Do you need a registered nurse degree to be a neonatal nurse?

What education do you need to be a neonatal nurse?
----------

You have to be at least an LVN or in some states LPN. There you can attend to neonatal patients, but you will always be "under" an RN and the doctor. If you become an RN you will have more duties and more responsibility, along with more pay of course. There are many ways to become an RN with a 2 year associates being the most common. From there when you get hired at a hospital you can try to get onto the neonatal floor, but most RNs will have to be in the ER before they will be considered for neonatal wing.  (+ info)

What are the requirements for a neonatal nurse?

HELP!! I plan on becoming a neonatal nurse when I go to college, and I have no idea what classes I need to be taking now, in high school, or what college to go to. If you know of a GOOD nursing college, and what courses I need to be taking now, it would help immensely. Any advice would help.

Thanks
----------

What to do now:
The pre-reqs you'll take in college are generally very science heavy. Be prepared to take bio and/or chem, 2 anatomy classes, and a micro class (at the least). Taking similar classes in high school will prepare you. You'll need to be confident in your math (algebra) to get through school and those pre-reqs, so make sure you're doing ok there, too.
Also, get some experience working with patients. Volunteer at a hospital if you can. Work with lots of people in different situations because in nursing school, you will see so many situations you never imagined.

How to find a good school:
If you want to find a good nursing school, ask about NCLEX pass rates. That's the national licensing exam; I researched/attended several schools and never found a rate below 90%.
You're going to have two basic options when getting a nursing degree; one is to go to a 4 year university, and get a bachelor's in nursing (BSN). This takes (minimum) 4 years. The other is to go to a community/junior college and get an associate's in nursing (ADN). This will take (minimum) 2.5 years. Graduates from both programs take the same licensing exam and both can get the same entry level jobs.
What are the differences? Some places pay BSNs a bit more to start. Most places require a BSN to be in a supervisory position, like a head nurse, but ADN to BSN programs for working nurses are fairly common. Surprisingly, I learned that some hospitals actually prefer the ADN graduates, because their classes are a bit more patient care focused while BSN graduates recieve a bit more leadership skill training. Either way, you will have NO problem finding a job.  (+ info)

What does it take to because a neonatal nurse?

Ever since i was little i've always loved infants and i've always wanted to be a neonatal nurse. I make high B's and low-high A's in school if that means i'm smart enough. (:

I've always wanted a job that i can stick with that i would really like since my mom doesn't like her job as a paramedic and continuously talks about transfering to something else and going back to college for another degree.

Hi Elie, I work in one of the best NICU's in Dallas ... All you have to do is go to nursing school and most NICU's will offer you an extensive training program where you will be assigned an experienced neonatal nurse who will guide you way through the wonderful world of neonatal nursing.

I have the most respect for neonatal nurses ... its a tough but rewarding job.

Good luck!  (+ info)

What does a Obstetrics and Gynecologist nurse do?How is it different from a neonatal nurse?

Ok so i really one to be one of the two. But i want something that's worth all the schooling and other stuff. something i can really enjoy so can somebody help me out...If you have been a Obstetrics nurse/or a neonatal nurse before it is worth it? Can you explain to me what u guys really do?
whats the best school for an Obstetrics nurse
----------

An obstetrics nurse takes care of the mother before and during labor, and may have some part in taking care of the baby right after birth. A neonatal nurse, takes care of unhealthy or critical care babies after birth. If needed they will be in the delivery room waiting to take care of the baby when it comes out, but they usually work in the NICU taking care of the babies that are in trouble. No, I am not one. But have had babies. Obstetrics is care before and during birth. Neonatal is care of unhealthy babies that have just been born.  (+ info)

In neonatal jaundice; Is it practical to check breath CO2 to monitor the course and the treatment?

It's said that in healthy well neonatal icter there is a rise in breath CO2 -measurable with capnography- which correlates well with the extent of icter and course of it (regardless of the treatment). So it can be used as a noninvasive test to evaluate the icter in its first presentation and to monitor the treatment.
I'm planning a search to evaluate above statement. Would you kindly help me understand value of my thought to carry on?
