I just curious about have a baby. I can't find a site that says anything about a mother having this problem but still wanting a baby. Help me!
----------

I found the first source below to have some encouraging information...it is a medical reference site...I suggest that you give it some attention. Although, certain precautions are indicated, it appears that you should be able to carry a baby to term.  (+ info)

Are you familiar with Tricuspid Atresia?

My 2 year old son has tricuspid atresia and I just wanted to know like how well is your child developing, what obstacles do you have to go through, and can he/she still play like other children.
My son has already had the first two surgery's and we have the last surgery this winter. He is doing well with his I just wanted to know is there anything else to look out for.
----------

Hi! I have a two year old son also with tricuspid atresia. He is getting ready to have a Fontan surgery in a couple of weeks that I am extremely anxious about.

So far his development has been great - he is happy and able to do everything a normal two year old does. He does get winded when walking up stairs and I know his exercise capacity is not perfect. When checked his oxygen saturations are usually around 84%. I hope the Fontan increases them.

For his future, right now I am so worried about his upcoming surgery. After that, I don't know what to expect for him and that is the hardest part. The doctors have said a Fontan circulation is his best chance for a near normal life, so that is all I can hope for. The other thing I hope for is the rapidly advancing cardiac research and development for more solutions for adults with these kinds of congenital heart defects.

Best of luck of for you and your little guy! When my son was born and in the hospital so much, it seems like many people were telling us they knew of older kids and teenagers with the same defects that were happy and that always gave us so much hope.  (+ info)

My gall bladder has biliary sludge. Will I need to have it removed?

About a month ago I had sharp abdominal pain, fever, chills, and headaches. Blood tests showed that by liver enzymes were high. My gall bladder scan showed that it only expunged 14 % of the radioactive isotope they injected in me. The ultrasound showed that my gall bladder has sludge.

Now my blood tests are normal. Most of my symptoms are gone, though I still feel discomfort. I am meeting with a surgeon next week, but wanted to get some opinions on weather or not I will need surgery.
----------

It's always better for you to make a laparoscopic ablation of the infected gallbladder!
You had already got the cholecystitis (infection of the gallbladder) last month. The cholecystitis can occur without gallstones (acalculous cholecystitis ), only with biliary sludge, that's your case!
For sure, in the next future the infection will recur because the infected gallbladder is not already removed!
The severe complication of acute cholecystitis is septicemia due to the necrosis of the gallbladder ( In this instance the bacteria will invade the blood stream). The mortality will be very high if the patient is not admitted in a well equipped and highly specialized intensive care unit.
Hope that may help you!
Good luck!  (+ info)

What is the role of fat in biliary diseases?

My son was born with a disease called Bilary Atresia. Atresia means "narrowing." Some are born with the ducts of the liver being too narrow or clogged. In my son's case he was born without bile ducts to get the bile out of his liver. When he was 13 days old, they performed a surgery that involved taking out the gall bladder and using part of the small intestine to make one large duct. We were told that this operation would only buy him time until he could grow and have a transplant by the time he was 2. He is 16 now and his liver is functioning normally without a transplant. There is a long story behind this miracle, but I digress.

I just wanted to let you know that for a long time he had to take "water-soluable" vitamins because they said that he would not be able to absorb the normal kind of vitamins. Those kind are called "fat-soluable." In other words, Fat travels throughout the body of a "normal" liver and vitamins attach to the fat so the body can absorb the vitamins. If a person has a bilary disease and the bile can't get out to break down waste, the person would become vitamin-deficiant. The water-soluable vitamins aborb into the body better in a person with a liver disease.

So, you see, a person with a diseased liver usually can't absorb vitamins because there isn't enough fat being produced to bond with them. I may not have all the facts exactly right, but I just know that my son's liver was very bad and the docs told us that his bilary problems meant that he couldn't absorb fats well and so couldn't absorb fat-soluable vitamins. Hope this wasn't too confusing. Believe me, we were much more than confused when this was all happening so fast.  (+ info)

Applying for disability for a chronic liver disease?

