured aneurysm?
Depends on what part of the brain the bleed is in, but the answer is definitely yes, especially if its in the frontal lobe which controls personality, but it could be anywhere. Hormones are also controlled by the brain and if the bleed is putting pressure on any area that causes an excessive excretion of adrenaline or other hormones that might make him aggressive, that would do it, too.  (+ info)

A friend of mine, on May 26, 2006, after severe headaches and hospital visits, found out after collapsing, that she had 3 aneurysms & one had burst. She had surgery the following next day. Now it is July, and she still does not talk. She will squeeze your hand on occasion and other times she does not respond at all. She is finally off the respirator and breathing on her own. Does anyone know the recovery time for a ruptured brain aneurysm? The doctor said we have to take it day by day and see.

I've been lifting weights for the past two days and I tend to hold my breath and lift (straining, I know) and I'm pretty scared an aneurysm might form. How does it form? Im onyl 12 years old.
Aneurysms are usually congenital meaning a person is born with it. They are usually not discovered until later in life. Trauma can also cause aneurysm formation.
