What causes brain pressure when you have a concussion?

When a person gets hit in the head and sustains a concussion. Lets say they are knocked out for 5-10 minutes. What might cause the brain to swell and cause pressure? is it always accompanied by bleeding on the brain? what operation will be needed to relieve this pressure and what would be the recovery from surgery to relieve pressure on the brain?
----------

Any time a person is unconscious after a blow to the head, they NEED to see a doctor - head trauma can be fatal, even if it appears minor.

When the skull is struck, the force of the blow moves the skull violently in the direction of the force. The brain, however, is much slower to move, so the inside of the skull smacks into the brain and propels it forward in the same direction as the force. Then the head stops moving, and may even move backwards, but the brain does not stop until it again strikes the inside of the skull on the side opposite the blow.

So the brain can be injured in two places - at the site of the blow and on the opposite side to the blow.

The brain can respond like any other tissue that is damaged, by swelling. If increased intra-cranial pressure occurs, there are a couple of options depending on the cause of the increased pressure - drilling one or more small holes in the skull to allow extra fluid to drain out, or, much more serious, cutting away part of the skull to allow the brain to swell without the confinement of the hard skull - that in itself can be fatal. It may be possible to replace the same piece of bone back into place in the skull, or the space may be filled with a metal plate - depends on lots of factors.

There are various drugs that can be given that may help to prevent, reduce or shorten the time when there is increased pressure, but they do not always work.

Brain bleeding does not necessarily come along with a concussion.  (+ info)

Has anyone had a concussion or other brain injury that caused them to have neck pain with it?

I was in a car accident last June and have been dealing with major neck pain near my scull. Doctors are doing tests now to rule out any brain injuries. Has anyone had a concussion or other brain injury that caused them to have neck pain with it?

I think you'll find a chiropractor more helpful. I was T-boned by some guys who were flying high. I was turning left and they hit me broadside pushing my vehicle about 50' or more. I had my head turned right because I was watching them come at me. This caused a worse injury. Ironically, the chiropractor I went to was located on the corner of the intersection and they saw the whole thing. Five people stopped and offered to be witnesses. It must have been bad to see. Any way, that was my first experience with chiropractor and I am glad I did. Let the medical folks do their thing and them check out a Palmer method chiropractor. The guy I went to did massage and acupuncture too. I hope you went to the hospital and had then check you out at the time and that insurance is paying for your bills. Hopefully not your company; the other guys. Good luck.  (+ info)

Is it possible that my brain is bleeding from a concussion?

i suffered a concussion 3 weeks ago and played with it for a week. i may have aggravated it again a week after. i am currently not practicing but my headaches are getting worse and not going away. the headaches dont feel like tradtitional headaches and are right in the back of my head and sometimes around my left eye. there is alot of pressure and it just feels uncomfortable.
why arent my headaches going away?
----------

A concussion isn't like a regular injury. It takes a long time to become 100% again. If you haven't gotten it checked out by a doctor yet, go get it checked.

As far as bleeding in your brain goes, if the injury happened 3 weeks ago and it was bad enough to cause intracranial bleeding, you'd probably be dead by now.  (+ info)

Can my employer terminate me because of changes in brain function following a concussion?

I was in a car accident a few months ago and was out of work until recently. Now that I have returned I have difficulty with organization as well as general social skills. I just had a meeting with my supervisor where he basically told me that I am walking a thin line in terms of keeping my job. Is it legal for them to do this to me?
----------

I have no idea what country you are in. So there is no way of telling. I understand the problem with organization and social skills because I lost them after my accident too. However my fights continually became with the long term disability carrier rather than the company. I was fired via email because I could not return to work and they knew that I could not handle any noises including the sound of the phone ringing. None of the medical professionals knew when I could return to work at that point and I was supposed to be directing the majority of the admin for a huge company. Wasn't a great way to get fired, but I worked in a state that was a right to work state and I know they needed to replace me. I have never been able to return to work.

Just because you have been cleared to return to work by the dr. doesn't mean that you won't find problems cropping up that you wouldn't realize you would have a problem with.

If your insurance covers it you can also get a neuropsychological report. It will map out what skills you have lost and explain to other drs etc. what your functional level is.

Are you covered by short-term or long-term disability insurance. If so, find out if they will cover vocational rehabilitation so that you can be trained to do something that you are better suited to do now.

If you are not able to do your job and a reasonable accommodation would not help you do your job any better then they really do have the right to say we need someone who can perform the job you were hired to do (speaking of USA.) However, you can always ask if they have a different kind of job that you can do that doesn't require you to have a lot of people interaction or organizational skills.

Good luck to you.  (+ info)

Do I have a concussion of the brain?

I fell down the stairs yesterday, not far, but kind of hard and today I feel weird. Tired, kind of sick and cant concenrate. Is it a concussion of the brain or is it just that my deadline is coming up and I dont want to study? Which one is more likely?
----------

You've omitted the most important piece of information -- did you hit your head?

A grade 3 concussion, one with a loss of consciousness, requires immediate medical care. You didn't mention this and I would hope you would if it had happened. A mild concussion almost never leads to hemorraghic strokes (brian attacks) or anything serious or permanent. Just saying that someone had a fall and 2 months later had a stroke doesn't prove cause & effect. I don't know which type of brain attack this person had or the cause of it. In fact, the fall may have been due to a condition that also led up to the brain attack.

Some of the symptoms of a concussion are: Seeing stars" and feeling dazed, dizzy, or lightheaded; Memory loss, such as trouble remembering things that happened right before and after the injury; Nausea or vomiting; Headaches; Blurred vision and sensitivity to light; Slurred speech or saying things that don't make sense; Difficulty concentrating, thinking, or making decisions; Difficulty with coordination or balance; Feeling anxious or irritable for no apparent reason; or feeling overly tired.

Of course it's entirely possible that you feel tired, kind of sick and can't concentrate because you have some sort of deadline coming up. It's also possible that you had a mild concussion but without a physical and neurological exam...well. Take it easy for the next few days. If your symptoms persist or worsen, see a doctor right away. And you can see a doctor at any time you wish.  (+ info)