Is it possible for me to recieve disability for a chronic liver disease, biliary atresia? It makes my spleen not function as well as it should so I consistently get sick and weak feeling. On top of this, I am physically restrained because I cannot ger overly tired or damage my spleen due to falling, leaning, or pushing against it. Would this make me a candidate?
----------

Here is a link that may be of help to you.
According to this: if you have been diagnosed
with end stage liver disease and have
biliary atresia....you would be covered under
disability for 1 year and then be evaluated
again.
http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/105.00-Digestive-Childhood.htm

However, when a patient has multiple medical
conditions, they will take "all "of them into
account...so it is best to be sure that all are
listed. If the doctor has placed you under
any restriction for what you can or cannot do...
ask if he would write them down. Keep the
original, but give them a copy of it when you
send in your application. Having a doctor
state that you cannot work and placing that
in writing is a great plus to helping you get
disability benefits.

Hope this helps you. To go to the link provided,

2 yr old with pulmonary atresia ans vsd?

Has anyone had any experience with this with there own child, that would like to share some info. We know its a problem with his heart and we are going to bristol hospital soon, but i would love to gear from people with similar experiences. Thanks
----------

Pulmonary atresia is an extremely rare form of congenital heart disease in which the pulmonary valve does not form properly. The pulmonary valve is a flap-like opening on the right side of the heart that allows blood to move to the lungs.
In pulmonary atresia, a solid sheet of tissue forms where the valve opening should be. Because of this defect, blood from the right side of the heart cannot go to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
A ventricular septal defect is one or more openings in the interventricular septum, producing a shunt between ventricles. Large defects result in a significant left-to-right shunt and produce dyspnea with feeding and poor growth. A loud, harsh, holosystolic murmur at the lower left sternal border is common. Recurrent respiratory infections and heart failure may develop. Diagnosis is by echocardiography. Defects may close spontaneously during infancy or require surgical repair. Endocarditis prophylaxis is recommended.  (+ info)

Where can a baby less than a year old get a liver transplant operation for free or get sponsors for it?

My friend has a 7 month -old baby diagnosed with Biliary Atresia. She had a Kasai (liver bypass) done on her but it was unsuccessful. Pediatric liver transplants are not available here in the Philippines. The nearest hospitals where the procedure could be done are in Hongkong and Taiwan. It will cost her parents US$120,000. They can not afford it. She needs a transplant by June 2006. Are there charitable hospitals like the Mayo clinic which would be willing to take her in as a case? Or are there charitable institutions that would be willing to sponsor her surgery in HOngKOng or in Taiwan?

Does anyone have primary biliary cirrhosis?

My mom has it and I will be getting checked soon to see if I do as well. With my mom's, her itching is extremely severe. She is up most of the night itching and during the day she itches so much its hard to be in public because she is constantly scratching her skin open and bleeding. and sometimes she doesn't even know about the bleeding. Basically I am trying to see what other people do to control the itching, if anyone has found anything that helps??? Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions?
----------

Yes, I have primary biliary disease just like your mom. I did have end stage cirrhosis but received a transplant 3 years ago and am doing fine now.

I was one of the fortunate ones in that I did not itch, but I have talked to many others that do. I know it can almost drive a person crazy sometimes. Your mom has probably tried just about everything to stop it without success. I know this will sound silly, but I have heard a number of people say that rubbing lard on you can help. I'm talking about the white Crisco lard that comes in a can for cooking. Some people say it works when nothing else would work. Even though it may be silly, it won't hurt to try it other than making your mom quite oily and slippery.

Someone suggested Ursodiol which is a med your mom might already take. It does not stop itching. It is a med used by people with biliary disease since it thins out the bile which can help with bile flow problems. I still take it even after my transplant since I have a small bile duct blockage. It works great at keeping my liver function numbers normal. Without it, they will elevate quite a lot. It has a lot of benefits, but stopping that itch is not one of them.

You might want to ask this question at liver groups on the internet since they are usually going through the same stuff as your mom. They might be able to help you more and give some better suggestions. Dephi Forums has a good group that always helped me a lot with anything relating to my liver problems. I really hope she finds something to help her ASAP since I'm sure she is quite miserable with this terrible itching.  (+ info)

Are physicals required for job positions?

I recently interviewed for a medical billing job for a sleep clinic. To my surprise, they want to hire me. Now, before my employment, they want me to take a physical, blood test, and urine test for drugs. The blood/urine test is fine. I understand. But why the physical? Also, I have a rare liver disorder called biliary atresia that makes me sick but doesn't effect my work. Do you think this will keep me from getting the job?
----------

it should not. they usually look for back injuries and things like a hernia. good luck  (+ info)
