How old must one be to be elligible for bone marrow donation?

Someone i know is in need of a bone marrow transplant due to a type of anemia. I was wondering, am i, as a 16-year-old healthy male, elligible to donate the marrow if our tissue type matches? thanks for any answers.

Minors can only donate to related patients. So unfortunatly you cannot donate to your friend. However, when you are 18, you can sign up for the registry

What is the percentage of bone marrow that is collected during a bone marrow biopsy?

What is the percentage of bone marrow that is collected from the pelvic bone region during a bone marrow biopsy?
I've already had a bone marrow biopsy done, and I am interested in becoming a bone marrow donor, as I already know what to expect -- in terms of discomfort, etc. From what I've read, 5% of bone marrow is taken from the pelvic bone region during bone marrow donations, this is why I am curious as to how much is taken during a bone marrow biopsy (is it more or less than 5%).
----------

It is about the same amount that is collected.  (+ info)

How long is treatment before bone marrow transplant?

my friend was just diagnosed with Leukemia and so will have to go through chemotherapy until she is ready for bone marrow transplant. But how long does this treatment generally last?
----------

If she's just being conditioned immediately before the transplant, and not undergoing a course (or several courses) of chemo before considering transplantation, anywhere from 2-10 days depending on the type of drugs used, her type of cancer, and her physical condition.  (+ info)

How long should the pain last after a bone marrow biopsy?

My husband had a bone marrow biopsy done and it was VERY painul. It has been three days and he is still very sore. Is this normal? He can't even sleep through the night.
----------

it is possible for it to be painful for this long. I can suggest a few things, tylenol/acetamenophin and or ibuprofen if these have not been tried and if the doctor allows. Another thing that I commonly recommend is to use orajel as long as the wound is not getting infected. do see your doctor if it persists or worsens or if new symptoms develope, it may take upto 2-3 weeks total for it to completely go away, good luck  (+ info)

How old do you have to be to sell bone marrow/blood?

I am healthy and athletic; I also eat right but short on money. How old do you have to be to sell bone marrow and or blood? How much could I possibly make?
----------

Blood and bone marrow are free, voluntary donations. You can't sell it.

You can sell plasma though. Basically, it's part of your blood. It takes about 2 hours per donation. When they take your blood, they cycle it through a machine to take the plasma, and the rest goes back into your body. It helps people who cannot form blood clots on their own and is life-saving. I think it's about $20-30 bucks per visit.

I'm sure you could google "plasma center" or something similar to find a place near you. You can go up to twice a week I think. I don't know how old you have to be, but I'm guessing it's the same as blood donation. And you probably have to be a certain minimum weight, just like blood donation.  (+ info)

What is the life expectancy if a person found out to have a cancer of the bone marrow or plasma cells?

If at the age 45years old and a person had these type of cancer of the plasma, which are formed in the bone marrow, so what is the life expectancy in months or in years according statistics will the patiant still live longer than 20yrs? Is it one of the deadliest cancer? Do we really have a new medicine for these? How much does it cost or can we have for free? Out of 10,000 patients how many have this type of cancer? Thank you so much. GOD BLESS YOU.

Well It is with great pleasure that in September of this year I will celebrate my 19th year cured from acute biphenotypic leukemia, meaning i had both acute myelogenous and acute lymphocytic leukemias combined. This was all due to an unrelated bone marrow transplant. In 1990 when I had my transplant my chances of survivng were less than 7 percent. I know things have improved enormously since then but I dont believe that medicine alone can determine ones chances of survivng. One really must believe that the possibilty of surviving exists and keep focused. I know there were people in the hospital at the same time as I was who had alot greater "chances" than I did that didnt survive because the thought of cancer was almost like a death sentence to them. As far as the cost of such, my medical expenses went over the $1 million mark the first year I was sick, I was insured by my job at the time so my medical coverage was the least of my problems. Had I not had insurance I would have never been a candidate for the bone marrow transplnt. Best of luck to you, God Bless. Anjanette  (+ info)

How and where do I go to get my bone marrow tested?

I live in the panhandle of Florida and I want to get my bone marrow tested. who do I ask? Where do I go? Please give me all the information you know even if you think it will not matter.
I want to be a donor.
----------

Are you wanting to be tested for a disease, or as a donor?

If you need to be tested for a disease like leukemia, go to your doctor and explain whats wrong. If you have a history of a bone marrow disease, call your doctor.

If you are looking to be tested as a donor.... You can either sign up for the registry, or you can have it done privatly. Unless you are a sibling, child, or parent of the patient, the person's insurance will not pay to have you tested. If you sign up for the registry, you will be searchable by docs world wide, but you can remove yourself from the list anytime you want, as well as decline to donate when called. If you are going to be tested privatly, you need to coordinate with the patient's doctor to find out when and where. You may desire a different doctor to do the testing, thats fine, just ask and they will refer you to someone else, and your results will not be released without your direct permission.  (+ info)

Can you donate bone marrow if you have rheumatoid arthritis?

I have rheumatoid arthritis but do not take any medicine for it(I'm personally against putting un-natural things in my body). I would like to sign up for bone marrow donation to help anyone whom I may be a match for. Can a person with RA still donate bone marrow?

Thanks!
----------

You will need to procede carefully since RA is an immune system disease. There may be risks to you as a donor as well as to the recipient.

According to the Puget Sound Blood Center, Osteoarthritis is okay. Forget it if you have other types.  (+ info)

Why is a bone marrow transplant is sometimes used as a treatment for Leukemia?

Leukemia is a disease in which white blookd cells grow in an uncontrolled matter. Why is a bone marrow transplant is sometimes used as a treatment for this disease?
----------

GREAT QUESTION

heres why:
because in a bone marrow transplant they first completely remove the persons bone marrow (the red bone marrow, not yellow) which is where the leukocytes (white blood cells) grow. Then they implant the new bone marrow that is healthy and not diseased that way healthy cells will grow.

does that help?:  (+ info)
