Can a doctor be wrong? I was diagnosed with a large angiomyolipoma?

on my kidney and had embolization performed. How sure are doctors to identity an angiomyolipoma from something worse?
Thanks.
----------

You'd think doctors can tell the difference between benign and malignant growths; if they can't plan out the appropriate steps to diagnose and treat this you might want to get a second opinion. Personally, I think you can, and should trust the opinion of your doctor. If you doubt his / her diagnosis, I can only suggest a second opinion as it's your health that can be in danger if your doctor makes an error.

I wish you all the best.  (+ info)

I recently had renal embolization done for a large angiomyolipoma?

on my left kidney. The doctor said that it will start to shrink. It has been 1 month now and I can feel almost like movement on my kidney everday. Can this be the shrinking that causes this feeling or what else could it be?
Many thanks

I was diagnosed with a angiomyolipoma on my left kidney which started?

bleeding and caused a lot of pain. The doctors said that I must undergo Embolization where a tiny catheter is inserted into a bleeding vessel and material is injected through the catheter. The material is carried by flowing blood until it lodges at the bleeding site and when enough material is in place, the flow of blood stops. Has anyone had this surgery (I hope the terms are correct) and was it painful? Many thanks
----------

There is not much pain associated with placement of the catheter from the groin. There may be some pain for a short while when injecting the clotting material. 10% of angiomyolipomas are bilateral and can involve the other kidney. This should be evaluated during the angiogram and infarction of the other kidney.  (+ info)

When should I have an Angiomyolipoma Renal Tumor removed? Now or wait?

I have a tumor that is 1.4cm. I have been told I can have it removed now or wait until it is about 3cm.

Any suggestions?

I was also told that my particular tumor is cancer.
----------

Has it been biopsied and definitely shown to be cancerous?

In any event, I would have it removed ASAP. Once it is removed, they can check more areas of the tumor for cancerous cells (while you are still in the operating room) and, if necessary, remove any adjacent lymph nodes and tissues to check for further spread.

Get it done!!! NOW !!!  (+ info)

I am 28 and was diagnosed with an angiomyolipoma on my left?

kidney after it started bleeding. Three weeks ago they did an embolization and I feel very good. Has anyone had this done and how is the long term effectiveness of this procedure? I have a follow up scan in 3 months and they said if it does not look better they would have to remove it which quite scares me.

Many thanks

Tell me what you know about angiomyolipoma in the kidney?

it is on my left kidney and 8cm in size. Does this need to be removed or not. What causes this?
----------

Renal Angiomyolipoma is a non cancerous/benign tumor on the kidney. It occurs for some reason more in women than in men. It is quite rare actually.

They can cause pain or not cause many symptoms at all. The treatment if they are small and not causing problems or bleeding, is often to wait and do another CT scan of them in a few months to see if they are growing or changing. If necessary, they can be removed in a surgical manner which is not terribly complicated and has a good recovery rate.

Now that I have read your specifics, I would say your doctor is the best one to answer that and it depends on if it is bothering you with any symptoms, bleeding or if it is just there. They tend to grow VERY slowly. But he is the one who has seen the x-rays and scans and I am sure if you ask him or her hey will tell you if they feel it needs to be removed. If they felt it was causing any real harm now I am sure you would have been scheduled for surgery and probably had it removed by now! Don't worry, just ask your doctor to tell you his opinion on it. That's what they went to medical school for after all!  (+ info)

----------

Angiomyolipoma is a benign renal neoplasm composed of fat, vascular, and smooth muscle elements. It has an incidence of about 0.3-3%. Two types are described: isolated angiomyolipoma and angiomyolipoma that is associated with tuberous sclerosis.

With advances in cross-sectional imaging, the diagnosis of renal angiomyolipoma can usually be established without surgery; most of these tumors can be managed conservatively, particularly if they are asymptomatic.

The doctor who is attending presently can guide you for surgery and hospital. Advising about surgery is not possible ove Yahoo Answers as lot of study to be done with the reports. You can find out a specialist in this line in Chennai itself and consult.

I would request you to consult Madras Madical Mission Hospital, at Muggapair where they have a Kidney treatment unit. Secondly if you are concerned about cancer best place to go is Adyar Cancer Institute and with some recommendation you can discuss with Dr. Shanta and she will be able to tell you. Best of luck for a speedy recovery of your mother. -  (+ info)
