Can aphasia and down's syndrom be ANY way related?

As you may already know, Down Syndrome may come with many other medical problems. Language impairments are almost always a part of the Down syndrome diagnosis, which is a result of delayed cognitive ability. Asphasia, on the other hand, is caused by a lesion in the brain, or the result of some other medical cause, such as a brain hemmorage, or stroke. So it's hard to say given the lack of medical history (and the fact that I'm not a doctor!), but it could be either related or a coincidence. Best wishes.  (+ info)

Aphasia or drug overdose?

What is aphasia? Can a person with aphasia lose her ability to speak for two days and then the ability to speak returns after two days? Can an overdose of psychotropic drugs immitate the symptoms of aphasia? I prefer a nurse or doctor or psychiatrist answer this question. Thank you.
----------

Aphasia is an acquired language problem caused by damage to the brain in the hemisphere responsible for communication. A stroke is the most common cause of Aphasia, but any disease or injury that affects the language areas of the brain can result in Aphasia.

Some people may recover completely from Aphasia while others may have permanent speech and language difficulties of varying degree.

It is possible that an overdose of psychotropic drugs can imitate the symptoms of aphasia.

I hope this information helps.

Best wishes.  (+ info)

father has aphasia and my mom is overwhelmed?

She needs help and support. She needs people to talk to and perhaps some other help. A social worker in a hospital may have ideas of resources in your area. Think of seeing this person.  (+ info)

I suffer aphasia brought on from stroke. I'm wondering in hynosis would work?

I hope you have had or receiving speech therapy. My husband had stroke and aphasia and we learned some tricks. Talk with you hands. Makes both sides of the brain work. Use pictures if you need until the new pathways are established. Think around the words you cannot "catch." No one, therapist or rehab doctor, mentioned the use of hypnosis. Good luck!  (+ info)

Broca’s area or Wernicke’s area?

After a car accident the person is having trouble speaking and understanding what others are saying. What area(s) of the brain were likely damaged to produce such results? Is it can be just Broca's or Wernicke's area...or both?
----------

Broca's area is responsible for the actual pronunciation of words so someone with damage to Broca's area can usually understand what is being said to them, but they will have trouble expressing what they want to say. Someone with Wernicke's aphasia will have trouble understanding what others say to them, and those affected will therefore have trouble expressing themselves as well.

*Wernicke's aphasia is not actually caused by damage to Wernicke's area.  (+ info)

Online community for people with Aphasia.?

My firend's father has aphasia after stroke, he trying to find online community like forum or something where he can talk with other aphasic people. Is there any?
----------

Actually, there is a Yahoo! group called "aphasia." There is also a group based in NYC that has an online forum: http://www.aphasianyc.org/anyc/

I know that you are looking for an online group for him, but I also wanted to let you know that the National Aphasia Association has a listing of support groups on our website. It may help for him to find a support group that is nearby so that he can talk with others about aphasia as well as get out and about. Most of these support groups are led by Speech Language Pathologists, Social Workers, Caregivers and/or Persons with Aphasia. The link is: http://www.aphasia.org/aphasia_community/aphasia_community_groups.html

I hope this helps!  (+ info)

How do you become smart again after Depression?

Does Aphasia happen to victims of depression? My thinking sucks, my vocabulary sucks, I do not comprehend things as fast as others anymore. I am not depressed anymore but, I am having difficulty with my cognitive abilities.
----------

Hobbies that you enjoy that involve thinking and learning new things are good for this, especially if you have something that you were into before you were depressed. When I was a little kid I liked to build things, as I got older I got so wrapped up in school and friends that I didn't do that anymore. I went through a time of being depressed and when I came out of it I found that it was helpful to engage myself in projects to get my brain rolling again.  (+ info)

What can I expect at first visit with a speech pathologist?

Seeing a speech pathologist tomorrow, first time ever. I self-referred b/c I do believe I may have aphasia. What can I expect? How long should I expect to be there?
----------

The SLP will do an evaluation. This will include talking to you about your concerns and maybe doing some testing with your speech. The SLP might look inside your mouth to see if you have any structural abnormalities. Treatment should be recommended and any diagnosis may be made at this time. It should take about an hour. Good luck!  (+ info)
