Breastmilk is always ideal in almost every situation. There are very few exceptions, but severe asphyxia would not be one of them. Is he on oxygen? Is he able to nurse at the breast? Is he restricted to a NICU bed? How is he being fed - breast, bottle, feeding tube, etc? If the mother is available, and she can't nurse her baby directly, she can still provide him with breastmilk if she pumps.  (+ info)

sepsis is when bacteria get into the bloodstream. that is very very bad because your body goes into overdrive to kill them and ends up killing you pretty often too. and bacteria love to eat blood and grow really well in it. asphyxias is suffocation; i don't know what birth asphyxias is, though i would guess it would mean the baby suffocated during birth (like having the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck), since I don't know how the mother could suffocate during birth.  (+ info)

Hey does anyone know about urban decay eye pigment? Good quality? Price? Any comments are much appreciated. I was thinking about getting this colour called asphyxia. Yeah I know....weird. So anyways Im thinking about getting that but not before your opinion.

The pigments are great and Asphyxia is a really cool colour. At $20 a pop they definitely aren't cheap but for such a unique colour, I think it's worth the purchase.  (+ info)

Asphyxia occurs when there is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from being unable to breathe normally. Why do we use deliriants to treat psychosis?

Atypical antipsychotics such as Clozaril are muscarinic anticholinergic antagonists, which are also known as deliriants. If a person antagonizes the muscarinic cholinergic receptors badly enough it is known to cause delirium. That's not just seeing things, you completely lose the ability to distinguish hallucinations from reality, your memory is impaired, and sometimes real life seems like it's just a dream and vice versa. Deliriants screw you up so badly most recreational drug users even ones that love hallucinogens more than anything else don't like them. For example, datura is a completely legal flower plant that grows everywhere but very few people use it because very few people like being delirious. This plant is the source of zombie legends in Haiti where so-called "wizards" would poison their victims with another drug to lower their heart rate to indetectable levels, then steal the body after it was buried but before the victim died of asphyxia(they'd have a longer time because their breathing had also slowed down), and drugged the victim with datura and then repeated this. The victim would believe they were zombies and that they had to do what ever the wizard told them. This worked so well wizards thought they had actually created zombies and that the drugs they used were a form of magic when actually what they had accomplished was drug-induced mind control.

But I digress, isn't this counterintuitive that you'd use a drug to treat psychosis that causes one of the most severe forms of psychosis if used too much?
Well Clozaril works by blocking receptors in the brain for several neurotransmitters including dopamine type 4 receptors, serotonin type 2 receptors, norepinephrine receptors, acetylcholine receptors, and histamine receptors. This helps control the symptoms of schizophrenia although its not entirely understood how it works in the brain.

This medicine is not the first choice for the treatment of schizophrenia but is a valuable medicine for patients who have a resistance to or negative side effects from other treatments.
However in a recent study by NIMH Clorazil has been found to be the most effective medicine for treating schizophrenia. I don't know they they chose to develop an anticholinergic substance for that purpose but im leaning towards dumb luck. Maybe that schizophrenia wasn't its original target.  (+ info)

What do I do about constant suicidal urges?

For months now, I've been thinking and imagining suicide. I'm seeing a councilor and psychiatrist on a somewhat regular basis, but I'm starting to fall into another pit of despair, and I've got no outlet for it. The councilor's office is closed until Monday, and I'm far, FAR too paranoid to call a hotline. I know they'll relay what I say to a local crisis center, who will get an ambulance to waltz right up to my door and wheel me away to a psychiatric ward. I would much rather die than be treated like an animal and lose all privacy.

I've got no one to tell my story to, nowhere to run, and nothing to occupy me. I've really run out of options. Can't get my hands on cyanide, and I don't have a gun or knife that could do the job. Strangulation, asphyxia, and hanging are out of the question at this point.

I'm totally stuck in the deepest of depths, and I've got no way of getting out. I was told that things would "inevitably get better", 3 months ago. They've gotten worse. Don't give me that BS, I've heard it all before.
I'm an atheist, none of that Jesus crap, please. And I've painstakingly looked through most things that would happen as a result, and though my family would be devastated, it would be only localized, contained harm, since they're really the only ones that care.
Keep thinking about positive things. Share your feelings with someone you trust. Mention that you don't want to go to the hospital and have no privacy. I'm sure arrangements can be made because most of the time the person that is caring for you only wants you to be happy.  (+ info)

my baby is 3 month old now , but she had asphyxia when she was born .. she did not cry or breathe for 3-4 mins , was blue and limp .. doctors are saying that she will be fine as she did not have any convulsions the first 72 hours of her life .. but i'm scared that she might have some brain damage in those mins ..
she is grwoing ine now , weight gain on the track , milestones coming on fine , but i'm still gettiing paranoid .. does any one else have a baby who had that problem ,, did ur baby turn out fine later .. please help .. i'm getting crazy worrying abt her ..
My mom said i was blue when i was born and didnt cry or breath for a few minutes , she though i was dead . Im perfectly fine now i do have adhd but thats only because it runs in my family.

How likely is it that a baby with meconium aspiration will develop lung problems etc. in later life?

Basically, my 6 week old niece Olivia was born with severe meconium aspiration, a syndrome where the baby opens its bowels in the womb causing the lungs to become inflamed, she also suffered with asphyxia and internal hemorrhaging which meant she was coughing up blood also. She had to have a catheter fitted and also had a blood transfusion. She was in the neonatal on a ventilator with nitrates and oxygen for four and a half weeks. She has since made a full recovery and is now at home with her parents, I was just wondering, after such a bad start and all the complications is it likely that she will suffer any other illnesses in the future such a pneumonia or something due to the severity of her aspiration, and how likely is it?
There are studies, indicating that those born with MAS are at a higher risk of having reactive airway disease (lungs that are more sensitive and can possibly lead to an asthmatic condition).

They may be more likely to have wheezing and lung infections during their first year, but lungs can regenerate new air sacs, so the long-term prognosis for their lungs is excellent.

Severely affected babies are at risk for developing chronic lung disease and may also have developmental abnormalities and hearing loss. Babies diagnosed with MAS will be screened at the hospital for hearing problems or neurological damage.

The likelihood? It is hard to determine, because each child is different.

Olivia is very fortunate, this can be a devastating syndrome. She sounds like she is doing well. This is why I do what I do, to watch these sweet "gifts" go home with their parents.  (+ info)
