What is the difference in arthritis & rheumatoid arthritis?

I believe i understand about Arthritis, but any help would be appreciated.
----------

Arthritis is wear and tare on the joints, almost anyone can suffer with it to some degree.
But Rheumatoid Arthritis is Hereditary usually more women than men are affected by it and it also affects other organs in the body.....its not just wear and tare, the body actually starts to attack itself, the bones kinda become diseased and they crumble or get eaten away at plus you also get deposits on bone surface that cause disfigurement.

Is morphine ever prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis?

Someone I know says she's on morphine for rheumatoid arthritis. I think she's lying and just has a drug problem. She does physical labour, which doesn't make sense if the pain was that bad. She does miss a lot of work days. She says she's trying to quit the morphine but hasn't seen a doctor about this. I would like to hear opinions especially from doctors and nurses. Thanks.
I meant she's not getting a doctor's help about quitting. She claims the morphine was prescribed.

I have had RA for 23 years and I have NEVER heard of moriphine being give for that. The only time I have been given that is when I went under for a double hip and double knee replacement and even then they only allowed me on it for 2 days because of possible addiction. If she hasnt seen a doctor then how is she getting it? Usually people with RA take anti-inflammatories to control their diesease and occasionally be given motrin 800 or something like that if they need something more. I think it sounds like your friend may have a drug habit.  (+ info)

How can I convince that I have rheumatoid arthritis to my rheumatoligist?

I do have arthritis but not sure if it is that severe. I feel like I have it but seems these days doctors don't believe people anymore. And also what about fibromilagia? I am sure I have it but how can I convince my doctor?
I am 37 years old.
----------

If I understood right you suffer from pain in your joints but your doctor does not find any pathologic signs during clinical examination nor any laboratory discrepancies. If that's the case I would ask for an ultrasound examination of the affected joints. This way you will see if there's arthritis, tenosynovitis or some other pathology in the region, above that you can quantify the degree of inflammation (if any). Let us know what happened!  (+ info)

Has anyone heard of chemo being used to treat rheumatoid arthritis?

I'd be most appreciative to hear from anyone who has undergone chemo recently as part of their treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and if the results were worth the experience.
----------

Refractory rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be treated with chemotherapy. Cyclophosphamide and other agents have been used in past. There has been research on the use of high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplant for life-threatening cases. Rituximab, a monoclonal antibody against CD20, a protein on the surface of B-lymphocytes, has been used successfully in the treatment of RA. By definition, many of the patients receiving these drugs are having a very difficult time with RA, and unfortunately most will not respond well or for long. I have treated a few patients (as an oncologist for their rheumatologist), and have had some success, some failure. Rituximab is well-tolerated after the first dose infusion reactions are over.

God bless, best wishes  (+ info)

What kind of exercises is good for people with rheumatoid arthritis?

I have Rheumatoid Arthuritis and I want to excercise to help my joints and to lose some weight. Anyone here know of any good prgrams to get involved in that I won't suffer from for days after doing it?
----------

Swimming, walking and you can walk in your house. I bought Leslie Sansone Walk for Life tapes and I love them. You can start out slow with 1 mile and build up to a fast 5 miles. Check her out on line. Also maybe pilates and yoga. I'm sure if you go on line for these they will have ones that are for beginners and for people that have some things wrong with them. Give it a shot and just stop if it hurts. Good luck and you will feel better if you exercise.  (+ info)

Is there anyone who is suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis, and being treated with Embrol Injections?

Are you having Embrol for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis? I am very interested in hearing from anyone on this treatment, and how it affects them.
I have been on the treatment for 4 weeks now, and feel that itis not working for me.
I look forword to hearing from others on this treatment.
----------

Hi, so sorry to hear you have RA, I don't have this illness, but have read about Enbrel (think that's the right name) when researching treatments for my own condition (I have Fibromyalgia).

This treatment is known as a TNF blocker, and works by blocking the cytocines responsible for the inflammation in RA. They are said to help with pain, swollen joints and morning stiffness.

The injection given subcutaneously (directly into the body fat), which is not too painful, and is usually given once or twice a week. These treatment usually take a few weeks before you start to notice any difference, but if you are not noticably improving after 12 weeks, then your doctor will probably discontinue the treatment.

You might notice a small reaction at the injection site, although this usually disappears within a few weeks. Other side effects include increased susceptability to infections and certain blood disorders.

I would also like to say that as a fellow chronic pain sufferer I know it can be very frustrating and isolating. It can also be scary when trying new medications with no real idea other than what the drug leaflet tells. But I found a great online forum for sufferers of my condition, and have found the support invaluable. It might be worth you doing the same.

Good luck, Mel.  (+ info)

If you have Rheumatoid arthritis, you need to see a Rheumatologist, and taking motrin or tylenol, isn't going to do the job. There are certain drugs designed especially for RA - and the sooner you get on them, the better off you will be. RA can do some major damage to your joints, but it can also affect your overall health, and the inflammation isn't just isolated to your joints. Pain medication, just masks the pain, it doesn't decrease the inflammation - while I understand the need to ease the pain, you need to be careful with your joints, if you mask the pain too much, you can do some damage to your joints. If you haven't seen a Rheumatologist, please, please go see one, they are much better at assessing RA and prescribing the best treatment. Physical therapy can also be helpful - ask the Dr about it. Good luck
If you have osteo-arthritis there are still meds that may work better than motrin - again, a Rheumatologist may be better able to help you - please be careful with the NSAIDS (motrin etc) be sure you have some food in your stomach when you take these - there are some prescriptions that are easier on the stomach that work better than motrin.
If you do have RA, I recommend you learn as much as you possibly can about it - while it may be a little scary, the more you learn about it, and are able to discuss things with your Dr, the better off you will be - and remember, not everyone gets some of the worst parts of RA. But, thats why seeing a Rheumatologist and educating yourself is so important. Again, the sooner the better.  (+ info)

Please consult your Rheumatologist! As you mentioned earlier this could well be a manifestation of your RA (Rheumatoid Vasculitis?). How long do you suffer from RA? What is your current medication? Is your arthritis exacerbating as well?  (+ info)
