Whats the difference between chronic bronchitis and emphysema?

I am doing an essay on the Lungs and bronchitis and I came across a website that says " Chronic Obstructive Pulmanory Disease" Refers to 2 lung diseases Chronic Bronchitis and emphysema which is obstruction to the airflow. I know about bronchitis, but I was wondering if there is a difference between the two. thanks
thanks for the info everyone, im having a look at the pdf now. it looks really good by the way cheers

Perhaps Bronchitis can be cured? I should think so. Anything with 'itis' at the end means an inflammation of, i think. Emphysema is, eventually, fatal.  (+ info)

What is the difference between Asthma and Chronic Bronchitis?

They recently diagnosed me with Asthma and have me on two types of inhalers.
I really think it's Chronic Bronchitis.

What symptoms distinguish these two ailments from each other?
I'm 42 and lived with a smoker for 25 years.
----------

Chronic bronchitis is usually found only in heavy smokers. Asthma usually presents itself at a very young age while the other one presents in the 50+ age group. Chronic bronchitis is also associated with a lot of sputum production when compared to asthma. Asthma can also be due to some medication, food, pollen or dust to which you are allergic to.  (+ info)

How can you tell if your bronchitis is acute or chronic?

It all started when my throat was scratchy on Friday, like a usual cold was coming on. I woke up that night with a rattling noise in my chest when I would breathe and I took a puff of my albuterol inhaler. Yesterday I went to a doctor who said I have bronchitis and he prescribed Zithromax. My chest is all blocked up with mucus but hardly any comes up when I cough. It has been causing asthma attacks ever since Friday night. I don't smoke but my brother does. I was wondering what the difference between chronic bronchitis and acute bronchitis was. I know chronic bronchitis is when the condition doesn't get better but I want to know if there is any way to tell if it is going to go away at this stage. Thanks.
----------

First of all, make sure that you're not around people that smoke, this will only tend to exacerbate any symptoms that you have. Also that your inhaler contains medicine and that what you're taking isn't just propellant, if you're not getting any medication through it you won't be doing yourself any good. Make sure that you warm it (under your arm) and shake it really well, dispense a couple of puffs into the air to fill the chamber with medicine and then take a couple of puffs-placing the inhaler 1/2 inch outside of the lips to minimize spraying at the back of your throat.
Chronic bronchitis is a daily productive cough that occurs for 3 months or longer and I do not think that this is what you have. However, you are at a very high risk for developing pneumonia. Be sure that you're drinking lots of fluids (this will help to thin the mucus in your chest) and take long, slow deep breaths followed by a deep cough at least 10 times in a row. This builds up pressure behind the mucus blocking your tiny lower airways and removes the blockages.
If this isn't any better by Wednesday, go back to the doctor...treatment isn't working and you need to get him to reanalyze your medications.
Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.  (+ info)

What are some treatments of Chronic Bronchitis? How is it determined that you have it?

I am going to a lung specialist Thursday. I am on my third round of bronchitis this year. I am just wondering what kind of test to expect, and what possible treatments there are if I am diagnosed with Chronic bronchitis.
----------

Chronic bronchitis is characterized by permanent scar tissue in your bronchioles, causing a productive cough for more than two years continuously. I hope you haven't had it for this long!!! From three episodes of bronchitis in one year, you'd have recurrent acute bronchitis...

I'm not trying to pick over your vocabulary, I was just concerned you may google 'chronic bronchitis' and end up scared! Chronic bronchitis is an end-stage respiratory disease, never gets better, and requires lots of medicine and oxygen. It often accompanies emphysema, which together are known as COPD...

My guess would be the lung specialist will give you stronger antibiotics and see if you possibly have asthma, but that will be totally up to what he/she finds. Best of wishes, and I hope you feel better soon!  (+ info)

How can someone who has severe chronic bronchitis and coughs constantly continue smoking cigarettes?

I do not understand. This guy coughs and clears his throat every single blessed waking minute. He is my temporary flatmate or roommate as some may call them.

if you suffer from chronic bronchitis and cough plus clear your throat ever waking minute of your day, then why in the world do people like that smoke yet?

