What are typical presenting symptoms of antisocial personality disorder?

When appearing in front of a counsellor what presenting symptoms will appear in a male who suffers antisocial personality disorder?
----------

Common characteristics of people with antisocial personality disorder include:

Persistent lying or stealing
Recurring difficulties with the law
Tendency to violate the rights of others (property, physical, sexual, emotional, legal)
Aggressive, often violent behavior; prone to getting involved in fights
Inability to keep a job
A persistent agitated or depressed feeling (dysphoria)
Inability to tolerate boredom
Disregard for the safety of self or others
A childhood diagnosis of conduct disorders
Lack of remorse for hurting others
Possessing a superficial charm or wit
Impulsiveness
A sense of extreme entitlement
Inability to make or keep friends

The intensity of symptoms tends to peak during the teenage years and early 20s and then may decrease over time. It's not clear whether this is a result of aging or an increased awareness of the consequences of reckless behavior. However, though a person with antisocial personality disorder might be less likely to commit crimes later in life, that person may continue to be an inadequate spouse or parent and an unreliable employee.

Antisocial personality disorders are considered one of the most difficult of all personality disorders to treat. People who suffer from the condition rarely seek treatment on their own and may only seek therapy when directed by a court. They may abuse or neglect to take any prescribed medications. In general, there has been little success in treating people with antisocial personality disorder, but there are approaches that may help alleviate symptoms:

Medications. People with antisocial personality disorder often suffer from associative conditions such as anxiety, depression, other mood disorders and substance abuse. Doctors may prescribe antidepressant or antipsychotic medications to help alleviate these conditions. Unfortunately, many people with antisocial personality disorder don't take their medications as prescribed.

Psychotherapy. This therapy can help people with antisocial personality disorder develop appropriate interpersonal skills and instill a moral code. A critical part of this therapy is developing and maintaining a strong therapist-patient relationship. This can be challenging, as the person is often angry, emotionally unstable, interpersonally inappropriate and prone to impulsive behavior. In some cases, doctors suggest group and family therapy when individual therapy has not been successful.

In some cases, where there's a risk of self-harm or harm to others, people with antisocial personality disorder may need hospitalization and supervision at all times.  (+ info)

Since antisocial personalities are marked by a longstanding of irresponsible or unlawful behaviors that violates social norms; lying, stealing, and fighting (abusiveness) are their common behaviors. Persons with antisocial personality’s disorder often do not experience shame or remorse for their hurtful actions. Their actions are marked by indifference to the rights of others. Anyone know of an information site on Antisocial/Dissocial Personality Disorder?

I know what the disorder is, and I've read the write-up entitled "Understanding Primary Personality Disorder" by Stuart Sorensen (includes overview from the reference book: ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders) so I'm not looking for that info.

I'd like to find more information on the causes, notable research, advancements in treatment, etc.

I'm also after some write-ups about past cases, and possibly even articles written by those who were treated for the disorder.

I know there's a lot of sites out there dedicated to various disorders, so I figure it's worth a shot to see if anyone out there knows of one for this :] Thanks all.

Any books or self help stuff to do with Antisocial Personality Disorder?

Are there any good memoirs, self help books, or help anything to do with this disorder that the people on it are not a bunch of mean, biased turds that say antisocial are all incapable of loving, manipulative, murdering rapists but actual genuine ones that are trying to help?
----------

Unfortunately, you're not going to find much published dealing with antisocial personality disorder in a positive or even particularly neutral light. This is primarily because such texts don't sell, and because most individuals with antisocial personality disorder are very resistant to treatment. That said, some texts are commercially available with the intent of helping clinicians work with individuals with antisocial personality disorder. The most easily accessed of these is this:

Antisocial Personality Disorder: A Practitioner's Guide to Comparative Treatments , by Michael Maniacci.

Beyond that, consider looking for journal articles about the disorder.  (+ info)

Where can I find information regarding the neurological basis of Antisocial Personality Disorder?

In basic internet searches, all I seem to find on the topic of ASPD/Sociopathy/Psychopathy are scare pages giving markers for and advising avoidance of people with this disorder. I am not interested in pop psychology and would like to know if anyone has a link or two to some information on this disorder as it relates the the structure and development of the brain (the more in depth the better). Thanks in advance!
----------

Antisocial personality disorder is sometimes known as sociopathic personality disorder. It's also sometimes referred to as psychopathy. But some researchers believe that antisocial personality disorder and psychopathic personality are different conditions.

What is the difference between Antisocial Personality Disorder, and Psychopathy?

I would prefer a CLEAR difference between the two, please! I get confused on what the difference is.
----------

APD is a mixture of many antisocial conditions- usually caused by the environment, but it does psychopaths are counted as APD (wrongly according to Robert Hare pHD).

Psychopaths are not officially recognised as a disorder now. But they DEFINITELY exist- they are genetically and biologically made as consciousless people with very different brain structures, who WILL cause pain, normally with initial charm.

APD is people acting badly, normally regetting it and caused by society.
Psychos act badly, know no other way and don't care, and could never be any different.  (+ info)
