Open lung biopsy with a camera -How dangerous is this procedure?

My mom has infiltrates in her lungs. The pulmonary specialist did a bronchoscopy and was not able to determine what these infiltrates are. He is certain it is not cancerous but rather an inflammatory issue. My mom never smoked. Concern is how painful, dangerous is this for a 67 year old woman..Other major illnesses include gastrointestinal problems (barretts disease, H Pylori,Peptic ulcers) The lung dr said that is not related at all. Anyone ever been thru this process? This lung dr has been treating my mom with steroids only for two years. She has been getting worse now. She Has gotten pneumonias twice in two months. The doc says its time to get in there and pull out a larger peice of the tissue to figure it all out...
----------

I had an open chest biopsy. They made three incisions on my right side, one mid-line in my back (about one inch), one about six inches under my armpit towards the back (about one inch), and a larger one about 3 inches below and 3 inches to the right of the nipple area (about a two inch incision). The largest incision was used to insert the chest tube after the biopsy.

Like all surgeries, there is a great deal of risk involved, especially when taking tissue from a lung. I was in the hospital for 5 days and took another 3 weeks after going home to recover from the surgery. When I went home, I was on oxygen 24 hours per day for the first week (about 6 liters initially), and then tapered off until I used it only during physical exertion.

I also had intestinal problems (diverticulitis) and acid reflux. While it is still a theory, research is beginning to show many people with chronic lung disease also have digestive issues (just like cystic fibrosis patients).

My tissue samples were examined initially at the hospital and then sent on to Mayo for a second opinion. It was discovered I had pulmonary fibrosis, a terminal lung disease that causes irreversible scarring in the lungs due to inflammation, interstitial pneumonia, and some COPD. I was 49 when I had the surgery in 2003 and I am a male.

The surgery is difficult (if it is like mine). The chest tube is extremely uncomfortable and painful when removed. Be prepared to have to take care of your mother 24 hours per day for the first week or so after she returns home. The pain will subside in time, and breathing will become easier. Hopefully she doesn't have something serious like pulmonary fibrosis. If she does, go to these web sites for more information and help. I sincerely hope this is something treatable like sarcoidosis. I wish your mother the best of luck.

Where can I buy ground hazelnuts?

I've tried Holland & Barrett and looking online but i've only found bags of 125g at £2.64 a bag and I need at least 400g for a recipe. So that's £10.56 just for some nuts! There must be cheaper out there surely?
I don't have a food processor :(
So buying one would cost more than the nust cost!

Why not try whole nuts and run them through your food processor?  (+ info)

I was just diagnosed with Barretts Esophagus! Please help?

I am a 26 yr old female and about a year ago I was diagnosed with acid reflux and my regular doctor ended up putting me on Prevacid. The prevacid has been helping a little bit but it seemed that my acid reflux wasn't getting any better so this last Wednesday I went to see a gastrointerologist to have a EGD procedure done. The gastrointerologist took a biopsy and the gastrointerologist called me yesterday and told me that I have barretts esophagus and that I'll have to take prevacid for the rest of my life. The doctor also said that barretts never goes away and I'll have to deal with it for the rest of my life.

Last night my husband and I did some research online about Barretts esophagus so we could know more about it.

I feel that the gastrointerologist really didn't give my very good answers regarding my questions that I had for him about the barretts. I feel that I should get a second opinion. My husband suggested that I should see a specialist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. I went on the mayo clinic website and I found 3 gastrointerologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester that specialize in Barretts Esophagus.

My question is should I seek a second opinion so I can get better answers and possibly find a treatment?
Last year when I started having acid reflux issues. I changed my diet and I started eating a low fat diet and eating more healthy. I also started keeping a food journal.

Barretts is a change in the lining of the esophagus and can be a pre cancerous condition. Did you ask the doctor about dysplasia? That is the main issue. If none is present then there are a couple of procedures to remove the Barretts cells. Each of these do have some risk. Or you can do regular checks to make sure it doesn't get any worse. Stay on the reflux medications. That is very important. I also have had reflux for about 5 years. Probably longer, but that is when I started the medication. Luckily no Barretts so far. But I'm on the meds forever too. if I were you I would get a 2nd opinion. If Mayo is an option for you then by all means.  (+ info)

Has anyone tried the herbal remedy Kudzu to cut down on alcohol consumption?

I have heard of a chinese remedy, a plant extract called Kudzu, it comes in tablet, or a drink.
It is meant to help cut down on drinking alcohol.
Has anyone tried this?, and did it work? anyside effects? and were to buy it? apparently Holland and Barrett sells it but it isnt strong enough.

OR PRACTICAL IDEAS TO NOT DRINK DURING THE WEEK. ANY GROUPS APART FROM AA.

Says in Wikipedia that Harvard Medical School are investigating the claims.

Maybe the powdered root which forms a sticky substance sticks to the sides of the digestive tract and prevents absorption?!

Where is the best place to buy Nutritional foods in the London area?

Supplements, seeds, oils etc. I know Holland & Barrett sell them, but they are rather expensive. I am truying to find a cheap trade store, or market. Ideally, these would be in the Central London area or somewhere around Wimbledon, Richmond, Kingston, Surbiton, Molesey, Walton, but not Hersham!

Any help would be greatly appreciated...
