How fast does an anaphylactic reaction occur?

I've been having some allergic reactions lately (my allergist hasn't been able to identify the cause). Currently, my lips and eyelids are swollen. It feels like my throat is swelling, or very very sore, but I can still breathe. It feels like there is a slight pressure in my chest, but again, nothing severe. I took 50 mg of Zyrtec a few hours ago, to little effect. It's been like this for at least two hours.

Is this an anaphylactic reaction? Is the throat swelling likely to get worse, or after two hours am I pretty much safe from having my throat close up?

Basically, if nothing extremely severe has happened within an hour or so, can it be ruled out as an anaphylactic reaction or should I still go to a hospital or something?
----------

I can't beleive you're asking this kind of question on Yahoo!!! Call your MD. If you can't get hold of him go to the ER right now!

Anaphylactic reactions can start slow, but once they get going they are EXTREMELY hard to stop. You should have an Epipen and know how to use it.

Unfortunately one of our local colleges had a sad incident where a student who was allergic to peanuts ate some food containing peanuts. He told the people at the food court that he was allergic and they all tried to get him to go to the hospital but he refused and went back to his dorm room. His Resident assistant tried to talk him into going also. A few hours later he was having trouble breathing and finally agreed to go to the hospital, but it was too late. He died on the way.

Anaphylaxis is like an avalanche... it only takes some little thing to get it started, and at first it moves slowly, but once it gets going, it is hard to stop.  (+ info)

Can you please advice how I know wheter I am having a reaction or not? Thanks a bunch.

You should call your pharmacist and ask him. If you think you are it could be life threatening and you need to talk to your dentists too. Also are eating a little yogurt everyday? Being on antibiotics that long can kill the good bacteria in your stomach and the yogurt helps replace them. Here are some possible signs of a side effect
What are the symptoms of penicillin allergy?
Common allergic reactions to penicillin include rashes, hives, itchy eyes, and swollen lips, tongue, or face.

On rare occasions, an allergy to penicillin can cause an anaphylactic reaction, which can be deadly. This type of reaction usually develops within an hour of taking penicillin. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, hives, wheezing, dizziness, loss of consciousness, rapid or weak pulse, skin turning blue, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. If you think you are having an anaphylactic reaction, call 911 immediately.

What are risk factors for having a severe allergic reaction to penicillin?
Severe allergic reactions to penicillin can be dangerous and life-threatening. You should receive an alternative antibiotic or undergo desensitization therapy (taking small doses of the medication over a period of time—under a doctor's supervision—until your immune system tolerates the medication) if you have had:

A positive skin test for penicillin allergy.
Hives that appeared rapidly after taking the antibiotic.
An anaphylactic reaction to penicillin.
You are not at an increased risk for developing an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin if you have experienced a measles-like rash that appears from a few hours to days after taking penicillin.

What is the difference between an allergic reaction and a side effect?

I thought maybe I was having an allergic reaction to tylenol but some yahoo answers corrected me and said I maybe having a side effect to the tylenol which cause a rash look to my face. Please tell me what is the difference and what can I do over the counter until I can see a doctor please.
----------

An allergic reaction is a specific type of reaction which involves your body's rejection of a protein containing substance. You cannot have an allergic reaction to a non-protein substance eg codeine sulphate. An allergic reaction involves antibodies and antigens. It is the result of repeated exposure to foreign proteins.

A side effect is the undesired effect of a medication. The side effect can include an allergic response. For example the main effect of morphine is pain relief however the side effect is constipation. I hope this has helped you differentiate the two.  (+ info)

How long should symptoms of an allergic reaction stay around?

I had an allergic reaction to scallops. I recall eating them as a child but for some reason I got sick Thursday. The only thing the doctor did was write me a prescription for a steroid. I have been taking them but I am still itching off and on and I just don't feel well. Should I go back to see a doctor?

Call the Dr or the Dr's nurse instead and save a few dollars since s/he should have explained what to expect when the meds were prescribed.  (+ info)

What reaction causes an Irish Car Bomb to curdle?

I am 21, and had my first Irish Car Bomb about a week ago. I was wondering what components in the types alcohol cause such a quick reaction?
----------

It is the acidic nature (acids) in the beer & whiskey. Beer is slightly acidic.

Sources of acid in beer:
Acidulation of the barley during the mash.
Isomerization of hop alhpa-acids in the boil-kettle.
Some lowering of pH during fermentation.
Spoilage bacteria.

Whiskey is also acidic for similar reasons:
Acidulation of the barley & sometimes corn mash.
Some lowering of pH during fermentation.
Spoilage or aging bacteria found in wood barrels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curd
Curd is a dairy product obtained by curdling (coagulating) milk with rennet or an edible acidic substance such as lemon juice or vinegar and then draining off the liquid portion (called whey). Milk that has been left to sour (raw milk alone or pasteurized milk with added lactic acid bacteria) will also naturally produce curds, and sour milk cheese is produced this way. The increased acidity causes the milk proteins (casein) to tangle into solid masses, or "curds".