Can anyone help me understand?

Therein lies the insanity of any addiction. You keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. There is no rhyme or reason to it my friend.
God bless you for being concerned about your friend.  (+ info)

How long do you live with chronic bronchitis?

you see, I am 15 and my best friend is 15. We have been best friends since kindergarden and we never did anything bad. The other day my best friend got chronic bronchitis and liquid is also starting to fill his lungs... can he live, if so for how long?
----------

Chronic bronchitis just means a reoccurring inflammation of the air tubes that enter your lungs, supplying the air you breathe. It could be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants like cigarette smoke. It is treatable with oral medications and inhalers. The outcome is very good when treated, I really think he'll be fine if he does what the doctor tells him to do.  (+ info)

ExplainWhy do people with chronic bronchitis have a higher than normal rate of respiratory infections?

Why do people with chronic bronchitis have a higher than normal rate of respiratory infections. Explain what the primary cause is and what is happening at the cellular level
----------

On of the effects of the chronic bronchitis is , it sluggishes the function of muco-ciliary function of the respiratory tract hence it can not effectively clear the foreign particles and so on. It is one of the reasons why they are vulnerable to other respiratory infections.
The second reason is due to increased sputum production which gives the suitable medium for any microbe to thrive which eventually can raise an infection.  (+ info)

Is it possible for chronic bronchitis to turn into lung cancer?

What are the chances of getting lung cancer before the age of 20?
Can you get it after smoking 2, 4 or 6 years?
And back to my original question, can chronic bronchitis turn into lung cancer?
----------

No chronic bronchitis does not lead to lung cancer however it does lead to pneumonia and once one has had pneumonia they tend to be suceptible to getting it again and again. You can get lung cancer at any age and it doesn't always come with smoking, although smoking is a major cause of lung cancer. I've known people who smoked for most of their lives and die of natural causes without ever having lung cancer, I've also known people who never smoked who have succumbed to lung cancer.
Contrary to myth chronic bronchitis does not only happen in the elderly, it can and does happen in younger people as well who probably had their first bout of it as small children. Those with asthma are also prone to chronic bronchitis.
Once one learns the early signs of bronchitis they can do things that will help prevent it from progressing and causing one to miss school or work because of the illness, flu shots help as does being physically fit to begin with, getting enough rest etc.  (+ info)

Does anyone know any remedies for Chronic Bronchitis?

It happens every year, my mom gets a cough that last for a month or so. Really it's diagnosed as chronic bronchitis. She's been to her doctor several times and has taken prescription and over-the-counter medications. Unfortunately, nothing seems to ease her constant coughing. The only prescription medication that really did help was Histinex, but is not on the market anymore.Does anyone have or know someone that does have what my mom has? If so what do they take or do to relieve this constant coughing or bronchitis.
----------

Hi Mario

Chronic bronchitis is not necessarily caused by infection and is most often part of more serious lung conditions. It is generally part of a syndrome called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The most common chronic bronchitis symptoms are characterized by a persistent cough that produces phlegm for at least three months a year for two consecutive years. Chronic bronchitis can also be more severe.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies have been used for centuries to treat a number of conditions, and so it is not surprising to find that natural cures or supplements to alleviate bronchitis symptoms have been supplied by nature. Herbs such as Althea Officinalis (Marshmallow), Hyssopus Officinalis (Hyssop), and Sambucus Nigra (Elder) have long been used for their soothing effect on inflamed and irritated mucous membranes, while promoting respiratory health and vitality.

There are also a few tissue salts known for their tonic effect on the overall respiratory system such as Bryonia (30C) and Kali. Mur. (6C.) While these ingredients help relieve troubling bronchitis symptoms, other remedies are especially helpful in assisting with speedy recovery and boosting the immune system to help your body fight off infection.

Herbs such as Echinacea purpurea, Astragalus membranaceous, Inula helenium and Withania somnifera are commonly used for their antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, as well as their ability to support the immune system. These herbs work as a tonic for the immune system and are often recommended to prevent and assist recovery from illness or infection, including bronchitis.
