Can pregnancy aggravate arthritis?

About a year and a half ago, I got reactive arthritis in my knee from a salmonella infection. The pain and swelling went away with anti-inflammatory treatments and physical therapy, and I had been completely symptom free for the past 7 or 8 months. I am now 9 weeks pregnant, and the knee is starting to bug me again. Could it be related to the pregnancy?

What is the correlation between reactive airway disease and pneumonia?

My daughter has an exclusionary rider for reactive airway and we are being denied coverage for both a couple of office visits and ER visit for pneumonia. Never did the doctor say her reactive airway (which she has only had once....two years ago!!) was related to the pneumonia.
----------

There is no correlation except pneumonia can exacerbate her reactive airway disease. But, not every time she got reactive airway the cause would be pneumonia. The cause can be varied.  (+ info)

What is the difference between arthritis medicines Mobic and Celebrex?

I take 200 mg Celebrex every day for arthritis. My RN friend says she takes Mobic 15 mg and it is the only arthritis medicine her hospital prescribes since it is safer and works better than Celebrex. I want to know why it is safer and what, if any, are the side effects?
----------

About celebrex: It is true that it is slightly better for the stomach (GI tract in general) and it does not have the detrimental side effects (increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality) that vioxx and bextra had.
Mobic is a less specific COX-2 inhibitor and has never been shown to be any better than celebrex.
As mobic is not generic it is as expensive as celebrex.
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to celebrex, I would recommend Etodolac as it is generic and overall better tolerated than ibuprofen or naprosyn.
From a personal standpoint: my mother tolerated celebrex ok but had severe stomach problems with mobic. As always YMMV.
Disclaimer: I am not a paid consultant for any of these companies and have no direct financial interest in them.  (+ info)

What are the signs of arthritis and is it preventable?

I had a serious wreck 10yrs ago and fractured my hip in several places and had to have major surgery. The doctor told me that I would be more suceptable to arthritis. I am now 32 and have been having for the last few yrs or so pain in my arms and legs but only at night when I am trying to sleep. Could this be the onset of arthritis? What are the signs? Thanks!
----------

One of the signs of arthritis is when one has pain when they know the weather is going to change such as when it rains. Stiffness such as during cold weather can also be a symptom of arthritis. Some people notice their pain worse during the day and others at night too. This can often tie in to the weather as well. Sometimes swelling and redness can be symptoms of arthritis.

As to how to prevent it once it starts the only thing that can be done is to minimize the amount of pain thru medication and other forms of treatment and sometimes exercise.

Sometimes pain in the muscles can be a sign of arthritis too. When I first started out I didn't have the classic symptoms of arthritis. My problem was muscle pain in my thigh area. Whenever my arthritis acts up and I know it's going to be a bad flare I will often feel it in my thigh first and one way I'll know it is when I start to feel a burning sensation in that area and then the pain comes next.

How bad does my arthritis have to get before I can claim disability?

I have osteoarthritis in my neck, lower back, wrists and ankles. I take prescription anti inflamitories and muscle relaxers in order to go to work. I work 10 hrs a day on my feet constantly moving, stretching and bending. While this movement is good for my arthritis, it can get really painful by the end of the day. I feel like I am up a creek without a paddle most of the time, especially after a 3 day workout. Then I just totally crash. I am tired of waking up with swollen hands, having a crick in my back and limping for a while after sitting down for 30 minutes.

yes speak with ur doctor,,,or a good doctor.Every state has different laws in regards to disability..Every lawyer wants u on disability,,thats how the disability lawyers get paid,,and they can streach it out 4 years,,,the longer they streach it the more of the back pay they owe u,,they get...plus the system is sooo screwed,,people get on it that dont need it and then they get jobs under the table,,proving that they can work..
If u need on disability,,find out what doctors works with what lawyers....The two have to have a Very good realationship...request for specialist and leave a good paper trail in regards of ur problem,,,ur state will be looking at the trail more than what u say...u need a good family doctor and several specialist that are willing to work together,,,good luck.  (+ info)

I have psoriatic arthritis and take prednisolone. What are the long term effects of taking prednisolone?

I am slightly concerned about long term use of the drug prednisolone, prescribed for arthritis. Also how my condition may develop in future. I have psoriatic arthritis.
----------

The longer you take it and the higher the dose generally the more side effects.
Fluid weight gain can be a problem around the stomach, back of neck and rounding of the face.
It can make your skin thinner - hence bruise easier.
Also can deplete bone density - more of a concern for women.
Can also make you very awake, kind of hyper feeling.
It is a widely used drug, and not much negative feedback.  (+ info)

What natural remedies are good for arthritis?

I have inflamatory oesteo arthritis and it is very painful. Any suggestions for some natural remedies?
----------

I'm not sure where you are from, but here in Canada they have an all natural medicine called "Lakota." It has been a best-seller for years and years here. I tried Glucosamine but it did nothing for myself, personally. Within 2 days of going on Lakota "Rheumatoid Formula" I was virtually pain-free, it was unbelievable. I stopped taking it the past few weeks to see if it really was the Lakota that was making a difference, and the pain has returned so I am going back out to purchase some more at the local drugstore. If you are a non-Canadian resident, I would still ask your local Pharmacist and check out their website. I know how terrible it is to have an auto-immune disease, especially on a bad flare-up day, and I wish you nothing but the best of luck and best of health.  (+ info)

How long does frozen shoulder & rheumatied arthritis take to heel?

I have been suffering from frozen shoulder since the last 3 years & rheumatoid arthritis from 1 year back. How long will it take for me to get cured?
----------

Well, there is no cure for arthritis, so treatment is typically focused on keeping it from getting worse.

However, exercise and diet can be a very effective way to help mitigate the effects of the disease. Make sure to check with your doctor first and ask them about what types of foods and exercises are safe, but generally low impact exercises work very well with those who have arthritis.

This includes things like water aerobics, walking, and yoga, all of which can help strengthen the muscles and reduce joint pain, without making the disease worse. Exercises to avoid are ones like running, which put a lot of shock on the joints.  (+ info)
