Aneurysm ?

My father has anerusym which we incidentally found, no symptoms.Angiogram was done and it is found that aneurysm is in the blood vessel that supplies blood to brain.He is 71yrs.Docs feel that at his age and considering the location of aneurysm, surgery or grafting is not recommended.The size of aneurysm is 4.7cm.Advice of docs is to keep the bloodpressure under control,quit smoking ( he has been a smoker for a very long tome) and get the CT scan done periodically to see if there is growth.They are not ruling out the risk in not doing the surgery,but they feel that at this time surgery might be more risky.

I am worried that the aneurysm might rupture and from what I've read ruptured aneurysm is potentially fatal. So I feel surgery is better.

Any advice ?
It is always a risk that an aneurysm may rupture, that's true. However, there is also always a risk inherent in surgery or intravascular intervention - the trick, and what doctors are trained to do, is to guess what the risk is for each and do the safer thing.
For instance (and I can't stress enough that these numbers are completely made up, I'm not a neurosurgeon and don't know the real ones, but your surgeons should) - let's say there's a 5% chance of an aneurysm of that size and location rupturing per year, but with the location and your father's age and medical history, the risk of serious morbidity or mortality from surgery is 12%, then the best thing to do would be to not do surgery and wait until either the risk of one or the other changes such that the risk of waiting becomes greater.
I know that's not the most satisfying answer in the world, but doctors have to make these decisions all the time, if you don't agree with your surgeons, you can always get another opinion, but be aware that this is the calculation being made, and that sometimes doing something is worse than doing nothing.  (+ info)

I am writing a book and in the book a horse dies of an aortic aneurysm. When the horse is about to die, will it's breaths come short and in gasps? And What are the symptoms that a horse had an aortic aneurysm?

How do you deal with an ascending aortic aneurysm?

My sister has an ascending aortic aneurysm measuring 5.3 cm. It hasn't grown over the past year. She quit smoking when it was diagnosed, but is lethargic, overweight, and suffering from anxiety. She put off surgery in order to loose weight and because the aneurysm hasn't grown. But she panics whenever she experiences an "odd" feeling. I don't know how to help her.
D...she needs this surgery 5.3 is big enough...I had mine fixed at 5.0 and I also had my aortic valve replaced at the same time. Do you guys have Bicuspid aortic valves...its a common occurence to have these 2 things together. The bicuspid foundation has a lot of info about ascending aortic aneurysms.

A valve replacement may not be actually what she is needing at the moment but many people on there had both surgeries done (like me) at the same time to save another surgery in 10 yrs time to fix the valve. It will give you both a lot of useful info to think about.

Can a ruptured brain aneurysm cause violent or aggressive behavior?

If a person suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm, can this trigger a change in their behavior? There was no violent behavior before the bleeding. After the healing process was basically over, the person became very violent and aggressive and abusive, can this be a side effect of the ruptured aneurysm?
Depends on what part of the brain the bleed is in, but the answer is definitely yes, especially if its in the frontal lobe which controls personality, but it could be anywhere. Hormones are also controlled by the brain and if the bleed is putting pressure on any area that causes an excessive excretion of adrenaline or other hormones that might make him aggressive, that would do it, too.  (+ info)

Yes. An aneurism is the ballooning of a blood vessel, and it can rupture due to a weak vessel wall.

A friend of mine, on May 26, 2006, after severe headaches and hospital visits, found out after collapsing, that she had 3 aneurysms & one had burst. She had surgery the following next day. Now it is July, and she still does not talk. She will squeeze your hand on occasion and other times she does not respond at all. She is finally off the respirator and breathing on her own. Does anyone know the recovery time for a ruptured brain aneurysm? The doctor said we have to take it day by day and see.

I did and found that in 2005 the FDA approved a treatment for your condition that in effect bypasses the weakness similar to a heart bypass. I've been lifting weights for the past two days and I tend to hold my breath and lift (straining, I know) and I'm pretty scared an aneurysm might form. How does it form? Im onyl 12 years old.
Aneurysms are usually congenital meaning a person is born with it. They are usually not discovered until later in life. Trauma can also cause aneurysm formation.

What is the difference between brain aneurysm and a stroke ?

I had a leaking brain aneurysm while my father in law had a stroke. Mine was treated with endovascular coiling and it has not caused any deficits(physical or mental) thus far. But I still don't know what should I tell if I am asked - Stroke is generally understood but many cannot relate to brain aneurysm.

There are two kinds of stroke: 1) hemorrhagic (due to bleeding) which is most often caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm, and 2) embolic (due to a clot or other blood flow blocking debris) which usually happens when a blood clot blocks an artery in the brain. In both cases, a part of the brain that was being supplied with blood from either the artery with the aneurysm or had the clot is not getting the blood (and oxygen) that it needs. As described by both previous posters, an aneurysm is a bulge in an artery where it has a weakened wall. So, an aneurysm that leaks results in a hemorrhagic stroke. So, you could say that you have had both - an aneurysm that when it leaked, caused a stroke. Most strokes are embolic. So without further information about your father, it was likely that he had an embolic stroke. Clots that cause an embolic stroke are most likely to have come from the heart or the neck (carotid artery).  (+ info)
