growing size of abdominal aortic aneurysm?

I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm of a size of 4.75 cm in a recent ultrasound test on my kidneys. How long it has been for attaining such a size?
----------

Unfortunately, your problem is very close to needing attention surgically. Other conditions are going to weigh on your doctors decision to refer you now or do watchful waiting and repeat the US IN 3-6 months.
Those are your average blood pressure readings, your platelet count, if you are on any anticoagulants (blood thinners),your blood sugar and your weight. The more obese you are, the harder it is to get accurate measurements on the aorta.

Blood pressure plays a huge roll here and I would limit any significant lifting, toting and constipation.

Hope this has helped.  (+ info)

How long would symptoms be present before a 10cm abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures?

Symptoms would include a protrusion felt in the abdomen, etc.
My grandmother had a 10cm AAA that ruptured, causing her to die. I'm just wondering how long she had symptoms before her death.
----------

It varies. Some patients don't know they have one until right before it begins to leak. The pain, wherever it presents, is pretty bad. Once it starts, the patient doesn't have long to get into surgery.

A few patients may have fairly minor discomfort for a few days before rupture.

Sorry about your grandmother. Her children need to be watched closely for an aneurysm. Starting at age 50, they should get periodic screening ultrasounds.  (+ info)

How much does it cost to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm + a week recovery in the hospital? In California.

Thank you in advance for those who don't leave nonsensical answers.

Depending on the hospital, probably $25,000-$30,000.  (+ info)

Can a person have pain with an abdominal aortic aneurysm other than when one is about to rupture?

I have an AAA that a CT scan in Feb 09 showed to be 4.8 cm. I have an appointment with my vascular surgeon July 29, 2009, at which time he said surgical repair will most likely be necessary. In the past few days, I have been having sharp pain to the left of my navel and pains going down my legs. My feet hurt when I am lying down.
----------

It's a good idea to get checked. You can get pain if the lining of the aneurysm begins to tear (dissect) without rupture.

Hopefully, it's something fairly benign.  (+ info)

Intense pulse in lower left abdomen / left side, abdominal aortic aneurysm?

Recently I was lying in bed and I could feel my pulse really strong in the lower left abdomen / left side. It felt like my whole descending colon was pulsing with my heart beat and I could feel the sensation in my other organs. It was a lot stronger than even a fast heart beat. It lasted a few minutes.

Is it normal or could it have been an abdominal aortic aneurysm?
----------

If you are thin, like me, and usually have a strong pulse or a rapid pulse at times, you can normally feel pulsing in your adbdominal aorta after exercising or with a rapid heart beat. Are you a medical student? You sound like you have a lil hypochondriasis. An AAA is usually a silent situation, without symptoms, until it ruptures of course, if ever. It is likely you had muscle spasms, or something going on with ur colon. You can always ask your doctor to check it out, but they will roll their eyes at you probably.

If you have none of these risk factors, you don't have one:

High blood pressure
Being overweight or obesity
Smoking
High cholesterol
Emphysema

Also, since your symptoms were temporary, probably not!  (+ info)

I'm 28 years old with an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

I just found out that I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm and I am scared. I did research on it and found that people don't get it until their 60s. Why do I have it so young and will I die?
----------

It is extremely rare for someone to be diagnosed with a AAA at your age. I am curious how it was discovered. The biggest concern with AAA is that they can rupture and this is associated with a very high mortality rate. The risk of AAA rupture is increased by increasing aneurysm size and fast enlargement rate. The good news is that we can intervene prior to rupture with pretty good results now a days. This can be done with open surgery or by working directly in the vessels (endovascular). The decision to intervene is based on the size of the aneurysm and how fast it is enlarging. This should be discussed with your doctor.

It is hard to say why you developed this at such a young age. Common risk factors for AAA include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history, and smoking. I don't know if you have any of these risk factors. Sometimes also people can have abnormalities in their blood vessels that could lead to this at a younger age. I hope this helps. Good luck to you.  (+ info)

Not very likely. If you have a family history and are a heavy smoker, your risk would be significant. But,otherwise, it is very low.  (+ info)

Anyone young ever had or know sum1 young who had an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

I was just curious. I am a 30 year old female, and my dr just sent me for a ct scan yesterday to see if I have one. She felt a "pounding pulsation" in my stomach. And my stomach has been hurting alot. I did some research, and I found that an AAA normally occurs in older men. I'm waiting anxiously on my test results.

I knew a woman who had one diagnosed at 28, it ruptured when she was 33.  (+ info)

Can ultrasound miss detecting abdominal aortic aneurysm?

or other related conditions?
----------

The sensitivity of ultrasound for AAA is greater than 99%. Less than 1% of AAAs are missed. Ultrasound is the gold standard for AAA screening. Yes, a very small number are missed. The vast majority would be smaller than a clinically significant 4.0 cm dilatation requiring followup.

Contrast (CT scan) is NOT the recommended screen because 1)it is more expensive 2)it has potential for allergic reaction 3)there is radiation exposure 4)it does not improve diagnosis over inexpensive, noninvasive ultrasound.

My answer is based on a recent issue of Consultant medical journal and verification of these facfts with my ER doc spouse.

Here is a link to the screening guidelines for abdominal aortic aneurysm. It also lists the Consultant reference article.

Yikes! As for the recommendation to get a physical exam, 20% of AAAs 4.0 cm and larger are missed. That's dangerous and medically inaccurate advice. Get the ultrasound.  (+ info)
