How do people die from tetanus?

Is it from asphyxia? Do they starve to death? Or is it a mixture between different things?
----------

etanus is a medical condition that is characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fibres. The primary symptoms are caused by tetanospasmin, a neurotoxin produced by the Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium tetani. Infection generally occurs through wound contamination, and often involves a cut or deep puncture wound. As the infection progresses, muscle spasms in the jaw develop, hence the common name, lockjaw. This is followed by difficulty in swallowing and general muscle stiffness and spasms in other parts of the body.[1] Infection can be prevented by proper immunization and by post-exposure prophylaxis.

In order to survive a tetanus infection, the maintenance of an airway and proper nutrition are required. An intake of 3500-4000 Calories, and at least 150g of protein per day, is often given in liquid form through a tube directly into the stomach, or through a drip into a vein. This high-caloric diet maintenance is required because of the increased metabolic strain brought on by the increased muscle activity.  (+ info)

Hypoxia Vs. Asphyxia?

Can someone give me a simple explanation on the relationship of Hypoxia to Asphyxia?
----------

Hypoxia can be due to internal causes such as brain injury or COPD or emphysema that interrupts normal o2 uptake.

asphyxia is the cutting off of oxygen to the lungs thru external sources such as strangulation or smothering, or chemical overwhelm such as carbon monoxide.  (+ info)

Amniotic Asphyxia?

I have written a free-improvsation piece of music called Amniotic Asphyxia - what do you thing it's about??
To clarify, I have composed and arranged a song which is improvised live by 6 musicians.

The piece is called 'Amniotic Asphyxia', and I would like know how you interprate this title, what you think it means, and whether you like it. Thanks.
I put it in this sction because (with a name like Amniotic Asphyxia) it's obviously to do with babies and I was wondering how people reading the pregnancy section might inteprate it specifically.

Cheers!

I am in my 24th weeks of pregnancy and just found out that my blood pressue is 95/130. What to do?

This is my second pregnancy and I had suffered from same probem last year during my first baby. I was induced at 36 weeks of pregnancy but my baby could not survive. She has asphyxia ( though docs say it has nothing to do with BP). I am realy scared now. I had some parties at home, maybe I over-exerted and hence have a high BP? Can it get back to normal once it has elevalted? Most important - Can a low salt diet reduce my BP? I am really worried, pls suggest any remedies. I work from home so dont go to office. I am 29 years of age. Want to be really really cautious this time. Anyone facing same problem? Will this harm my baby? Pls help
I called up my doc..she has asked me to come tomorrow. I asked you guys on Yahoo answers as i was feeling worried and wanted to know what others had to say. My BP was normal till 15 days back.

Can i sue the doctor or the surgeon for asphyxia secondary to aspiration of emesis?

My dad was in the hospital because of an old car accident that caused scar tissue to build up around his small intestine and bowel obstructions, he had the surgery done 3 times in the past to remove the scar tissue and was fine afterwards, this time they did thier scan at the VA and the surgeon would not give him surgery. My dad started to get fed up with them not giving him surgery and they sedated him. The autopsy came back, " the cause of death is asphyxia secondary to aspiration of emesis as a consequence of small bowel obstruction. This probably wouldn't have killed his if the doctors hadn't decided to sedate him.
----------

It depends on whether the hospital can show that they performed all necessary precautions to prevent aspiration of emesis, of which there are many (it's a common complication of any type of sedation). Obviously a patient with small bowel obstruction is at a considerably higher risk for vomiting and should have been monitored closely while sedated, and suctioned and/or intubated at the first sign of aspiration. Additionally, if the sedation was against his will, or the will of whoever had the legal authority for his medical decisions, you have a much stronger case. You don't say whether he died during a procedure and/or under general anesthesia, which could change things.

I'd definitely talk to a lawyer. You have a fairly classic malpractice case on your hands.  (+ info)

what is probable positional asphyxia?

Probable means the doctor isn't sure but is giving an educated guess.

Positional means it was caused by what position the body was in.

Asphyxia means suffocation.

So the person probably died from lack of air due to the position of the body at the time.  (+ info)

How did Heath Ledger died? Did he suffocated? He knew he was dying in his sleep and try to wake up?

was his body frozen so he couldn't move and died of asphyxia?

What really happened? Did he suffered?

I ask this because sometimes it happens that when you are sleeping and try to wake up you can hear things around (aware) but your body is kinda stiff(lol) and can't move for a few seconds or even minutes but with an ovedose or fatal mixture, how is it like?

Could it be dangerous to use broken CPAP mask?

I use a CPAP machine to sleep; it's a resmed device and the mask is a full face mask. It has an "anti-asphyxia valve" (the elbow assembly) that has broken. I have used pvc tape to hold it together, but it's covering the vents. I'm wondering if I am risking asphyxiating myself? I have a new valve on order, but in the meantime, I'm not sure if it's better to stop using the machine or use it patched up as it is. Thanks!
----------

is it the small clip on the side of the rotating collar? if so take the tape off and lodge a toothpick into the side of the collar to hold the clip, it will still leak some air but better than sleeping without the air flow. good luck  (+ info)

Traumatic asphyxia?

Can anyone tell me more about this. Eg like causes of it, signs & symptoms, treatment given in singapore hospital & pathophysiology of it? Thank You.
----------

Traumatic asphyxia or crush asphyxia is usually used to describe compressive asphyxia resulting form being crushed or pinned under a large weight or force. In accidents, the term traumatic asphyxia or crush asphyxia is usually used to describe compressive asphyxia resulting form being crushed or pinned under a large weight or force. An example of traumatic asphyxia include cases where an individual has been using a car-jack to repair a car from below only to be crushed under the weight of the vehicle[4] when the car-jack slips.
