Do you have a child with Apraxia?

My son will be 4 in July and has Apraxia. Depending on the area of speech, he is 6-12 months delayed. I am putting him in prescool at the school he will attend next year for kindergarten. I am very scared but he is excited. I am scared no one will understand him but everyone keeps telling me it will probably help him. Anyone have this experience?

My nephew has a minor speech delay between the 2 languages that he speaks. As a 4yr old his speech level was about 4-9 months delayed. He started to go to a step up program and it helped him emmensely. Now it's been a full school year and he's almost to the same level as other kids his age. I don't know if this helps or even if it's the same thing. I've never heard the term Apraxia  (+ info)

Anybody's children have developemental apraxia?

Also known as Childhood Apraxia of Speech, my 2 1/2 year old recently diagnosed. How is your older child doing now? Can they speak clearly? Help!
----------

If your child is suffering from that, you may want to ask a real doctor at a hospital because you seem to have an emergency by saying 'help.'

Anyone have a child with apraxia?

my 2.5 year old has been is speech therapy for about 3 months for low muscle tone of his mouth. I wonder if he has apraxia but his st said he is to young to dx with apraxia. He has one major sympton like saying a word and then not saying it for while, then it may pop out again. He also still drools, esp when he is concentrating on something, can't blow bubbles yet or pucker very good but he is making wonderful progress.

My cousin had apraxia and was diagnosed around Age 3 or 4. Every one thought he had autism. He had several years of speech therapy and he is now 8 years old, goes to a normal school, is in normal classes, and talks normal. He sometimes slurs his words but I think that's due to him being lazy about speaking or too excited to calm down and say them properly. Good luck!  (+ info)

my daughter was diagnosed with apraxia, what can i expect from speech therapy? ?

will speech therapy help significantly? will she learn to talk on her own if i don't do speech therapy? she's 28 months old
----------

To be honest it depends on the severity. Both of my kids had this in some form. My oldest started speech therapy when he was 3. I was clueless and just thought he talked funny, but by the time he was 5 he was fine. My youngest has dsypraxia so he did everything backwards from writing to getting dressed. He started in speech at 3 as well but didn't finish until he was 6 1/2. The funny thing is though in my opinion his speech was no where near as bad as his brothers.

Both of my kids learned to talk on their own. The thing is they kind of have their own language. They understand it and you will probably understand it too, but no one else will. My oldest used to call "Milk" "Book". Looking back at old video tapes I don't know how we did it. My kids are now 21 and 18.

If you live in the US your child is entitled to free speech therapy through the public school system starting at age 3. Just contact the special needs department.  (+ info)

my child 4yr old has been diagnosed w/ (verbal Apraxia) does he REALLY need Speech Therapy ?

My 4yr old has been diagnosed w/ verbal Apraxia, he is the only child, we are bilingual; the Dr. suggested speech therapy but he's never been in daycare. Do You think just enrolling him in Daycare will help him or Is Speech therapy really necessary? I REALLY can't afford both. But I will do anything that's necessary for him.
----------

If you live in America then why don't you have her evaluated for Early Childhood Intervention. It's free for kids who qualify. Not only will the Speech Therapy be free but she may even qualify for the free preschool program too. The setup is different in different communities. You can start by calling the Spec Ed department of your local public school district. You'll find their number in the Yellow Pages phone book. If they don't evaluate preschoolers then they'll give you the contact phone number who does.  (+ info)

how can I tell if my son who is 21 months old has apraxia of speech?

21 months old is young to be diagnosed with apraxia of speech. It is not too young, however, to be diagnosed with other speech and language "issues". I am guessing that your son is not talking. I would get an evaluation from a licensed speech language pathologist. The evaluation will look at receptive language (how well your son understands us), expressive language (how well you son is able to communicate out his wants and needs). You can look at ASHA (american speech and hearing association) on the web at asha.org. They will have a list of the developmental norms and you should be able to find a therapist close to you. Good Luck.  (+ info)

Does anyone know if SSI considers Apraxia a disability?

I am not sure if you are an adult or a child so I will include information for both. Both SSI and SSD use specific guidelines for determining a disability, and they are called "The Listings." Following are links to the listings, and here you can see what the SSA considers as a disability. It is a good idea to print out the section of the listings that pertain to your disability when applying for SSI and/or SSD and give copies to your doctors, social workers, etc. so they can zero in on what the SSA will be looking for.

Adult listings.

Does a 13yo. who pronounces r as v have Apraxia of Speech?

For instance, he pronounces rock as vock.
----------

sounds more like a speech impedement than apraxia. PPl w/ apraxia know what theyre trying to say,but it usually comes out more like slur or a mumble. The nerve from the brain to the tongue messes the word up.

good luck  (+ info)

Does anybody know about mild Apraxia affecting kids speaking ability ?

My son has been diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech. It is a neurological disorder. The signals from the brain get mixed up when they reach the mouth. There is nothing wrong with the brain or the mouth, it is just the signal.
This disability cannot be outgrown and must be treated with speech therapy. There is no quick fix.
My son is 23 mos and is almost completely nonverbal. He was diagnosed at 20 mos old. Before he started therapy, his only sounds were "di" which he used for everything. After 3 mos of therapy he can now say go, which sounds like "doh" and bye-bye.
An excellent book is The Late Talker...one of the authors is Marilyn Agin, who is a doctor known for her work with Apraxia. The bottom website has recordings of children with Apraxia which might be helpful. The recordings range from mild to severe.  (+ info)
