Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a growing concern in the United States. How does ADHD diffe?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a growing concern in the United States. How does ADHD differ from disruptive behavior disorder? How can these two disorders affect a classroom? Do you believe doctors over-prescribe medication for ADHD? Explain your answer.
----------

ADHD is a disruptive behavior disorder, disruptive behavior disorder is a broad term used to describe disorders that cause disruptive behavior and one of them is ADHD, others include ODD (oppositional defiance disorder) and CD (conduct disorder).

They affect the classroom in many ways. The child fails to learn and gets in trouble a lot, often frustrating the teacher and distracting others from learning. I do not beleive mediaction is over prescribed as only aroundc 2% of children in the USA are current;y being treated on medication for ADHD.  (+ info)

ADHD IS a disruptive behavior disorder.
"ADHD is classified as a disruptive behavior disorder along with oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder and antisocial disorder."

The effects are more specific to the academics of the sufferer in question, although inability to pay attention can spread quickly (kids like to talk during boring lessons).

I don't think I know of anyone on ADHD medication, but diagnoses are thrown around all to often. I was hyper when I was a kid, maybe it was a mild case of ADHD that I grew out of, but I grew out of it nonetheless, and I'm doing fine now. I believe it's only worth prescribing as the child reaches middle school, because the consequences of failing in elementary school are much less severe than failing in high school. After the age of 16, however, it should be entirely up to the student (if it isn't, already), because he can choose whether he even wishes to pursue his education past this point (in Canada at least).
I think I've known one student personally whose behaviour was becoming a problem in class (he was often loud, and he fell asleep during class, actually), but I think he probably grew out of it (as do about 50% of people with ADHD). He was also dyslexic, however. There is a decent chance of comorbidity with ADHD, so the coexisting disorders may be neglected by therapists.

Students with more severe cases of ADHD should probably be put into special needs classes.

There's a whole article on this on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention-deficit_hyperactivity_disorder_controversies
"In 2005 82% of teachers in the United States consider ADHD to be over diagnosed while 3% consider it to be under diagnosed. In China 19% of teachers consider ADHD to be over diagnosed while 57% consider it to be under diagnosed." So, it also depends on the expectations of society.  (+ info)

Can an M.D diagnose psychological disorders like Attention Deficit?

Or do you need a psychiatrist or something of that sort? I'm wanting to start getting my old prescription for Adderall, I've been diagnosed with ADHD 3 times in my life but stopped taking the Adderall about a year ago. I vaguely remember having to drive to the next city over to be re-diagnosed then so I don't know.. Help? (:
----------

I have ADHD and I've been going to a psychiatrist for over 13 years for mine. Your MD may be able to pick up on the signs, but a psychiatrist will be more detailed and direct. And also, if you start and stop your adderall, you'll get headaches and more of te side affects. I hope this helped you and good luck! :]  (+ info)

I am 14 years old and I have ADD.
My elementary years were terrible...i wasn't a behavior problem (most girls aren't) but I couldn't keep my mind on one thing. I fidget all the time... I multi-task and I have a very short attention span. I was diagnosed with ADD last year and at first I was upset. Why LABEL me with this disorder? I found out more about it and it's actually a breath of fresh air to know that that was the reason I couldn't keep many friends (communication problems) and that's why I always felt different.

My older sister has it too...diagnosed when she was 18. She's 27 now. She says that when she makes love, its hard for her to enjoy it because she has so many racing thoughts and that creates relationship problems.  (+ info)

What to do about attention deficit disorder?

I have a chronic attention deficit problem. I cannot concentrate for more than a few seconds. I cannot remember what I did a few hours ago. Today I day dreamed through my train station and ended up further than I intended to go. If I drive somewhere I cannot remember how I got there. I forget everything. I walk out of meetings and I cannot remember what was said. It's beginning to seriously impede my career. Is there anything that can be done about this?

What doctor do I go to, to find out if I have adult adult attention-deficit disorder?

I think I have attention deficit disorder. There are several types and I have symptoms of either one. I just do not want to play doctor anymore and find out for sure. Thanks in advance.

Start out with your regular doctor. He/she may be an internist or 'generalist'. From there they may want to send you to a specialist.  (+ info)
