How much back pain is normal after pregnancy before getting concerned?

My son is 4 months old, and I still have horrible back pain at times. Most of the time it's a dull ache across my whole lower back, but at other times, it locks up completely and I can barely move.

Is this normal, and if so, when can I expect it to go away?

I did have an epidural, about 5 monutes before they decided to do a c-section, so it was really pointless. The pain is not in the same spot that they put the needle in.

I have the same pain and my son is only 7 weeks so i don't know when it will end. my doctor gave me motrin 800mg for it, when it gets so bad its unbearable.  (+ info)

How to reduce foot pain, leg pain and back pain while standing at work for a long time?

Hi everyone.
I was just wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to reduce foot pain, leg pain, and back pain while on the job at work.

Thanks! :(
I want to know if there is any foods, minerals, and what not that might be able to help me reduce the pain.
----------

When standing still, have one foot higher than the other, it really works, like even a level of a 3" to 5" can make a difference when standing idle. If working on concrete, get soft soled shoes, like cushions. Trying exercises like walking on toes for a minute. Sitting down on a chair, bring your legs up and stretch your foot all the way forward and then all the way back (may have to have someone help you with this one), it stretches the tendons and muscles you have used one way all day.

Taking baths with epson salts helps (clear with GP). Make sure (via blood work) you have the right balance with potassium, magnesium, and calcium, to keep the leg pain away. Also stand two feet from wall, hold the wall and lean into the wall by relaxing arms, helps with legs. Also massage legs from foot to knee. Keep hydrated.

When you can get a break, put feet up, if you can, higher than heart, helps with the blood circulation. If your feet swell, make sure you have good shoes, see GP to make sure you don't have an underlying medical condition. Compression stockings for men and women are available to help keep the fluids from staying in legs and feet (see GP for guidance).

Back pain requires actually exercise and make sure there is nothing wrong first medically. Lot of stress from standing all day. Swimming is good as a relief, so is yoga and massage. Generally, people that eat right don't need supplements, but who eats right? Balance your meals with lots of greens, fresh veggies, light on meats and beer. Too much calcium like dairy can cause a buildup in blood, so balance is important. Try to stay away from corn products, seems there are people that are on their feet all the time, getting off of corn does help, but they don't know why yet.

Sometimes my son, after being on his feet all day says he feels like he was hit by a truck, God forbid, but he goes on his bike and weird, using different muscles helps the ones he overworked, so try it. If you have no medical problem, sometimes a hobby like bowling can make the difference because of the way we move or not move all day needs all the muscles working.

When tired, do put feet up, massage legs and feet, use pillows for back support and chill out.  (+ info)

Is there a natural pain reliever that really work on severe back pain and spasms?

I am tired of going to doctor for my back pain, and having them just keep refering me to specialist. I need pain relief. Not back surgery! I have some old injury, but the biggest problem is probably a pinched nerve or something that is causing unreal pain.

I have tried, for something similar, reflexology to relax the entire body, followed by work on the specific area, ie your back.

It may not be reflexology that works for you, it may be something else - accupressure, biofeedback, yoga, ... There are many, many different things to try. You'll know pretty quickly if you found the right thing for you. If not, move on, try the next thing, or try a different practitioner.

Whatever the treatment, or treatments of choice, try to go to a facility that has a place where you can relax before and after, and try to give yourself time for this. To me, this makes a very significant difference - I used to rush to finish what I was doing, rush in the car to get to the treatment, rush out of the treatment in traffic, the try to make up for whatever activity I had missed time on - this negated the treatment.

Whatever the treatment is, start with the treatment not for your back, to get your body ready. Then, over several sessions, slowly increase the focus on your back.

Note that when I say relax, I mean much more than that, but I cannot describe it very well. Maybe well being is a better description. It seems as though it makes your body really have its full ability to deal with the issue.

It worked for me. Good luck.  (+ info)

How long can back pain before periods last?

I had to take Plan B twice in the past 30 days and I was supposed to get my period this weekend around Sunday or Monday. On Sunday, I started to get cramps and lower back pain which I normally get right before my period. I expected to get my period on Monday, but it didn't come. My cramps/back pain continued and are continuing today (Tuesday). I feel like I should get my period any second but it's not coming! How long does this pre-menstrual back pain last before you get your period?
----------

It can last anywhere from a few hours and even up to a week before your period begins. At least that's what happens for me: I get cramps a week before my period and then 2-3 days into the period.
Try not to stress too much about it because that could make it delay your period even more.  (+ info)

How early can lower back pain and pain in the uterus begin after conception?

