How many children die from burns in the kitchen each year?

I was wondering how many children aged 0-4 die each year from burns in the kitchen alone? Also, how many are hospitalized and how many have permanent injuries? My husband and I are in a friendly argument and can't find a decent answer on the web.

this site should give you everything you need:
http://www.burnsurvivor.com/burn_statistics.html

im pretty sure that kitchen deaths are pretty rare and permanent injuries are much more common. my friend has third degree burns all over his back, neck, and arms from when his mom accidently knocked into a pot of boiling water on the stove and it fell on him.  (+ info)

Why are burns that cover much of the body such serious medical problems?

Why are burns that cover much of the body such serious medical problems? What are the skin functions that are interrupted by burns?
----------

Your skin is your first line of defense against infection. Large scale burns take this protection away. Many people who have been terribly burned die weeks afterwards from infection. Bad burns also cause a "fluid shift", and imbalance of electrolytes in the body. Most people who die quickly after a burn die from this. Third, any kin d of burn near the face may affect the airway, and the airway can swell, making the person unable to b reathe without advanced life support.   (+ info)

What type of underwear can i wear to stop me from getting rub burns between my legs when i workout?

when i run on the track i get rub burns between my legs from my underwear. what's the best type of underwear to wear while your running?
----------

I don't wear any...

You can try to wear biking shorts - that way the shorts rub together instead of skin on skin... Also try putting vaseline or body glide on your skin - that will provide a protective barrier.

Way to go! Keep up the good work...  (+ info)

How do I get rid of red burns around the hairline from a regular perm?

I am a 19 year old male. My hair is very very thick and coarse, yesterday my cousin put a Isoplus regular/normal strength relaxer/perm in my hair. When she was done I had felt my hairline burning, and it was red. She said put some vasoline around it, and the whole night I could barely sleep, my hairline was burning I had vasoline/petroleum jelly on it. This morning it helped some of the redness, but the sides of my hair have dried up to my scalp, and it's very scaly, and hard like. How di I get my hair unstuck from my scalp and unhardened it, and how can I get rid of the red burns and skin irritation around my hirline? and how long will it take for oit to go away? btw, this was my first and last perm never again will I get another one, it straightened my hair pretty well, but I got burns and hard hair from it!

Been there....

You can loosen the stuck hair by washing it gently. As for the burns, they'll have to heal naturally. You can help it along though by using Neosporin cream on it. They have a formula that should reduce the pain too and you can get it at most drugstores.

Now, the relaxer was probably too strong for your hair type which is what happened to me. I'm using a sensitive scalp formula now (Mizani) and don't have a problem anymore.

Also, when you do get a relaxer, make sure you don't wash your hair for at least 3 days BEFORE you do it it will definitely burn. If you don't normally use product on your hair, you may want to wait 4 or 5 days. Also make sure you don't scratch your scalp for a few days before getting the relaxer. When the relaxer is on your head, the second you feel any kind of burning, start to wash it out because it's only going to get worse the longer you wait and that burning sensation means skin damage.

The vaseline around the hairline is pretty much a standard industry practice. My stylist takes a rope of cotton and presses it into the vaseline along my hairline as a measure of added protection.

Finally, unless the person doing your hair is a professional stylist, you should never let them relax your hair. Non professionals can't assess your hair because most of them only do their own hair and will do what works on THEM for you and that may not be the best thing.  (+ info)

How do I remove burns from the bottom of my cooking pot?

I was cooking with sugar and sugar burns easily and there are burn markings at the bottom of the pot. How do I get it off?
----------

I make homemade jam, which takes lots of sugar. In the beginning, I too burned sugar to the pot.
To remove the burned sugar, I have used Comet cleanser
( the green powder kind ) and soaked with warm water.
Then use a soapy S.O.S. pad. Scrub hard.
Scrape as much as you can with a flat knife, soak and scrub again and again until it is gone.

All cooks burn something to the bottom of the pan.  (+ info)

What is the best way you know how to use tea tree oil on skin burns?

I purchase my tea tree oil from a great company that uses it in many of their products therefore they are environmentally friendly. Have you used tea tree oil on skin burns? How often did you apply it? Did you use it with anything else? Thanks!
Just a bad burn from the rack reaching my arm in the stove. I'm pretty sure it's not 2nd degree though, it just hurts unless i keep the oil and gel on it. It eased the pain but I've put it on about 4 times today.
----------

Are you talking about melaluca? They make a triple antibiotic cream that works well on burns. The problem with burns is the skin is destroyed on the top layers of the body. That exposes you to unwanted bacteria. Then you can get an infection that causes swelling. Another remedy for burns is make a poltice of charcoal. It naturally removes the bacteria allowing the skin to heal quickly.  (+ info)

How do you relive the pain of burns?

I burnt four fingers of my right hand while pouring boiling water in my tea cup. Hours later and hours of putting it in cold water and on ice and it still burns. Do you know any way to cause the pain to go with things you usually have at home? Because my burnt ointment finished. Your advice would really be helpful.
Well its light burn...i guess first degree...i man i didn't spill alot..but enough for it to burn and turn red
----------

How bad is the burn? If it's first or second degree, then try some aloe. That usually helps my hand when I slam it into a hot oven rack.  (+ info)

Is there a way to calculate how many calories one burns on an average day?

Hi there,

I am trying to loose some weight and I was wondering if there is any way to calculate how many calories a person burns on an average day, without any excercise, just walking to work, sitting behind desk, breathing, talking, etc. Just your regular inactive day.
Does anybody know how to measure this?
Thank you!
----------

The general rule of thumb, this is an average, and unfortunately I don't have a site that I can point this to, so take it for what is it is worth. To calculate how many calories you burn a day while at rest multiply your weight by 11, men by 12, yes I know it isn't fair, and that is how many calories your burn at rest. This obviously changes as your body composition changes, more lean muscle burns more calories, higher metabolism, but for the purposes of simple math we will stick with the average. Based on that, a 150 lbs woman burns 1650 calories sitting around doing nothing.

If your interested in getting very specific about exactly how much your personally burning in everyday, there is a product called the body bugg by Apex fitness. I have never used this product, but I have used similar, and much less expensive, products and not as advanced, but you wear it all day and it can apparently tell exactly how many calories you are burning. It is quite expensive, cost is about 400 bucks for the device and 3 months to their web based program that tracks everything.

Good Luck  (+ info)
