What cause Atrioventricular Septal Defect?

Recently, my new born baby has discover with Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD). What cause this happen to her?

She need to go operation so that can repair the hole & let it flow normal. Does it has chance to re-operation again for this illness?

Anyone can help?
----------

I had an atrioventricular septal defect, actually, I had what's called 'single ventricle'. It took 3 surgeries to repair my heart, but it's doing fine now.
AVSD doesn't have any known cause. It is just a fluke. There is always a chance that more than one surgery will be needed, it depends on the specific defect, the growth of the baby and other things.
If you want to talk more about it, please e-mail me.  (+ info)

Congenital Heart, Atrial Septal Defect. Has anyone had sufficient results from the Amplatzer Occluder?

Atrial Septal Defect is a Congenital Heart Defect. A hole between the two upper chambers. I'm a 47 year old male in good physical condition that was just recently diagnosed. The Amplatzer Occluder is a stent like devise that is inserted into the groin area and delivered to the heart chambers where it opens up like an "umbrella on one side and the the other itself to fill in the hole and close.

ironically i just got this done 2 days ago and i am at home feeling fine. I am eighteen years old and have bounced back well so far.. if you want to keep in touch i can let you know how long it takes for me to start working out again. the hole in my heart was moderately large.. about an inch big, and it is all closed up now. my groin is quite sore but that will go away in about a week. I am so glad they didn't go ahead with open heart.  (+ info)

Is atrial septal defect the same thing as patent ductus arteriosus?

The description sounds the same to me. I'm trying to get into the military and they'll make an exception for patent ductus arteriosus. I was diagnosed with atrial septal defect and they sound like the same thing.

Are they?
----------

No, they are not the same.
If it hasn't bothered you so far in life why not talk to a recruiter?
An ASD may be so small that it doesn’t need treatment.  (+ info)

i want to know how the future holds for a child with down syndrome and ventricular septal defect ?

I got a daughther who has down syndrome with vsd(ventricular septal defect). She is 5 years old april 23,2006.Her weight is only 13 KG.She has a very high problem of breathing specially at night. The thing that I wanted to be clear is what I possibly expect in the future.I am for example worried about her weight. She looks like a 2 years old.
----------

Many children with Down's Syndrome have heart problems and ventricular septal defect is one of the commonest heart defects in all children. Often the hole will close on its own but as your daughter is five this obviously hasn't happened. If a child with this problem is not putting on weight they can be given high calorie food and feed through a nasal gastric tube. This defect can be operated on. Has this been suggested? Success rates are as high as 99% in some hospitals.  (+ info)

Explain how septal defect testing works?

I'm about to have a septal defect testing (where they stick a tube down your throat) and I was wondering if anyone has personal experiences that they would like to share.

Explain how it's done, what you thought of it, or any other details you would like to include.

Thanks!

You are a little confused. First what you have described in an esophageal echocardiogram. It is essentially an ultrasound where the probe is inside your esophagus rather than the outside of your body. It offers a less obstructed "window" from a different position so that new information could be gathered.

One of the things that any echocardiogram may be looking at is a "septal defect". A septal defect merely means that the there is a hole between two chambers of the heart that is not suppose to be there. Depending on the details (where, how big, what are the flow and pressure characteristics), it can be anywhere from a no big deal and don't worry about it, or you are in it deep and may die soon.

As for the testing, they usually lightly sedate you. You may or may not remember any part about it. The worst part is the gagging reflex as they put this rather large probe down your throat.  (+ info)

How bad is an atrial septal defect that is 3.4 centimeters in a 32 year old man?

Please do not convert centimeters to inches because I already know how big the hole is
----------

Well, that's a fairly big ASD. And the person is an adult - they won't grow anymore so the chance for the ASD to close on its own has passed. And because of the hole, he's Cyanotic - skin tinged slightly blue, has no stamina, and tires easily.

The good news is that it can be fixed. The bad news is the only way to fix it is open heart surgery. Heart Surgery isn't as bad as it used to be - in about the same time as summer break, you'll be over it, feeling better... and no more Cyanosis!  (+ info)

Can an interventricular septal defect automatically cause overriding of the aorta?

interventricular septal defect doesn't cause overriding of the aorta but it may be associated with it in some cases  (+ info)

What are the vital signs for a ventricular septal defect?

What are some of the vital signs (i.e., blood pressure...) that come along with a ventricular septal defect?

Thanks
----------

to answer this question i would need to know the child's age. the only vital sign that can be not "normal" would;d be his oxygen saturation's. most people are 97-100% and children with VSD can have sats go as low as the mid 70% its their "normal" because of the hole in their heart they are able to have un oxygenated blood move in to the left ventricle and go to the rest of the body. i hope i explained this okay if you have any questions email at [email protected] I am a cardiac ICU nurse at my local children's hospital   (+ info)

Is an Atrial Septal Defect repair surgery dangerous and risky?

Any cardiac surgery is dangerous and risky. Unfortunately they're almost all NECESSARY! As surgeries go, ASD repairs are apparently some of the easier defects to fix.  (+ info)

my nice was diagnosed with both atrial septal defect and forearm patent ovale?

what is this and what r the differences, risk while pregnant if any?

What is an atrial septal defect (ASD)?

As the name implies, an atrial septal defect is a defect or hole in the muscular wall (the septum) that separates the right and left atria- 2 of the 4 chambers of the heart.

Before birth, the heart starts out as a single tube which differentiates into 4 chambers during embryological development. Abnormalities can arise at several steps in the process, resulting in a hole (defect) in the final septa that normally separate the heart into right and left atria and ventricles. This causes abnormal blood flow in the heart with varying effects on the dog, depending on the size and location of the defect.

Patent Foramen Ovale is not a disease, but only a remains of the anatomy of the Foramen
This involves the placement of an infusion catheter in a forearm vein.A forearm handgrip for a rifle, comprising a pair of essentially identical semi-oval mating half-grip pieces.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an established cause of stroke in young patients without other determined etiologies (ie, cryptogenic stroke). The additional presence of atrial septum aneurysm (ASA) possibly increases stroke risk, but it remains undetermined which factors best predict thromboembolism in patients with PFO. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) may help to distinguish the characteristics of cerebral embolism associated with different features of the interatrial septum in PFO stroke.

Take care always  (+ info)
