How can I relieve back pain when I am pregnant and on bed rest?

Alright, so I just got rid of boils on my back and now have severe back pain because I am pregnant. I am on strict bed rest on orders of the doctor because I went into pre-term with my last child. Nothing I do helps and I am in pain no matter what I do and how I lay in bed. Any suggestions on how I can relieve the pain?
----------

1. Get extra pillows to prop yourself up well.
2. Sleep with a pillow between your knees. This works wonders.
3. Get a heating pad to lay on.
4. Consider your mattress. The end of my first trimester was bad agony on my back. But we got a new mattress (which we desperately needed and were already planning on) and my back is sooooo much better. I know it is an expensive solution, but if you are already in need, maybe now is the time.  (+ info)

How do you treat chronic back pain after having an epidural?

I had an epi with my last birth 2 years ago and have suffered chronic back pain since. Have seen a chiro and physio but the pain is still there.
----------

An orthopedic doc is worth seeing. You might just need custom arch supports!

There is a series of three epidural shots which are used to treat this back problem. They usually work, but not until after the third shot. Ask you doc about this.

If these solutions don't work, there are other solutions, up to and including severing the nerve which is causing the problem. Keep talking with your doc, and don't give up!  (+ info)

The Doctor perscribed me Robaxin for my back pain it dont work?

It doesnt help the pain plus upsets my stomache and gives me a headache. I wonder what medicine should I try or ask for? The pain is near the middle of my shoulders, and I read Robaxin is for lower back pain,,,any advice? Thanks!
----------

Robaxin is a muscle relaxant and works on the nervous system. If this is not working then return to your Doctor and explain that it is not working. I do not advise you walk in and demand a different drug, just explain it is not working. As for 'lower back pain' drugs do not 'target' any particular areas, so even if you had pain in your finger or toe, you would probably still be prescribed the same drug. Best of Luck  (+ info)

How can back pain radiate to your limbs?

I have a family member with Fibromyalgia, and she deals with severe back pain. This pain often spreads to her arms and sometimes causes her hand to curl up. Why is this so? How is it all linked?
I'm really curious to know, because knowledge can be a start to finding out ways to help it. Thanks!
----------

Is she being medically managed by an orthopedic specialist? If not, she needs to be medically evaluated as many potential causes exist, and a chiropractor is not qualified to diagnose some of them, much less treat them. The pain she is having is radiated along nerves that originate from nerve roots emerging directly from the spinal cord. Any irritation of the nerve roots, or the along the paths of the nerves may cause the pain. The curling of her hand is the result of damage to the nerves serving the muscles that flex the fingers.  (+ info)

How early did you start having back pain in your pregnancy?

I'm only 7 weeks, I am overweight and it could be a contributing factor to my back pain, but I didn't start having back pain until this week. Is it too early for me to be having back pain in my pregnancy? Only experienced and mature answers please.
----------

Well, I wish I knew if you were larger breasted because that's how I was too. When you're that early in your pregnancy your breasts are sore and if their large too then that could be causing some extra stress to your back, the pregnancy itself might be contributing but I don't think you're far along enough for it to be your actual tummy. Then again, is it your upper back or lower back? Upper back is usually caused by the breasts and lower back is usually from what I've heard an epidural but I'm not sure if this is your first or not. Maybe you've got an extra little one in there, you never know. If I were you I'd talk to your doctor about it as soon as possible because if it's hurting now, it's going to be hurting a lot later on and after your have your baby it will just bother you even more, so you might want to ask what are some things you can avoid doing to less stress your back, also stray from getting an epidural when you do have your baby because it causes even more back problems later on. Good luck and I hope you fell better.  (+ info)

What are some causes of my specific back pain?

I am 13, and I have pain in the lower muscle of my back. It is the muscle on the left side of my back just above my hip, and if feels like a ripping pain. What is this, how could this have started, and how should I deal with it.
----------

Sometimes staying in the same position for too long such as when sleeping (an example only) can cause this kind of pain.

However, because the pain feels like there's a rip it sounds like something more could be going on such as a tear to one of the muscles (another example only).

I would recommend letting your mom know what's going on so that she can help you keep an eye on the situation.  (+ info)

What to do when back pain bad and unable to get to gp medical centre?

Back pain is bad making walking very difficult. Patient is a pensioner, with no one to help, is unable to get to see doctor and doctors will not make house calls. What should he/she do.
----------

There are many reasons for back pain. There is very little information about the patient. I understand that the patient is an aged person. Does he work hard or sit around on a couch? It is also important to know the patient’s mattress condition as a poor quality mattress can also cause back pain. Too much sitting, lack of exercise, improper lifting, poor posture, and/or obesity can cause back pain also.

Arthritis is one of the most common reasons for back pain. The type of arthritis most often seen in the spine is Osteoarthritis-sometimes called Degenerative Joint Disease. This is a progressive disease that is most common in the hands but is often found in the bones of the back as well. This condition is seen on an x-ray and is more common as you age. It is thought that if you maintain normal back function and motion with certain exercises, stretches and regular back adjustments, arthritis can be prevented or postponed.

Spinal Stenosis is an age-related disease where the openings in the spine that the nerves come out of become smaller. This often causes pain running down the leg (sciatica), which makes walking difficult. This condition is found with x-ray, CT scan, or MRI. This can be a difficult problem to treat successfully. Choosing the right doctor is essential for this condition.  (+ info)

What are some good ways to relieve back pain from sports?

Every once in a while I get sharp pain in my lower back. I'm guessing it's from working out for long periods of time and over exerting myself. Any suggestions to relieve the pain or prevent it from coming back again?
----------

I get lower back pain from time to time too. I randomly feel a surge of pain when i'm laying down funny.

Stretch your back out and try not to stay in the position that you first experience pain in. Moving around may hurt, but not moving into another position may hurt even more.  (+ info)

Can a lower back injury cause pain in the abdomen and groin area?

I have a herniated disk in S1-L5 and experience periodic abdominal cramps and pain radiating into my groin area. Can the two be connected to a lower back problem?
----------

It is very possible to have referred pain to your groin and abdomen from a herniated disc at this level in your spine. Although the L5 nerve root innervates your butt, lower leg, and foot along with S1. It is possible that you have another herniated disc above L5-S1.
If you sneeze or cough and that reproduces your symptoms, that is related to your back for sure.
Be sure to have a thorough neurological exam to assess your sensation, muscle function, and reflexes.  (+ info)
