Could arm injuries result in something more serious?

If something was to happen to the arm that resulted in heavy damage, like a broken bone, cut veins and muscles, or something similar, could that result in partial or complete loss of movement in the arm and hand?
----------

yes. permanent nerve damage is possible. so is paralysis. it depends on the injury.  (+ info)

----------

Hi Kenzie, please consult a licensed Physician in any hospital or medical facility near your house. Chances are there might be damage to your nerves, veins or muscles. Best option would be to consult a Doctor and have your arm checked e.g. Blood exam and X-ray.  (+ info)

How long would you have to stay in the hospital with a broken arm and concussion?

Im writing a story in which a girl gets in a car accident, and breaks her arm and gets a concussion. I want my story to be realistic, so does anyone know about how long you would have to stay in the hospital with those injuries?

Dull aching pain in upper left arm and neck?

I'm 22 years old with no past heart problems. Heart disease does run in my family. For the past few hours I have had a dull aching pain in my upper left arm going into my shoulder and neck. No chest pains or heart burn. Should I be concerned? Also, there have been no injuries or pulled muscles...Does anyone know what this could be?
----------

Probably an trigger point that needs to be massaged using acupressure. Poor posture & RSI can cause these pains. find the sore acupressure / trigger points & press on them a 10-30 seconds with a round object.  (+ info)

How does a prosthetic arm and hand work?

Watching the horrific injuries to the soldiers in Iraq and the rehab they have to go through, I wonder how those prosthetic arms and hands turn and move an grasp. Thanks for your help.
----------

One kind of artificial arm, for example, ends in a pair of hooks rather than a hand. The other end is attached to the remaining portion of the patient's arm, and then to a harness that straps over the shoulders.

By moving the shoulder, the patient can pull on the harness, which in turn pulls on flexible cables to open and close the hooks, allowing the person to grasp objects. There is no sense of touch in this type of prosthesis, so the user has to watch closely what he or she is doing.

Dynamic prostheses, on the other hand, use sophisticated electronics. They can do this because the nerve and muscle systems in the human body are electrical. For example, an amputee with a myoelectric arm tenses his or her remaining arm muscle.

Sensors detect this muscle electricity (myoelectricity) and transmit the signal to the artificial hand, powered by batteries, which then opens or closes.

Signals also can go from the environment to the patient, allowing an approximation of the sense of touch. For example, some prosthetic hands have sensors that can detect heat or cold and transmit that information to electrodes on the patient's skin.

Researchers are still improving prostheses. New materials allow artificial feet to press and spring on the ground very much like a real foot.

One type of artificial foot transmits electronic information about pressure to amputees, allowing them to balance because they can tell whether their weight is on the toes, heels, or sides of the feet.  (+ info)

How serious is vein injuries and how long will take to heal?

I fall and hit the ground sideways, and the impact is somewhere around my wrist and my arm. I didnt feel anything in the first day and i thought it was fine. later, on the second day, i can feel my veins hurting. this feeling is like waves; sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesnt. later this hurting is getting more frequent, but as long as i dunt move my arm everything is fine.

you might twisted ur wrist and the vein over there  (+ info)

How would you treat these injuries yourself if you didn't have medical training?

How would you Treat and Permanently Fix these injuries if for whatever reason you didn't seek medical help.
1. Gunshot wound to Leg/Arm
2. Stab wound to Leg/Arm
3. Broken Leg/Arm
4. Broken Finger
5. Burnt Arm/Leg from Fire
----------

Common sense. If it's bleeding, stop the bleeding. If it's broken, break it back into place.

A gunshot can't really be "fixed" without trained medical help since they'd have to not only extract the bullet if it didn't go all the way through, but give you antibiotics to fight off bacteria building up in your exposed wound.

Breaks maybe, gunshots and stab wounds, not likely?  (+ info)

How to get a cast on your arm or wrist?

Is it possible to get a cast without fracturing your arm or paying large amounts of money to a doctor?

What kind of other injuries need casts? Like on arms or wrists?

Thank You
----------

Why on earth would you want to fake an injury?

You can make a cast by buying plaster and bandage strips. But that can cause harm because lack of using your arm can give you problems. Also, how would you get it off? People would also wonder about a plaster cast these days when fiberglass is the norm.

Pretending to hurt is offensive to those who are really hurt.

Figure out something useful to do with your life. Why don't you volunteer to work with the disabled. It will help you in so many ways.

Comment to other answerer: No competent doctor will give you a cast just because. If they don't see a fracture, the wrist isn't swollen, they aren't going to put on a cast without an x-ray showing need. That's ridiculous.  (+ info)

Difference between arm sling and elevation sling?

Hi. I was wondering, what is the difference between an arm sling and an elevation sling?

I understand that they are for different injuries; forearm fractures for example should be supported with an arm sling, while collar bone fractures should be supported with an elevation sling. However, what is the logic behind this
----------

An arm sling, is a sling that just allows support for the limb, where the arm lays next to the body, an elevation sling is for a badly broken or fractured shoulder or arm injury, where the sling is stiffened and the arm sticks out away from the body.Usually the sling is supported by metal posts.  (+ info)