My partner and I have tried to concieve, and in the last couple days she has had some minor lower back pain and pain in the area of her Uterus. She is not due for a period for quite some time, but it seems too soon. It hasn't even been a week yet since intercourse. Could this be a sign of conception?

How do you relieve lower back pain in your 3rd trimester?

I've been sooo uncomfortable for about 2 weeks now. I have lower back pain across the back side of my hips. I know it's just the baby putting pressure on my body, but I can't sleep.

How did/do you help the pain?
----------

I used a hot water bottle. It really helped!  (+ info)

What area of the back would you suffer with pain in the case of an ectopic pregnancy?

My period arrived 6 days late and when it did, I had a normal flow for the first day only and then brown spotting for a week after. I have now suffered from menstrual-like cramps for 3 weeks and woke up today with bad back pain that hurts on my right side, roughly waist height. I have had urine and blood tests which came back negative. In the case of an ectopic pregnancy, would my back pain be lower? Thank you for any help you can offer!
----------

in an ectopic you would still test positive. you're not pregnant.  (+ info)

What are some easy methods to relieve back pain?

My boyfriend works from 11PM - 7AM. He complains of back pain and we've been putting Biofreeze on it and it seems to be helping for the rest of the day. Then when he comes home he says his back hurts again. He says he has a job where he does nothing but stand so it makes his back hurt and we aren't able to make a chiropractor appointment. Are there any other methods to relieve his back pain but for a longer amount of time?
Its not a chronic pain but it does annoy him.
----------

You don't state his age or what his general state of health or conditioning are. This is important as the better shape he is in the faster things are going to get better. Does he stand on concrete all of his shift? If he does then it would help him to get better shoes with support built in or get some Dr. Scholl's gel inserts. As for the daily pain use ice on the lower back for fifteen to twenty minutes each hour. This will stop the pain and swelling that is taking place. Is he doing any lifting at work and if so does he wear a lifting belt? This might help to a degree if only to remind him to use his legs not his back to lift. Does he do any stretching while at work and especially when he comes home? Here are a few stretches that can be done at home. Lie on the floor with the legs totally outstretched. Keep the knees down and gently pull the front of the feet towards the knees. There should be a gentle stretching sensation in the calves. From the starting position bring one knee up to the chest and bear hug it down using the arms. Hold for ten seconds and then release to a point where the hip is at 90 degrees. Bring the knee down again and repeat for four more times. Slowly return that leg to the floor and do the other leg. On the last repetition of that leg keep the knee up and bring the opposite leg up to it. Bring both knees into the chest and bear hug them for ten seconds. Repeat four more times. Return one leg slowly to the floor and then the remaining leg. Bring one leg up so that the foot is flat on the floor and the knee is bent to 90 degrees. Using the opposite leg bring it up straight as far as it will go gently. Hold that stretch for ten and repeat four more times. Reverse legs and repeat the process five times. Bring both knees up to the position of being flat on the floor and the knees at 90 degrees. Slowly rock the knees from one side to the other. Find a rhythm which is comfortable and continue for a minute or two. Work on crunches and hip extension exercises that will stabilize the pelvis. Most of all see a physical therapist that can help with postural issues along with setting up an exercise program that can be done at home and at a gym.  (+ info)

What does cramping and back pain in between your periods mean?

I had on period that was 3 weeks late. Then my next two were a couple days early. In between my last period and this one (around the middle of my cycle) I had two different days, about a week apart from each other that I had bad cramping and back pain. No bleeding. Then my period came 3 days late. I have never been regular, but this pain in between is not normal for me. What could be causing this? I'm not pregnant.
----------

Assuming you aren't pregnant (which causes similar discomfort), you're probably ovulating. Occurs in mid cycle typically & feels similar to mild period cramps/discomfort or pms symptoms & can also cause spotting.

Another possiblility is polycystic ovary/ovarian syndrom or PCOS. Pretty common (I have it, several aquaintances/friends do also!) & can be mildly to extremely painful & dabilitating from occurrence to occurrence. This can cause you to spot, too, when the cyst(s) erupts.

Regardless, you should see your gyn!  (+ info)

What will help lower back pain from standing on hard floor at work?

I stand on a hard floor for 8 hours a day (everyday) at work. By the time I go home my back is hurting so bad I find it hard to stand up-right and walk. Back belts are not allowed. Is there anything I can do to ease the pain while I'm working?
----------

Make sure you have a really good pair of comfortable but sturdy shoes and maybe try getting some gel insoles. I'm not sure what your job is, but if you can, you could try asking your boss to put down some kind of carpeting or other dampening material that would help take away the strain..   (+ info)
